As a woodworker I don't mind my rough hardwoods not straight-lined since I can get more usable BF out of a slab and can sometimes give me more flexibility for my cut-list. I can't count how many times I thought "If that board was only a 1/2" wider" I have to cut one edge after drying anyway. I would imagine "sizing" your lumber makes drying and storage much easier for you. As always, enjoyed the video.

@ronallen6578

Hi ladies, Take this for what it's worth. I worked in logs, lumber and veneer production for about 40 years, so whether I know anything is questionable. My understanding of a flitch referred to a part of a log, normally a 1/2 or a 1/4 of a log. Flitches were then put into large vat of very hot water and allowed to soak for 3 to 7 days. This depended on the specie and were then sliced into veneer (Yea, I know too much information). An edger is what you have been demonstrating in your videos to cut the wane or bad edge or even to cut into specific widths of lumber (boards) . A resaw is a large band saw with boards fed into it vertically and the soul purpose was usually to cut a thicker board into 2 equally thick boards or whatever your order called for. It's not an edger, or I sure never saw it used for this purpose. You guys are the pros and I'm just giving you my take from my time having used all of this equipment. Like I said, take it for what it's worth. Most will say-----nothing😊😊. Enjoy your channel and I hope with this good weather, your dad is making hay in the woods and building inventory for the next wet period. Stay safe.

I think the terms get blurred !! So what is the term for a board with wane on it. I call it a flitch but my education on that is totally from this channel.
@ronallen6578
@ronallen6578 27 күн бұрын
@@scottsoper Hi Scott. I've only known them as boards. Short, sweet and simple. I was involved with a sawmill for the same company that same amount of time. I have no idea where the term "flitch" came from in the lumber profession. I, personally, worked at a veneer mill for close to 20 years. Then custom cut veneer and only knew of sections of logs to slice as flitches. Like I said, take this for what it's worth. As long as they get paid for there (their) 😢work, does it really matter😁😁
@richardlee2488
@richardlee2488 26 күн бұрын
Your not completely correct on the resaw description as they can be circular saws but not so popular but typically the clue is in the name. They are for recutting pieces. They can be for both primary or secondary sawing and can also be multiple heads. Hardwood grade mills may produce a 1/2/3/4 sided cant at the mill and then further process at the resaws. Softwood mills are a whole different level. Rows of multi head saws typically for highest production. Some do not even have a headsaw as the log can be squared by a chipper canter or even a profiler then straight to the resaws. A fresh log cut every 4 seconds... An edger is the second most important machine in the line unless you only want to sell live sawn lumber. I've only known of high end hardwood mills that can achieve that kind of market but the quantity and value of their stock is staggering.

For a small, direct to the public, rough lumber operation, most definitely edge finish your off cuts. If it was me I'd set up to provide S2S as well. Planer also gives you a way to chip your wane into mulch. It's not as efficient as a chipper but two jobs one tool. My son makes custom lawn and outdoor furniture, usually from decking cypress and sells his planer chips as high dollar mulch.

What we used to do when we had a mill and no edger, we would mark each flitch with the size we could get out of it ,over the height we had to make the first cut, and just pile them in separate pikes.they would be marked 4/6,6/10 ect in each pile. Then when we had lots of each we would edge them on the saw and could saw up to 12 at once

I enjoy watching your videos. For the last several years and most likely from now on, I moved to and live in Oregon, one of the places in the country run sawmill. Though I've never worked in a sawmill as sawyer, though I've worked in mills on shutdowns, etc. I find it interesting what y'all do. I grew up in S California, jus south of LA. I think that he majority of the women, mayhap many of the men, down there would not get what y'all do. They'd be more interested in getting to the beauty store for a different shade of fingernail polish then they would have any interest in getting out and doing, for example, what y'all do. I wanna commend you on your onscreen manner in which you conduct yourselves, your personalities, your intelligence regarding what you do, and on y'alls obvious strong work ethic. Keep making interesting videos and I'll keep watching them. Peace.

I love watching another family business succeed, reminds me when my 5 other siblings were your age growing up. You were brought up lumber, I was brought up in concrete block. I only have 90 subs and you have 187,000, I imagine if I show the new machines verses the antiques I show I might do better. It’s a no brainer why you would have an edger. i use the same mug all week without a wash, but i take my coffee black. meanwhile, the "resaw" i've known is a bandsaw upon which i would feed a plank through on edge to split it, often in half thickness-wise, to achieve a bookmatched pair of boards, the grain pattern of one mirroring that of the other; 'tis great for panels of doors or similar surfaces. rock on.

We bought the four roller version from Riehl Steel last fall. We are able to do 2 inch flitches without a problem. It does have a learning curve but at the end of the day we produce a lot more lumber out of the log. Darren puts out a quality product especially at that price point in my opinion. We also found him to be extremely responsive if you have any problems or questions. Might be time for an owners group. Not a lot of us compared to others but it could prove helpful.

That edger seems to have a gap big enough for two inch boards. Is it the fixed roller spacing that's stopping a two inch board going through? Would expect an engineering shop to be able to refit that edger to do two inch boards. Maybe ask around and see how they would do it and at what cost. Probably just involves making the top rollers adjustable.

This edger is an older edger, but the specs on the new one says 2 1/4 inch thick boards. Could there be an adjustment the ladies don't know about or is that just a newer spec on a new machine?

Great job with your edger! Just a little suggestion that you might want to consider using a laser pointer on your infeed saw when not using the fence?
