Years of watching and I’m still always inspired and impressed by Nick. Joined military while juggling KZfaq, opening up a gym, creating products, helping others and also acknowledging his fans and people who look up to him. Even when things don’t go as expected he never gets discouraged and always works on improving himself in every aspect of life. When he sets his mind to something he always gets it done.

Going to love this series Nick. I Quit powerlifting about 4 years ago and cold turkey started training for a half ironman. The hardest part was how much strength I was losing, But getting over that and focusing on new goals is what the process is all about.

DUDE!!! I just did my first one a couple weeks ago in Santa Rosa. Such an amazing sense of accomplishment pushing past all the walls you're going to experience during the race. Biggest take away is you're going to get a lot of negative push back from those who hear you're doing one. They wont understand why and say that its crazy. Keep pushing and you will train enough even though you feel you could always be doing more! Cant wait to see the video of you crossing that finish line. Good luck!

As an iron man veteran my advice: lose wait if possible, cut down. Hit the.bike and the pool asap. Running clearly isn't the biggest problem for you so focus maximum effort on the pool. And a lot on the bike as it is about 6-8 hours long for some people.

I honestly think he knows what he does, when he never really biked before, he should get comfortable before. You are significantly more likely to injure yourself with clip on pedals
@unashamedly1776
@unashamedly1776 5 жыл бұрын
@@daskanguru140 If he's never really biked before, how does he "know what he does?" I've been biking for a long time and initially switching from mountain biking to road biking (with clipless pedals) was nerve-wracking; but after riding for a couple of days and practicing clipping in and out you realize its mainly just mental. The OP wasn't being rude, just passing along knowledge
@daskanguru140
@daskanguru140 5 жыл бұрын
@@unashamedly1776 I think he does. I had the same experience than you when I finally got some clipless pedals on my road bike, but I was comfortable with it after like 100k and never really crashed. The big difference is that I've cycled thousands and thousands of kilometres before I got them and therefore already got a pretty solid bike technique. If you came from mountain biking, yours was probably even much better than mine; in that case it is no miracle that you ajust to it super fast. But if he never really cycled like he stated, he doesn't have that background like both of us had and he probably doesn't have that basic experience and bike control either. In that case, it is best to get comfortable with riding those small tires first before switching, and I think he knows that. That's what I meant with "he knows what he does" :)

Nice to see people coming from like pure fitness stuff to triathlon. But one thing I noticed is that it might be hard training like a "body builder" with the focus on max power and training for an ironman which is all about endurance. The Problemen I see here is that for a short period of max power there are muscles "strings" (I dont really know how to say it in english cause Im from german :D) of type 2. They use a ton of carbs and as soon as you get into the anaerobic zone the will be a lot of laktat (the biggest enemy of a triathlete :D) created by the high useage of carbs. So we triathletes try to have as many of muscle string type 1, which is a lot slower but you can train it that its using more fat than carbs.

Train hard and smart. I did one many years ago just to see if I could finish it--I did, but it kicked my ass. Strangely enough, it was the biking that was my weakest link. I was a distance runner in high school and a strong distance swimmer; and being a Special Ops Ranger gave me the confidence that I had the mental fortitude to finish the race. I trained crazy on running and swimming and took the cycling for granted--a sort of "you never forget how to ride a bike." Wrong approach. I had no clue on the technical aspects of distance cycling. Don't make that mistake--train for all three and make sure you know how to make the bike an extension of you. You might also want to consider leaning down--there's a reason you don't see many buff dudes competing in an Ironman. Good luck!

Nick, check out this coach. His name is Drew Edsall, based out of Colorado. He's an amazing endurance coach. He brought me back to back cross country mtb wins in 2015, including the first ever Caribbean Championships. Obtained a 100% win rate across 13 races. That guy knows his stuff I highly recommend him. He trained me hands on at altitude in colorado, where I raced and took 4th after what would be the world champ of 2016, and national champs scattered across the u.s. (12,000) feet above sea level. Keep being a beast brother.

Did an Olympic Triathlon last year.. a couple tips I learned: 1. Make sure you get those electrolytes and gel packs in your during training/race.. dont want to cramp! 2. Bike hills, if the race your doing has hills you need to train them.. works completely different muscles and you'll struggle for the rest of the race and then effect your run time if you dont prep right. 3. Since you have a strong upper body use mostly arms for swim, dont kick as much and save your legs for bike/run. Goodluck!!

Barton Springs is such a good place to practice open water swimming. Good think you live near Austin. Can't wait for you to smash it

Nick, I trained for my first Tri this year, it was just a sprint. The swimming was new but cycling was not. Here are a few things I think might help you. 1. Cycling shorts- Get the bibs, so much better. Don't skimp on price, I like the Louis Garneau Carbon 2 bibs. I'm sure other brands are fine, but don't try and get the $80 shorts, you probably wont like them. I used his Tri shorts and liked them. 2. On the bike you will probably need to get fitted a few times. The first will get you close, but you will want to refine it. I have/had issue with shoes and my feet hurting. I dont have much advice for you on that, but I will say I prefer SPD-SL over the smaller spd. 3. It may sound silly but think about how to pedal. It is possible to use more hamstring and hip flexor than quad. I really had to take time and think about the stroke and make sure I was using my quads. 4. Weight training. You are a little younger than me so this might not apply as much, but i'm only 37. I had to give up weight training for the most part. I just couldn't recover enough with weights. I was way too tired to really get a good swim/bike/run in. Now that I've finished the Tri i'm back lifting, thank goodness. And yes, i do use your supplements. 5. The swim. I don't have any good pointers on this one. Mine was only 300 yards and I really didn't want any more than that. My wife can swim all day long and not get tired, i'm done after 150 yards. She beat me in the Tri we did, by 2 minutes. 6. Bike wheels. I didnt believe it but they make a very big difference. Try and borrow a nice set for the race, they really do help. I just got my first set of carbon 50mm, very fast. Sorry for the long post. I'm sure its not all new to you, but I wanted to throw my two cents in. Good luck.

Nick I have done 3 Full and 10 Half Ironmans. Get a good training program, figure out your nutrition ( Which was the hardest to figure out for me) , Do brick work outs. Completing an Ironman is an awesome feeling. You are a RANGER so you already have the right mind set. Train smart hard charger and have fun.👍
