I review a 2022 RAM 2500 Cummins 6.7L Diesel Engine as a heavy duty mechanic and see how well this engine can tow a heavy trailer. we look at acceleration, fuel economy (mpg), engine braking, engine performance and engine design in comparison to a 2023 Ford F250 powerstroke to determine what is the Best Diesel engine for a pick up truck.

I hope everyone is having a good long weekend! Today I am behind the wheel of this awesome powerful 6.7L Cummins Turbo Diesel Engine. and we are towing a heavy trailer behind this ram 2500 diesel.
So the first notable thing was the squat with the fully loaded up trailer. this truck squatted an extra inch over the F250 powerstroke which I think is probably associated with ram coil suspension set up.
one I got on the road, the cummins exhaust brake is absolutely amazing. it is pretty powerful and will stop the truck very well. when I was on the highway going down some steep hills the exhaust brake kept us at the perfect speed and is by far better then the Powerstrokes exhaust brake
in terms of acceleration, the Powerstroke was a much faster engine with a full load behind it. the Cummins did feel a little sluggish on the top end performance in comparison to the Powerstrokes top end power.
another very notible thing about the Cummins is the engine design. this engine is an inline 6 design which has a number of advantages. the first being the natural advantage of making torque extremely well and very low int he RPM band. this is amazing for towing.
fuel economy in the Cummins when towing was a little bit worse then the Powerstroke but with 14,000lbs behind the truck the Cummins was a pretty efficient engine.
But the weak point for the cummins in the RAM 2500 was the 68RFE tranmission. to me this is a little bit of a let down. this tranmission is not a very strong or good unit and only has 6 gears which greatly limits the versatility of this cummins engine when it comes to towing big hills like we did.
conversely the 6.7L powerstroke with it's 10 speed transmission is always in the torque band allowing the engine to perform very well at all speeds. the other notible thing is that the top gear for the ram 2500 is a pretty weak gear and has been known to burn up under loads.
I hope ram comes out with a better transmission in the future for this awesome cummins engine to really let it shine.
overall the low end torque coming out of this 6.7L Cummins diesel engine is amazing to see, this resulted in the truck almost never having to downshift on hills which was cool to see.
But I had to give this one to the powerstroke simply because of its ability to pull the loaded trailer up big hills better.

I pull my 7500 lb camper through the Colorado Rockies with my 2020 Ram 2500 diesel. Plenty of power and just love the engine brake. It takes all the stress out of the long steep descents. For the uphill, I simply pre-shift down (gear limiter) to 5th before the lugging. I’ve heard it is easier on the transmission as well. Thank you for the video. Cheers from Colorado.

I still think there is a market spot for the Cummins (so). For someone who only tows or hauls part time but still wants to do it with a diesel. Or are only towing medium loads such as boats. The Cummins SO is a good motor to consider. They get good mileage and make respectable power. If your towing heavy equipment or equivalent. The Cummins HO would be a better choice but it will get 2-3 miles less per gallon. Even though Ford and Chevy are making more power. I still like the advantages Cummins has, especially in terms of simplicity. In the long run you have less injectors, less valve components, just easier to work on in some ways and less things to replace.

Can't go wrong with a Cummins or Powerstroke. I own a Ford myself but the hard truth is they all will do what you need them too and long as you keep good maintenance on them, they should last a long time. Good fuel, good oil and change your fuel filters. No reason half a million KM without major work. Anything mechanical can fail and will eventually.

My questions: 1) I agree that a 6 speed does have gearing limits, but does the increased HO torque eliminate them? 2) Does the Aisin and 68 have different gearing and if so does that hurt or help in any way? 3) Gas mileage comparison. 4) Diesel World magazine a couple issues back stated the Aisin is the best towing transmission. And I'm not convinced the higher speed capability is always a good thing...here in Wyoming, we're seeing a lot of Fords with trailers in the ditches because they think because they CAN pull a hill at 80, they SHOULD.

Don't think the 2500 is necessarily the right home for the Cummins which is seriously heavy piece of compacted graphite iron (1000 lbs +) which puts the 2500's payload in the 1/2 ton range. Factor in tongue weight, gear, passengers etc and there's not too much left over- think the 3500 is the better choice for hauling/towing. I would disagree some about the Ford's transmission being the edge going uphill. It helped to be sure but the standard Power Stroke's 105 more horsepower and 200 lb/ft more torque didn't hurt either. I thought the SO Cummins acquitted itself pretty well- it's a rocket compared to the diesels I drove years ago- iirc the original Dodge Ram Cummins had 160hp and 400 lb/ft torque and Fords weren't much better. The SO Cummins wasn't the quickest but it got the job done and it did a much better job going down hill. The HO Ram doesn't make the biggest numbers either and its Aisin tranny has only six gears but there must be a reason most of the hotshot drivers I see are driving them.

the 3500 HO cummins is a very very solid unit. and yes the powerstroke does have more power but I think the gearing also hurt the cummins. But I completely agree with you that the 2500 platform is a tuff place for a 1000lbs + engine.

Ford has done a great job with their 6.7 PSD. Ford has to get bonus points for engineering and manufacturing their own diesel engine and transmission. Like Apple, designing everything in house gives you an advantage. The engine and transmission were literally made to work together since it's all Ford. Unlike Ram who has to make a Cummins engine play nicely with a Aisin transmission using FCA software.

This might be a hot take, I believe the Ram 2500 models are behind ford and Chevy. The SO Cummins makes the least amount of power, and Ram only becomes competitive with its HO 3500 model with the AISIN, where it starts to make more power than the Chevys and is a lot more competitive with Ford. I’m a Ram fanboy so it pains me to say it, but a new transmission and maybe even a new update to the Cummins motor is probably needed to keep Ram in this race. The SO is just underpowered compared to others making the 2500 (with coil springs) a boneheaded play. These 6th gen rams better come soon and with a big upgrade

The issue with the 6 gears has everything to do with usable RPM. The Powerstroke has 1000 RPM to tap into. The Cummins just doesn’t have that available, so there was no way for it to downshift again. Even with the older 6speed 6R140 Ford transmission the Powerstroke would’ve climbed that hill with ease. I don’t know if it would’ve made use of 4th gear in that same scenario, but it would’ve had the option because it can rev higher than the Cummins.

I am in the market for a truck. I've own nothing but rams but I am considering a Ford 250. Mainly because of the tranny, seats were comfy even in lower trims. I would gamble on the fuel pump on the ford and would buy some warranty for that. The springs as well. I was looking at getting a gasser because would be towing around 9500lbs. When i looked at the trim level in the ford {xlt,fx4}. The price was almost the same between the two. That being said I'd stick with diesel. The gas engines in the HD's are not exactly bullet proof nowadays so it's a real crap shoot.

Ram Ho diesel vs the Ram Power Wagon is like apples to oranges, they are not the same. my 3500 Ram HO diesel is quicker in 0-60 than 6.4 hemi and is 2000 pounds heavier. But I wouldn't take the 3500 in the mud. The Power Wagon thrived in the mud and nasty stuff disconnection sway bars locking front and rear the 4:10 gears 12000 lbs winch from the factory. And the downhill decent on the Power Wagon is killer you can adjust it to 1/2 a mile an hour. For all the off-road tricks it does it gives up a lot in payload. Now the 3500 will tow your 40,000 pounds down the pavement very easily, so it is really what you are looking for in a truck

Ford does not option a 3.73 with the diesel. That's only available with the 6.7 in a F350 chassis cab or with the gas engines in the pickups. The 3.31 will not keep up with a 4.10 in an HO but the 3.55 surpasses it by a long shot. If it was 4.10 to 4.10 there is no comparison. At 1900rpm that ford is making more than 1000lbft. This Cummins at 2200rpm is right around 800lbft. Thats a sizeable difference, not so much after the 3.31 vs 3.73 axle. Even the HO Cummins with a 3.73 will be on par with the powerstroke. I've looked at DRW in the last few weeks. The smaller cab, smaller overall length, 2011 design, 6 speed, all hold me back from making the change. Only part that is appealing is the $16k difference in price(F350 XLT is 96k, Ram Big Horn is 80k) but that 16k makes up for a lot of differences, even with the HO it's not a comparison

The Cummins engine producing torque at lower end better than powerstroke isn’t fact anymore like it used to be, the long connecting rods because of shallower steel pistons have become almost as long as Cummins connecting rods and now produce peak torque at 1600 rpm and peak hp at 2600 rpm vs Ram 1800 rpm peak torque and 2800 rpm peak horsepower, so it’s not really Cummins torque king anymore and as for reliability they’re very similar besides 22 Cummins blowing engines because of their pushrods rocker arm kits being cheaper metal.
