after long overlooking the 28mm lens I finally decided to give it a go myself and see what kind of results i could produce with this focal length, having been almost exclusivley a 35mm lens shooter

28 and 50 are a staple combination for many photographers. 35 is cool for just one lens, but 28 captures more context and multiple subjects, which can be important depending on your compositions.

For me, 28mm, 50mm, and 85mm are the three must-have primes. Throw in a 24-120mm zoom and your all set. But, if we're talking about just owning one lens only, I would pick a 40mm.

Agree too. My Hexanon 40mm on Konica Autoreflex T is an all purpose lens , when using the camera without a bag. But on trips i throw 28mm, 50mm and 135mm in the bag.

28mm has been my most favourite personal stuff lens for years. I have the Canon 28mm f2,8 IS which is very nice but as I´ve moved to Fuji lately I bought the 18mm f2 as a 28mm equivalent. Extremely happy with lens- very, very small and f2...Paired with an xt-1,2,3 it´s just perfect. If you add the 35mm f1,4 or f2 you have a combo that can handle most things. Thanks for sharing this video.

I totally agree I now have a 28mm Nikkor, very much love it as it is my go lens on my Nikon camera both film, and digital, I love the warm rendition that it give to the image, and even though that the 28mm that I have is a 3.5 lens but I love it....

Thanks for your interesting video. I agree with the points you make. It's strange that the 28mm is relatively unloved on cameras when it is hugely popular with millions of smartphone users. I've used a Canon 6D for around a year, mostly using the 24-105 and 70-200 L lenses. I used the 24-105 on different zoom settings, to help decide which primes to get as a lightweight all day carry/travel option. After some experimenting I settled on a 28mm f/2.8 and a 50mm f/1.8 and these two lenses seem to be a versatile and powerful combination for me. I suppose opinions will vary on the 28mm, especially if you want to shoot unobtrusively, but I use the 28mm for landscape and wide scenes and the 50mm for environmental portraits, and used in this way the combination works well for me.

The 28 is great for up close especially when you can play with the distortion but yeah, you gotta be real close. I mostly shoot 35 because it's a good compromise between 28 and 50mm, also my cameras have frame lines for 35 haha. 28mm is usually way cheaper too for some reason, even with SLRs

Good vid and nice photos! I've always been more of a 50mm shooter myself but when i bought my first Leica M camera, the M8, a couple of years ago I wanted something that would give me a focal length that was a normal equivalent to a 135 film format lens. I had already gotten used to shooting on full frames cameras. I bought a Voigtlander 28mm f2 which gives roughly a 35mm field of view on the M8. it took some getting used to but I adjusted to 35mm. Then I bought an M9 and put the 28mm on that and my world opened up.I started loving the photos from the 28mm. I just recently used the 28mm on my M240 for a job shooting a school science day. i got some really decent shots of the kids in their lab coats doing experiments. The administrators from the school emailed me about an hour after I delivered the photos telling me that loved the photos and already had ideas of using several of them for promotional ads for the school.I rarely even use a 50mm and it was once my walking around focal length. You might want to check out the Voigtlander 28mm f2 for your M6. It's not that expensive, yes I know that is relative, and I think it's a really nice lens.

If you look back at the legends of the past, most have two out of these 3 lenses, 28 35 or 50, it all depended on ones taste, so depending on how you like to shoot will dictate which two of the three which suits. These days things change and i wouldn't be surprised if you add a 85 or a 24 into the mix.

28 mm gives me a "Reality" look. while I look at a screen that only occupies a part of my field of view, if the video on that screen was shot in 28mm, it somehow looks like reality, like I am watching the real world with my own eyes. There is a good reason why the 28m lens is the gold standard of some of the most iconic shots we remember.

I moved to shooting with a Ricoh GRII and I have to say, if you're not seasoned in shooting, or kind of new, learning to compose with a 28 is not easy right off. It's so nice to have something where you don't have to get so close. But after a while, after you use it, and shoot with it, and keep shooting, it starts to make sense and it's a great lens to shoot with. I just think it's kind of hard to get into, when I look through a 35 or 50, something about them make me feel more comfortable, 28 makes me feel like I need to try harder. If that makes sense.

There's a reason why the Leica Q or the very affordable Ricoh GR series are the best street cameras in my humble opinion. I love SLR's and had a Nikon FE with a 50mm 1.4 ai lens for years before I replaced it with a Minolta XD but for street, 28mm kicks ass these days in digital format. The Ricoh especially enabling the shooter to snap off a great street shot without getting attention. You can even shoot from the hip with those things after a little practice. BTW I used to shoot a Rollei 35S for my street shots (, Melbourne, Sydney-Australia, NYC, Montreal) to name a few and found that to be a great little instinctive shooter. I enjoyed your review. I'm in Byron Bay, by the way.

2.8 is considered fast on all fronts. No it’s not f/2, f/1.4 or f/1.2. But leave that last aperture out of the conversation and you’re essentially 2-stops away from bottoming out 99.9% of all production lenses. With a film camera shooting lower than 2.8, especially in street photography is way too wide open anyhow. And speaking of “anyhow”, glad to see a new vid on your channel. I been rockin with you for quite a while, love your content. Good vid. 28mm is a 28mm. 35mm is a 35mm. I think better jump from a 35mm is a 24mm though. I have a 24, 50 and 70-210 in my kit and I feel like I have all the coverage I’ll ever need. Once again, good vid. Peace out!

EyE Loves the 28mm focal length. Does Double Duty for me, as I shoot in both full frame & APS-C with vintage manual lenses. 28mm on my full frame, of course, & 42mm on my Fujifilms. 40-ish mm happens to be my preferred “nifty fifty” (Konica Hexagon 40mm f1.8 on my full frame), so the 28 works out for me in a different manner for each ✅

The one, big issue is the interaction with people, with the 28 is harder to go away unseen, and that may be or not a problem, also based on where are you do this. In some countries people may be more open / relaxed, in others not ... or NOT. Is also a matter of style, how much context you want to reveal.

Depends on how you shoot and compose. Do you accentuate foregrounds? Do you shoot in the middle of the action? Then shooting with a 28 will make your photo look different from shooting with a 35. I was never a 35 guy. It was either a 50 or 28 for me.

Yo Coop. I’d say the act of making a picture of the subject is already an act of intrusion. Whether welcome or unwelcomed. The wider a lens focal length is, the depth of field gets deeper though. To the extent layering of subjects in the composition occurs in addition to including elements of the background / environment. It’s definitely a different focal length to master. Meaning we’d have to work harder for a composition. I am still practicing using a 35mm. And getting familiar with a focal length takes time. At least a year I’d say. Thanks for the conversation Coop. Hope you’re having a great coffee somewhere someday.

Best street lens ever made is Nikon's 28-50 f:3.5 AI-S zoom from 1984-85(E series lens redone in metal as best I can tell). Roughly the size of two pancake lenses. Manual focus but it takes a heartbeat to get used to it. I have it on a D750 over my D850 because it's lighter and works faster on it. 28mm: - you can have more layers in your photos, and therefore more interesting shots to look at. - It’s more challenging to use as a photographer, but when you nail a shot, you nail a shot. - people take more time to look at the picture as it’s slightly wider than the natural human eye so they naturally spend more time looking at it. As an illustration, check out joe Greer who shoots mostly a 28mm on his m6. He is amazing at building layers and colours into his shots. Overall it’s a tough but fantastic focal length to shoot at.

There are subtle differences in the compression and how the lens renders your image. Stepping back with a 35mm would change the composition and what’s included in the frame. If you want your subject to fill a relevant portion of your frame, the image you get with a 35mm will include less of the surrounding and the background will appear closer/larger then with a 28mm. Yes, both shots can work but not in the same way.

Both great general purpose focal lengths, but I went with 28mm too. And I never paid attention to the "it's a dull focal length, neither one thing or the other" brigade. As your pics show, it is not a dull focal length! Seperate subject but what's with all this 'bistro' jazz music that's in vogue on photography channels? I saw an asian guy's photo vlog where he had classical playing as a backdrop .... wow, so much nicer. You don't strike me as the kind of guy who would normally listen to that elevator be-bop jazz or whatever it's called. Find something better, mate! Short answer: No! Why? Because a 28mm isn't a 35mm. Every Lens has it's place and it's reason to excist. If u want to reframe more in post or like wider frames or pushing the camera closer than go ahead, if not than don't. These discussions are just causing more confusion in my opinion. Just shoot what u feel comfortable with, but always try out new stuff to never stop learning.

I think the whole 28mm 35mm issue on the magnitude you are describing, only takes place in YOUR head and not so much in the real world ! Of course you need to consider that at 28mm things close to you will be more enlarged to things further away so if you shoot people in line you better off taking them more from the front side. So getting more close to a subject with 28 mm is not so bad and a bit overdone in your story putting the camera almost against the video recording lens. If you want to get close, go 50 or more !!

I totally disagree. Its amazing how much that little bit of difference from one focal length to the next csn literally make all the difference in the world. For instance. I just got a 24mm 2.8 for my newly acquired sony a7c. And I have to say that it's pretty boring to me. About as boring as a 35mm. I went to b&h and tried out the 28mm f2 (because I used to use it regularly on the Ricoh Gr and missed it) and instantly realized and was reminded why I loved that focal length so much. Something about it is just right in the pocket for me. Perfect amount of width without being too much, so that it just begins to resemble phone cameras. Vs the 35 let's say that too me, and many others, is equally as boring. Not quite wide or close enough. That being said I forgot how much of a difference that little bit of a change in your focal length can make. It's like too much or not enough salt when your eating. Maybe some people prefer things bland I dunno. Personally I like my food spicy! And mad flavorful lol!

@@akyerit Problems of a Boring shot are 49% the photographer, 49% the scenery and maybe 2% the focal length. A boring shot is a boring shot , 5 mm more or less doesn't make your boring shot an award winning image. Only bad photographers blame it on the equipment.

@@RS-Amsterdam well tell that to all the amazing cinematic directors that never liked the 35mm focal length and instead opted for the 40mm or the 28mm. Like Sergio Leone for starters. Not saying that you can't get dynamic photos from any lens. But you can't honestly say that the focal length is not that important. To me focal length is everything. That's the same as saying it isn't the camera or the equipment it's the photographer. Sure a bad photographer is a bad photographer, but a good photographer knows how to use those focal lengths as they are designed and intended. And the 35mm is just classic. I would agree because it's so "regular" it actually takes more skill to make a shot more dynamic. But you just can't get the same shot from a 35 that you can from a 28. And I've had a 35 forever, and know it very well. And have taken amazing shots with it. But I just utilized it way different than I did a 28. And I don't prefer it. Simple as that. Some prefer a 50. Some prefer an 85. To each their own. The 35 was designed to be an all compromising lens. But in that compromise, it kind of lost its edge. Kind of like Obama when he was in office hahaha. That's also why I prefer the more classic 40mm. Just that much tighter than the 35 to give a little more compression and intrigue to your shots

The 28mm is a great focal point. The Canon FD 2.8 is a great option and and a good investment. If you are seeking a faster 28mm F/2 then head for the Nikon 28mm f/2. The design and build quality is subblime unlike the canon fd28mm f/2 which is not well built and succumbs to environmental factors.
