My prediction is that as streaming becomes more expensive and more fragmented and spread across multiple services more and more people will turn to the 2nd hand DVD/Bluray market.

Another advantage of physical movies are the behind the scenes, alternate endings and deleted scenes that you can’t get from streaming services. These are fun to watch depending on the film.

If Hollywood, the music and gaming industries want my cash... it needs to be physical. But I do think, especially where music and movies are concerned, these formats will be around forever. Movies in the coming years, will start to bounce back.

Streaming had it's moment in the sun, but i don't see it as the main source of entertainment for every single household. Streaming is a soulless experience and once people realize that they don't own anything, the quality is garbage compared to watching a blu ray/4 disc, content can be edited and companies can lose content at any time then the casuals will become collectors and we will see more people in the hobby. It's already happening and more people are cancelling subscription services. The best thing a family can do is own the physical media to enjoy at anytime, having something tangible. It's art in my opinion and owning a piece of history will always be special to me. Having the best of both worlds (if tech savvy) would be to own the physical media and rip it to a home server, which is great. Part of the reason why I love and miss video stores is the experience it gave to renting a film, bringing it home and watching it together as a family. I think something as simple as that in today's society would have a positive impact and bring families together. The 90's/2000's was a great period in time, but I guarantee you that physical media is here to stay and it is only going to continue to grow. The shift will be where we buy our media from, but don't be surprised if retailers from the past appear from the ashes and pick up the pieces from best buy's mistakes. Just my 2 cents, but people have more power than they think. Don't support nonsense, physical forever.

Ever increasing streaming services all raising their prices... when I realized I was paying $120 a month for streaming, I canceled everything and started buying physical media again. The quality increase is astounding. Even a regular blu ray looks better than most streaming, and the 4k discs are mind blowing! Especially older films with a lot of film grain look stunning. Top Gun on 4k disc with dolby vision looks incredible! I'm enjoying movies so much more since I started buying physical. Pretty sure I read somewhere 2023 had a 20% increase in physical media movie sales. I think people are getting turned off with the never ending streaming services passing content around to each other. All it does is make things far more expensive and frustrating for the consumer.

There's one more reason about owning movies on physical medias, most of our entire collections might have their movies uncensored, and no adds during the movies... Many adds during the movies is really annoying... Also, a lot of movies never made it to even DVDs let alone Bluray or 4K like everyone says...

I started collecting more vhs-4k blu rays and I agree. Get what you can when you can. I’ve been better at collecting what I want rather than just to collect. I’ve been writing down the movie, format, and who I watch it with since October and it’s been so fun. Haven’t felt as engaged when watching movies as I have lately. Can’t believe even goodwill has had great new 4k blu rays for like $5 or less! Great video guys, will keep collecting physics media you just don’t get the same feeling taking away quality from streaming it’s still something about getting up and pressing play

I've been buying my obscure horror movies and games from Amazon, Best Buy, and Ebay (among other places) the last 24 years. Amazon carries most of the Best Buy horror movies and a plethora of others. I'm with you on Besy Buy not having a sale to liquidate inventory, that's dumb and makes no sense. I made a big raid on their webstore and found the 3 or 4 movies I wanted (out of hundreds) cheaper on Amazon. Worst Buy is basically an appliance store now. And I don't need a fridge or TV currently 🤣. Thankfully I have most of the retro games, horror movies, and underground metal vinyl I want from collecting for so long (I've had to make spreadsheets to keep track of what I want/don't have so I don't inadvertantly double dip). I've been overhauling my movie purchases on Amazon and ebay the last couple years due to the streaming takeover and eventual extinction of the platform at most retailers. This is an awesome episode, I'm glad the awareness is being raised. Cheers

Such a cult classic. I hate that they dont show any old movies anymore, and especially not lesser known ones. Like 15 years ago or so i think that started to change. Theyll show titanic or braveheart and the same modern movies over and over again. Stuff like the thing, planet of the apes, invasion of the body snatchers will never be aired ever again. Two out of those have never even been broadcast during my life. And none of those have ever been on any streaming service ive seen.

I'm picking up Blu Ray while it is cheap - pennies on the dollar. Streaming services face difficult choices, continue to lose titles by taking no action, raise subscription prices to renew the licences or introduce ADVERTS! Also I firmly believe because it is so expensive to make a movie now they don't take risks. I find movies from the 80s, 90s are more rewatchable than the ones today - stock up!

Your comment about 4K discs vs streaming is on the nose. The audio quality difference is gigantic. And in movies with a lot of motion you begin to see the downside of the lower video bit rate as well. I can partly accept a lower video signal depending on what I’m watching but the audio difference is so gigantic for me.

As for movies, I've been trying to play catch up on all the stuff that came out on streaming services that I wanted to see- the Star Wars shows, Demon Slayer, Spy X Family & Stranger Things were all up there, but I've only been grabbing 1 a month, right now. Got a huge list, though. Plus, CDs have been getting backed up while I've spent most of the last couple years focusing primarily on the other two.

It's getting small cause they are letting it happen. Duh right, but what i mean is that they need to spruce up the availability on the shelves otherwise we're all going online looking for games that big box stores refuse to carry and put on shelves. Back in the day there was a buffet of options at big box stores instead of just the popular titles.

With the demise of physical media, and subscriptions turning into just as expensive as cable to a degree, will people resort to illegally downloading movies and tv shows? Digital media has no owner ship. You're paying for a license which can revoked. Recently company's like Capcom have been adding DRM to a 15 year old game, because they hate mods and cheat-engines. Why restrict it in Single Player games? Meaning, you don't own your purchased games. They should change it to rent instead of buy. Because that's exactly what we're doing. And don't get me started on all the Streaming services.

Knew it was coming, subscription services make more money and they can say it's for the environment. I think the average American pays 300 dollars a month on subscriptions they barely use

If it's about downsizing store sizes and saving space, I don't understand why the movies can't be placed like books where you read the spines as you pass on the shelves. Does the cover have to be showing? That kind of placement takes up the most space. I had assumed the space-saving was why the releases often came with a blu-ray included (and same blu-rays including the dvd version). But probably it's more just an industry push to do away with physical and have everybody stream because there's so much more money in streaming. They can control the product much better. Remove it from release when they want. Re-edit it, re-license it to another platform, etc. Demand builds up too when a movie is out of circulation. Another question you have to consider is if hardware companies will keep making UHD players. I couldn't help but notice that Sony only put out a couple of players and then never released a newer model, and there's not that many other choices besides the two game consoles.

Back in 2022, best buy had better deals for movies on black friday compared to 2023. The movies that best buy sold back in 2023 cost more for the same old movies and there were barely any deals on movies on black friday in 2023. If best buy stuck with offering really good deal on movies, more people would buy the movies because they were cheaper instead of paying 30 or more even for old movies and even the 4k movies are barely on sale at best buy. There were better deals on micro sd cards and even solid state drives. The stock of xbox, ps5 and nintendo switch games have shrunk at the best buy that I normally go to and it seems like they barely have much in stock. The games for the xbox, ps5 and nintendo switch are barely on sale and it seems like certain items that best buy sells are on sale. The best buy employee told me awhile ago that best buy prices change every sunday but I don't know if that still happens since it seems like the prices seems to cost more on certain items and some items only go on sale. I always try to find a reasonable price and deal when something that I'm looking for goes on sale. It seems harder to find stuff on sale at best buy.

I think you make some valid predictions. I think the normal big box distribution of DVDs will go away and will turn into online limited run type availability. Time will tell.

This a bit off the subject but, if when you bought a physical Disc/cartridge back before the evil digital days. I hear alot that you were basically just purchasing the right to use the game & license and the media was there because it was the only way to deliver the game & liceance. So if the media becomes un usable. Like Disc gets scratched or a contact goes out on a cartridge or something, is the game provider obliged to provide you with a working version of the game? The warranty I don't think that would apply since that I believe was basically there for any disfunction coming from factory. It's really got me thinking with all the talk lately about physical media. Only thing if this would be the case you would be given a download of game. I know they don't have piles of old games sitting around or they are not going to fire up the plant to make you a new copy of Super Mario bros. 3. BTW when vudu first started you could transfer your physical movies to digital for free, 200 a year. Now they charge to do that. I can't believe the video game companies didn't try something like this in an attempt to get more people brainwashed by the digital Nightmare. Yes they would Loose the download payment of that game but that person would probably never use digital games if not for being able to transfer a physical game do digital. And maybe the person would then keep buying digital. And they would probably kill the used market or hurt it pretty badsome people would probably sell the physical games after being able to transfer to digital. That would probably lower the prices of Disc based used games since alot of people would be selling at one time. But I don't know I kinda got off subject sorry for the long comment and thank you to anyone who read the whole message.

Hey guys! I was just checking the price of some of my games (which I do from time to time) and one of my less expensive ones (bought it new for $19) is now selling for an average of $70-80 brand new. I'm talking about Alan Wake Remastered, for PS4. Any reason you can think of for this pricing? The PS5 version sells for way less, and similar Remedy games like Control are selling for very cheap. Have a good one, cheers!

That is very interesting. Game prices are goofy. My guess would be a very small print run on the PS4. That's all I can think of.

I am starting to find that the only way for me to get games in the physical format is to purchase second hand (for older games) or buy online through Amazon or another online site. I am amazed at how fast the industry is moving away from physical. The next thing will be not purchasing games in digital format, but paying a monthly fee for streaming games. It is scary.

I worked at Suncoast throughout college in the early 2000's. Been buying DVDs and Blu Rays every year since. First two movies I ever bought were Eye of the Beholder (crap) with Ewan MacGregor and Suicide Kings (awesome) summer 2000. Tower Records was a great place for selection, but some DVDs were like 40 bucks from them. Clerks and Seven Samurai Cricterion were way expensive. Physical is dead. Just like print. Just too easy to download or stream. Physical will be treated like vinyl. It'll be a nostalgia gimmick in the future. If we don't blow ourselves up.

@@scottmasin741 Only problem was you couldn't play movies past soft PG. I remember playing Cannonball Run and The Emperor's New Groove on the stores VCR, all the while selling hundreds of season 1 Sopranos box sets, which, as we all know, was not violent or profanity-laden at all.

Guys, i feel physical media (in games, movies & music category) isn't going to die out (at least in this century). They can't eliminate physical comepletely b/c other countries dont have hi-speed internet access like we do...but they DO have money to buy their entertainment & conpanies that're pressing discs to distribute them. Companies know that US & some EU contries love conveinence over traveling/hunting for that disc/cart, so save money on making them solid & reap more profit, they decided. At least we can also import, and thank the Maker many publishwrs will include Eng. subtitles in imported games.
