I have to say that most of these comments are coming from people who don’t own or fully understand their van staal

I have a three-year-old Shimano Spheros 6000SW. My Spheros always gets dunked with a wave when I surf fish on Southern California beaches. I abuse my Spheros, and it keeps working. It's an easy reel to maintain. Is a Van Staal better? Yes. Is the Van Staal worth $800? Probably. Do I need a Van Staal reel? Not yet but If I continue to surf fish in the water I will probably get the new $500ish Van Staal VR reel.
@evanosburn14925 жыл бұрын
I got the same one and I put 475yds of 80lb of mine and it works great for amberjack offshore and for Cobia

Niceee! How does the drag hold up? I feel that it is underwhelming vs the heavy duty-ness of the reel

How’d you get 475 yards of 80 on it tho?

Hi how are you getting on with thyour VSX250 Bailed. i have been looking for one but cannot find it for sale with bail. and i didnt know there was a bail less kit for these reels. i thought you had to buy one or the other ?
@dannpakk Жыл бұрын
Unfortunately got rid of it during COVID. It was good while it lasted. There are bailless kits for them but I would stick with the originals because they are counterweighted appropriately
@ShorrockPaul Жыл бұрын
@@dannpakk Thanks for info. is it an after market bail less kit, not a Van Staal kit ?
@dannpakk Жыл бұрын
@@ShorrockPaul honestly I am unsure as I never personally have looked into this. I believe it may be OEM

After using it, rinsing it with freshwater after each use, it started making a noise closely described to a leaky faucet noise? Dribbing, clicking, the sound comes every 2 revolutions when reeling the reel either inverted or held vertically; silent when held normally. What do you think that is related to? Does your reel make a similar noise?
@dannpakk3 жыл бұрын
Never made a noise like that. Seems like the pinion shaft is having some issues with the teeth of the main gear
@jinsu05043 жыл бұрын
@@dannpakk really?? I had to go thru 2 new van staals because of the noise alone and the third one is also making it. Try holding your vs upside down near your ear, and reel it in.
@dannpakk3 жыл бұрын
@@jinsu0504 that's really odd. I had one of the older generations. Maybe their quality went down the drain? I never tried the vr models. Only the vs

@@dannpakk or maybe i got a bootleg/replica. got one from tackledirect...been making noise with both exchanges. ALSO i have two legend surf but the one I bought from my local retailer is MUCH MORE sensitive and lighter than the one bought from tackledirect..
@dannpakk3 жыл бұрын
@@jinsu0504 I know the 10'6 legend surfs are super sensitive. I exchanged for the 12' and it's great

Hollowcore on a spinning reel.?? The one time I did try using hollow core, it just twisted up like crazy, so I just stuck with using solid braid and Hollow core on my baitcasters and over heads.
@dannpakk3 жыл бұрын
I agree that hollow core on spinning reels can cause tons of windknots and a mess. This setup was used during my cape cod canal trip. I was throwing in 4 to 5oz eel lures to jig the bottom of the canal. Never had any issues during that time probably because the amount of lead I was casting.

Not true about the other reels locking up if dunked. I've dunked and surf fished with even a shimano Calcutta d series in saltwater. It's all about flushing it out freshwater and oiling.
@dannpakk5 жыл бұрын
Sure thing. You can flush out your reel everytime. For those who prefer not to have that intrusion and potential lock up, a sealed reel is the way to go.

My VR is kind of silence on drag.
@dannpakk6 жыл бұрын
Hi Vsonic, it is a VSX250 bailed :) I do not recommend the VR at the moment as there are areas where water can slightly leak. Maybe in the future when they fix these issues. Hope this helps!

Could’ve got a saltiga with the same money
@dannpakk6 жыл бұрын
Darain Kheng. Really depends on what kind of fishing you do. doghead saltiga runs $1200 and it is not fully sealed. They use a hydrophobic seal which doesn't prevent intrusion when dunked in water. A saltiga is an amazing reel in other aspect such as drag, line lay, and internals
@fernandosalas85895 жыл бұрын
In order to proof what your saying you need to test it out. I would only buy one if iam going to make money on it like commercial fishing.
@dannpakk5 жыл бұрын
Commercial fishermen would use a net for the most part. Again to reiterate what I said, this reel is for those who do not want to worry about dunking reels into the saltwater without having saltwater intrusion. If you plan to wash and open your reel everytime to clean, you will not need a van staal. If you want to just spray the reel down and forget about it, a van staal is something that should be considered
@fernandosalas85895 жыл бұрын
Daniel P. Some commercial Fisher men I know don't use nets you can look it up on KZfaq. In some states nets are illegal like in NY you can only use 5 hooks.
@dannpakk5 жыл бұрын
You are correct, not all commercial seem to use strictly nets. Nevertheless, this reel is not dependent on if one would make money using it or not. There are plenty of weekend warriors that truly are able to appreciate saltigas, vs, or zeebass. It's more about being more functionally fluid with the a reel. Just like a car, you could just get the cheapest car and drive a to b. This reel would be like a Land Rover. Built for tough terrains and a brutal drive, freeing one from the thought of the car failing midway.

hey daniel, what size st croix are you matching your reel with. just got myself a vsb 200 after watching your review...and bro it feels SOOOO HEAVY...im matching it to my 10'6'' legend surf and omg its too heavy for me to hold throughout the day....might have to just put bait on it and lazy fish...im really debating on returning both and just going with 9' legend surf with shimano stella CW 5000.. what do you think. should i just keep my set up or return? i honestlyy always wanted a van staal. but stella has same amount of max drag with minus 10 oz of weight. lol
@dannpakk3 жыл бұрын
Hey Matt, it really depends what type of fishing you plan to do. I use a vs250 with a st Croix legend surf 12 foot. I don't recommend the 10'6 as the tip action is very light. If you fully submerging into saltwater, I recommend using a van staal. Most people will not be in the water submerging their reel. Shimano Stella SW is an excellent choice but I would hold off until they integrate the technology from the newly built Shimano saragosa. I would recommend a Shimano 6k or 8k for the 10'6
