I bought a 2017 ram over ford and chevy for a few reasons, but the biggest was bang for the buck. Go compare features between the ram and ford and you'll see how much ford nickles and dimes you for options. I got a fully loaded ram for a great price, much cheaper than Ford, and it does what I need perfectly, i couldnt be happier. You can look at towing numbers all day, but in the end, if it fits your needs and saves you 10k then its an easy choice.

omni875 enjoy your new rig. I'm looking to get into a new 3/4 ton next year , but it won't be a ram that's for sure. Not saying I don't like the truck or the motor, it's just not worth it in the long run for me. I trade my trucks in about every 5 years, so that alone will keep me from buying one. Ram has the worst resale of any truck on the road, and it makes sense to. Any dealer that can sell there fully loaded trucks at 10-15k off any day off the week, is a cheap truck to begin with. So it's no wonder there's not much resale value. However, it is really tempting to get a truck that much cheaper. Hope your rig treats ya well. Cheers

Ram Does have a lower re-sale but in the 3/4 -1 ton segment they are all about the same. Look at early 2000 model trucks. Assuming around the same mileage and overall condition of the vehicle a 2002 truck (Dodge, Chevy or Ford) will all sell for around the same price. The Dodge might even sell for a little more considering it is a highly popular sought after engine(cummins). Bottom line is if you can get a similar spec'd truck in a Ram for 10k less you are better off. I promise you 10 years from now any of the big three brands are going to sell within ($1000) of each other.

Randy Cupp I don't no, I still have some time before i buy, won't start shopping until next spring. But by then the new Rams will be out and I'm not sure if I like the new look or not. I'll have to wait and see it in person. I'd have no problem buying a GM if it wasn't for where there DEF tank is located. It's a terrible spot. I do love my Fords tho, but there all so closely matched now it's really have to choose. And they all work great and could be a perfect truck , and you could get a lemon from any of them too.

I couldn't have said it better! I wish we could combine things from all of the manufacturers to make a "perfect truck". Not sure if I am crazy about the look of the new Ram either, but they usually grow on me. I would be surprised if a 3/4 or 1 ton is available in the new body style for the first year since it is somewhat traditional for ram to release them for the second year of the new body style run.

+Matt S I Run Ford Superduty's and Ram trucks on my Ranch. when it comes to resale Ram has treated me very well. Honestly its been a tuff buy to trade a Superduty in for a new Superduty. The worst was trying to trade off a 05 F350 powerstroke. Had the typical 6.0 problems but everything worked and the truck was clean. Wanted to get another Ram but several dealers wouldn't even trade it in because of the know engine problems. Ended up getting a 11 SD with the 6.7 powerstroke. darn good truck overall. Traded that off on a 17 SD but again resale on the Ford wasn't great. Only reason I went with Ford is because it's a new designed truck. So it was something different. My favorite truck is definitely Ram.

@michaelking1869
@michaelking1869 6 жыл бұрын
First thing I would like to say is thank you for tests worth watching. There are a few things that come into play here and one of the most important is the power level. In the diesel world having a lower power setup leads to better fuel mileage. This is why big boy fleet trucks will have 9L-12L engines only making a tiny 350-450HP or so and the higher power engines are just accepted as going to use more fuel. Over the road (Semi trucks) use inline 6 engines because of space, cost to build, and simplicity. It's super simple when exhaust goes out one side of the engine and air comes in the other side. There are other reasons as well, but not worth going into. Either way it looks like Cummins has chased fuel mileage more than Ford where Ford has chased power. For the minor difference I would take the power.

I just traded my 2016 F250 due to the exhaust system going out and got the Ram 2500. They are having the same issues VW did with their diesel engines.

By the way the introduction was made, I assume these tests were not conducted on the same day. Wind and temperature can play a HUGE role in MPG. I understand it's impossible to drive every 100 mile loop in every truck on the market in one day in the same weather conditions, but it's also impossible to claim that this test has any validity as well.

The cummins is hands down the most dependable, efficient, and powerful. There were multiple runs done on a dyno with all three manufacturers and the cummins was the only one that was close to what the manufacturer suggested horsepower and torque. The duramax with the hood scoop and all was the worse of the three. These trucks are not ment for groceries, they like to be worked. Cummins all the way.

Both very nice trucks. That being said it would be hard not to go with the Ford being less than 1mpg difference & the truck itself seems much nicer... The only other thing the Ram has going for it is the motor is still very accessible conpared to the Ford, but ince you do an EGR delete in the Ford it free's up a lot of room as well & if I bought either of these trucks they would immediately get a DPF/DEF & EGR delete immediately...

All of the Big 3 make a good product. At this point it comes down to personal preference and price. However in this comparison I thinks it's pretty impressive that the Powerstroke got less than 1mpg less while having 70 more horsepower and 125 more lbs of torque.

But it also has 2 more cylinders. I'm sure if the ford had v6 rather than a v8, first it wouldn't come close to the same power, and second, if the dodge had a straight 8, it would be huge, and it would use more fuel.

I have issues with these tests. The longer you sit I mean I know real world. But say for instance you catch the green light for exiting and entering freeway limiting down time. Vs the other truck getting stuck at both red lights idling for 2-3 min and the dead stop take off vs rolling acceleration. The difference in these 2 are very marginal. .8 miles a gallon can be made up on one truck and or lost on the other.

Hey guys thanks once again! Ok so that’s mileage, but what about ease of travel and towing? We all know it’s down owner 100 lbs ft. Plus about 60 hp? So there must be a difference? But that was still only 12,000 lbs? Or at least under the max rating. But I love the Ram, it’s just about like one I would build if ordering! Either that or a 3500 Aisin. Yes even over a Ford or Chevy. Just due to the idea of ownership for many years with the ease of maint room you have with the Ram over the others. Plus the interiors are actually nicer than Fords and Chevy highest trims. Sure Ford has more electric drivers aids. But I’ve been towing trailers, from 18 wheels down to my little travel trailer and do not need “aids” or what I’ll call glovebox drivers! The one item with the Ram I’m not too crazy about, is the way you cannot get the nicer bright exterior colors on that particular Harvest Package in the Harvest colors of the nice blue of the test Truck or the Harvester Red, with either you are limited with the black interior, where as if you go with black, white or silver, the only other colors available with the Harvest Package, you can get, depending on trim level, the interiors with Canyon Brown, Light Frost Beige That adds some lightness to the interiors instead of basic black! In a Laramie you can get Pearl White with the beautiful Black, Brown Light Frost Beige, on the Line Star the same is available, but in bright white not Pearl White.

My wife bought a 2018 Ram 2500 Tradesman Crewcab 4wd with the 6.7L Cummins. The 3.42 gears seem a little tall. And at some point the truck will get 35" or 37" tires to replace the 275/70-18 tires. So I will have the dealer change the gears to 3.73 or 4.10. The truck is rated to tow a very good weight. But I expect that I will probably have a CAconversions.com Allison 1000 upgrade done at some point. The shocks have been upgraded to Bilsteins in the back. But since my wife said no lift yet. Eibachs in the front. I changed to Carbon/metallic brake pads all around. The truck now behaves more like a sports car on twisty mountain roads. Odd thing though. My wife traded in a 2014 Ram 1500 Tradesman Crewcab 4wd 3.6L gasser, with 3.21 gears. The fuel economy is the same between both trucks. She says I should have done a better sales job on the Cummins VGT engine brake. And she would have never bought the 3.6L gasser!!!!! Ever!!!!!! My wife is a cheapskate miser. The price difference between the 2 trucks was about $14k. We live in a semi-rural area with flash floods. And sandy spots as traps when pulling over to let emergency vehicles pass. It rarely snows that much, but has been 3' deep. The 2500 is a monster compared to the '79 Toyota Corolla she drove when we got married in '85. I had a '79 Ford F250 Supercab 8' bed. She claimed my truck was ridiculous! Now her 2500 Cummins is the ultimate vehicle. How times change.

What was the axle ratio of each truck? .9 mpg in a single run is a wash. The Ram likely had the 3.42 gears. The Ford either has 3.31 or 3.55.
@alexsmba
@alexsmba 6 жыл бұрын
The Real John Smith the axle ratio on its own is irrelevant. The transmission ratios aren’t going to be the same, the tire diameter may be different too.
@therealjohnsmith4811
@therealjohnsmith4811 6 жыл бұрын
Alex Stelling I agree. There are so many variables its ridiculous. Axle ratio, tire size, trans gearing, and driving habits all play a factor. One hard acceleration even will throw it a few tenths. Thats why I say .9 is a wash.

It be nice to see the big 3 get away from the torque and HP marketing wars and improve on these trucks fuel efficiency. All these trucks have plenty of power, hope to see increased fuel economy in the future. Great video, thanks for sharing.

Agreed. You have to have a CDL to even come close to maxing out these rigs and you have to consider that a good majority are going to be daily drivers with some occasional towing and hauling. Most diesel trucks I see actually towing are usually a horse trailer or a 5th wheel camper which are well within the tow ratings of diesel trucks 10+ years ago.
@anthonyj810
@anthonyj810 5 жыл бұрын
Only way to improve fuel economy in a full size diesel truck would be to make it lighter and smaller motor. Or delete and tune it. You can get a 3-5 mpg increase from deleting and tuning any diesel with the right tune. It's a no brainer as it pays for it's self within 2 years with all that fuel you save and you'll be able to get 15 years out of the truck no problem if you take care of it.

It's also nice to see the motor in the Ram. All you can see in the Ford is plumbing and God help you if you need service after the warranty. The cab must be lifted off the frame to work on the Powerstroke.

Jorge The beast really not a whole lot of "sport" about the SS other than it came with a bigger engine, stronger transmission, and all wheel drive. And some looks stuff like sat lower, bumpers, and badging. And they're dogs compared to today's 6.2L and 6 and 8 speed transmissions.

Drew w the ss does 0-60 in 6 seconds while the regular 5.3L silverado does 0-60 in almost 9 seconds how is the ss not a sports truck? It can beat the Ford F-150 raptor in a quarter mile race not by much but it’s still on top even compared to the modern trucks today

Maybe, but it is a "capless" tank, so by definition... no cap. (I kept mine just to keep dust out, but when I lose it I'll have to decide if its worth replacing.)
@G.W._Cook

Usually, "capless" only means the owner doesn't have to remove a cap, but it's not actually capless, as there's a rubber boot in the door to seal when it's closed. I didn't see one here. It's a bit odd indeed.

ShinerBock2007 is that the consensus among Ram owners? Have people with the 68RFE tried to bump their power output and ran into transmission woes? Honest questions because I truly dont know, I just have a hard time believing that Ram needs a beefier transmission just because of a 100ft/lb bump in torque output while still offering the 68 on 3500 trucks that still can see quite a bit of stress.
@ALMX5DP
@ALMX5DP 6 жыл бұрын
ShinerBock2007 thank you for expanding on that and being honest. I completely agree. And seeing as (I think) all chassis cab medium duty versions of these trucks all have "detuned" engines is only proof that this is a stupid numbers game that internet fanboys love to cling onto.

I know a guy who bought a new 3500 with a 68rfe. removed the trans not long after purchase for an upgrade and really regrets doing it at all. has had nothing but trouble from what he has told me. also told me the hot setup is to swap the older 4 speed with upgrades into that new truck and it will tow more and be stronger overal. just hearsay.. he has said it's been a learning experience for sure.

Weight towed: 12500 lbs. Distance: 98 miles. Ford: 10 mpg. Ram: 11 mpg. If this "test" is valid, the Ram mpg is 10% better than Ford mpg. The Ford payload rating is about 700 lbs more than Ram, which is about a 30% increase. [from prior TFL vid: Nissan Titan XD CTD pulled 7000 lbs box trailer over 98 miles and achieved 11 mpg]. I'd say the 3/4T diesel trucks compare very favourably for mpg. Also, I think many truckers would trade 10% less mpg for 30% more payload, so Ford may keep its #1 spot. Hello TFL: have you done this test for the Chevy?
