NO ONE is the villain. I love how all the characters are flawed. And the conflict between them is the only real "villain". It's easier to be on Mirabel's side because we are watching from her POV, and the run time is mostly her. So, it's easy to villainize everyone else and flatten their characters into one note.

I always found the scene of Mirabel's dad finding the vision really loving and heartfelt. His first instinct was to hide the vision. Not out of embarrassment but out of love for his daughter. His motives were to protect his daughter from the rest of the family.

I just now realized that Mirabel and Casita are so close because Casita CANT go to the magic rooms, but she CAN go into the nursery, where Mirabel has been longer than anyone else in the house. Meaning Casita was probably the one cheering her up while having turmoil over being giftless and bonding with her. This movie has so many little details

Nah, Casita can work in everyone else’s rooms. It just can’t help in Bruno’s because it’s basically a “dead spot” just like the space in the walls is. After he came back it’s likely the magic will start working in his room again.

I think Abuela's obsession with perfection and service comes from a need to "earn" the miracle like she says in the opening song. I'm guessing she has a subconscious feeling that something must be bad about her so she deserved to lose her husband, a lot of people feel irrational guilt like that.
@moonlit.michelle

Abuela probably has survivor guilt. She feels like she needs to live up to being saved and being given the miracle and the demanding townspeople only reinforce it since they come to the Madrigals to fix everything all the time.
@LorielSaysHi
@LorielSaysHi 2 жыл бұрын
Yeah, and she turned into the leader of the survivors to find their new home after pedro died and of course the miracle happening so she didnt had much time to mourn his death and prolly was pressured to keep up and help the townsfolk, due to her trauma, she had to have a perfect family if she and the townsfolk was given a miracle to have their new life and thought she had to put a facade and of course like you said she thought serving the community/townsfolk is to keep the miracle alive so she neglected the families feelings and built generational trauma, the house breaking after mirabel and abuelas fight is her realizing that their family is broken and realized the miracle was given because of pedros sacrifice and was given to have abuela had a life where she can live with her loved ones without any of you know what happened to her old village, she confronted mirabel and blamed what everything happened to herself and not mirabel when mirabel said it was her fault, she then told her mistake and never thought of why they were actually given the miracle, also someone said that the black scarf thingy is her way to represent she is still mourning and hasnt moved on, on what happened, and in the end of the movie she finally let go of the thing and has moved on

The reason Isabela is Abuela's favorite is that, in addition to being the firstborn grandchild of the Madrigals, Isabela is also the family member who most strikingly resembles her when she was younger. Also, the man that Isabela was betrothed to has a striking resemblance to Abuela's late husband. Basically, Abuela is trying to recreate her past using Isabela as a physical template for herself

Maybe the real villain was the generational tramua we made along the way 🤔 No, but seriously. Abuela was definitely the unintentional antagonist of the story. While trying to uphold her family to make sure they were worthy of the gifts, she neglected the PEOPLE in her family. Abuela being so focused on the miracle slowly destroyed her actual miracles; her children and grandchildren. Loved your reaction!

Constantly holding me to a high expectation, I felt like I would never be good enough for them. This is a huge issue for many families, especially ones with immigrant parents. I’m so glad Disney did a movie about this.
@jackistoast749

Yes, exactly. I have been looking for someone with this realization. Although Abuela is the antagonist, she is not a true villain. It was never in her intentions to hurt anyone, but the pressure that she put on the family is ultimately causing the family to collapse on itself. And what many people miss is that not only is it that this pressure that causes Bruno to leave and is most seen put on Mirabel, but it is also what is the actual cause of the magic and Casita literally collapsing in on itself.

Do you know that in "We don't talk about Bruno", Pepa said "Bruno walks in with a mischievous grin" and it showed Bruno walking in with a hood. Bruno attended the Wedding to support his sister by putting a hood. Since he's socially awkward, wearing a hood gives him confidence. But when he said "It looks like rain", they thought they would have a hurricane in the Wedding, that it was a prophecy. But it was actually because Pepa misunderstood, shook her nerves and tada "Hurricane". "It looks like rain" was actually an attempt to light her mood up 😭

This video is old, but something that very little people comment about: Abuela was like, 21 or something when Pedro died. And if you pay atention to the villagers in "Dos Oruguitas", immediatly after Pedro dies, even before Abuela gets up from the ground, they are already looking at her for leadership. The lady went from a recently married, mom of three newborns young lady to grieving single mom, widow AND leader of a entry community in twenty minutes or less... That also can't have impacted well on her actitude towards the family/the miracle in general.

I get where your coming from, and your right. But, I think your also missing the significance of Mirabel and Isabella. The magic wasn't going away because Abuela was putting too much pressure on everyone, it was breaking because that pressure was making the family dysfunctional. Isabella and Mirabel's tendency to not get along was one of the largest manifestations of this, due to neither of them being able to show their true selves and appreciate each other for who they are. When Isabella and Mirabel finally understood each other and were getting along, it was almost like the largest step in healing their family, hence the cracks going away. This being said, the issue with Abuela didn't really exist until Abuela started to belt her frustration to Mirabel, in which the dysfunctionality of the family finally reached it's tipping point when it was attacked at its source.

I wouldnt say she's the "villian", her trauma is what blinded her from reality. After all she did see her husband get murdered infront of her while holding her babies. I think that Mirabel is her Abuela's successor--neither of them have powers, but both were sources of the miracle. Abuela's miracle was wrought by grief, pain, tragedy and sacrifice; but she lost sight of what really mattered once she started seeing & judging her family solely on their gifts, rather than as people. Mirabel suffered as well, but the source of her miracle came from her reaching out to her family & truly understanding them as humans who felt restricted by their gifts. The house was rebuilt--as a family & community--with stronger foundations based on love & understanding, rather than magic, which was made possible by Mirabel. So she's the new Abuela, and both of Bruno's visions came true! I feel like Isabella resented Mirabel for being giftless--with those gifts come extra expectations & burdens, right? She probably assumed Mirabel had more freedom & felt less pressure, so she's actually secretly jealous. Anyway, I absolutely love your reaction, and I'm glad I stumbled upon it! Subbed

*About your royal family connection* : you are very much correct. Do mark this: the royal family, in the past, were people who constantly saw war and victories; the sovereign had a court, hands in government, people who literally kneed when they passed by. During this time, the royal family rarely felt the need to express that prefect family image of themselves, because their influence, victories, and hand in social culture was enough to establish their power. But as the world moved toward democracy, the royal family slowly lost their hands in government and influence, literally went from “ruling to simply reigning,” where they have left is glamour, respect, lavishness, and that image and guideline of perfection. There needed to be no cracks, or the family was doomed, gone. This heightened during WWI with the overthrow of their distant relatives in other countries (I.e. the fate of the Romanovs 😬). A great subject on this is the fate of Prince John of the United Kingdom, the youngest child of King George V and Queen Mary. He was autistic and suffered from epilepsy. His family, especially this mother the Queen, loved him dearly and constantly worried for him, but it’s no secret that they tried their best to hide and isolate him, and he would later pass away at the age of 13 in the care of a nanny. You may make that connection with Mirabel. She was the “different” one in being ordinary, and Prince John was the “different” one in being “imperfect” though the love was still there in both cases, and Prince John didn’t have such a good ending. But, indeed, the connection you made indeed goes deeper! And another wonderful reaction! 😊👌🏾💛

For movies like this, villain isn't really present, but what you do have is still an antagonist. Abuela is the antagonist to Mirabel, this doesn't automatically mean that the antagonist is evil, it just means that in the narrative the antagonist is standing in opposition to the protagonist.

Why would the grandmother be the villain? the grandmother represents a displaced single mother, an emigrant who had to raise her family alone for having traumas that marked her and pushed her to protect her family, unfortunately she hurt some in the process, but in the end she understood that only she could keep her family together. I think Mirabel already had a gift or was in fact given a gift and didn't need a door for it - compassion. Every time she sees that someone is scared or is under too much pressure she's there to comfort them immediately. It matches with what someone else said - that she got her door at the end of the movie, and it was the front door.

Personal theory: The candle and Casita are her abuelo Pedro’s spirit watching over them. As soon as he died, his spirit became the magic that protects and provides for them. The house crumbles because his heart breaks for what has happened to the family and he left Mirabel without a gift because he knew that’s what the family needed and that she would one day take her grandmother’s place as the keystone of the family. A gift would’ve prevented her from being neutral to all the rest of the family.

I feel identified with Isabela quite a lot. Like, when I was young my teacher told my parents: people respect your child because of the good grades. Imagine keeping that facet, people putting you on a pedestal, literally saying that you are at another level (even though you ask them not to say that), them thinking you are such a clever person that works so much to have good grades whereas you only have the capacity to learn by heart things quite fast... and the moment you fail to keep that facet ... Oh man the feeling... And your friends, who always say "We all are dumbasses except for her" ... You know, sometimes I would like to be included amongst the dumbasses... When people ask my why I don't like people saying that I am on another level I say that I appreciate the compliment but I am just as anyone else (in my head: PLEASE. STOP. PUTTING. PRESSURE. ON. ME).
@loverrlee

When people put others on a pedestal it sets them up for failure, it outcasts them, even if they are saying it’s a “good thing” you are “special” and “better” it doesn’t feel good to not feel like you belong and are just part of the group. And when those people who were put on a pedestal eventually fail (because they are human) people judge them so much harsher because they “thought you were better” but they never asked to be seen as “better” they just wanted to belong. Being put on a pedestal is still marking someone as “other” and not worthy of being included and seen as innately human. 😢

What is good in this movie is the fact Mirabel is a " Miss everyone " so we can easily find us in her. Personally, I do because I have ASD and my little sisters don't really accept it, and also in Isabela because I'm the big sister and the eldest child is supposed to be an example for the siblings
@AnaReginaNica
@AnaReginaNica Жыл бұрын
Funny how our perceptions about the characters change during this movie. When it started, we all get the "oh, they just excluded Mirabel from the family pic, they are all villains!" vibes... and then we understand the horrible pressure the magical powers puts on this family, with Dolores ("I heard her eye twitching... all night", almost everyone gets the "it must be horrible!" reaction), Luisa (Surface Pressure and her despair about losing her powers and her only way to validate herself - you can see Abuela ignored this fact, but if it happened when she was carrying something, like the donkeys, or a boulder, or the church, she would be instantly killed! It had a very dark conotation, we can understand Mirabel isn't the only one who was suffering from Abuela's cold shoulder) and Pepa (the scene just before We Don't Talk About Bruno is a prime example, when we can see how much she actually hates that cloud over her head wetting her all the time, and all the times Abuela says "Pepa, the cloud!", forcing her to conceal all her emotions - a lot like Elsa -, instead of actually talking to her daughter to see what's stressing her). So, we met Bruno! Bruno was such a plot twist, because we discover he was in that "villain" position exactly because he tried to protect Mirabel from Abuela's very possible wrath (both when he tried to destroy the vision and later tried to take the blame for her). Imagine what she would do to Mirabel if she saw that vision when Mirabel was five... What would she think? And more importantly, what would she do to Mirabel? Then, we can see the whole situation from Isabela's point of view, and we can understand the entire family is prisioner of Abuela's perfectionism, to the point of ruining Isabela's life by forcing her to marry someone she didn't like (and her cousin loved, creating a chasm between them forever), just because Abuela thought he was as perfect as she was forced to pose. And then, we saw Abuela's past, and everything makes sense (like the fact she and Pedro looked exacly like Isabela and Mariano. Yep, she was totally living Isabela's life) inluding what exactly the miracle was and why it broke with Mirabel. It doesn't really heal all wounds, but it's a start, not a complete story.
@laurainathunderstorm
@laurainathunderstorm Жыл бұрын
One thing I don't get is why people think the family excluded Mirabel from the picture, I see it as she excluded herself, they called everyone in for a picture and she didn't move, then she left and the whole situation with the house happened so it's not like they could take another one. I think she just didn't feel as much part of the family as she did later on. But that's just my take, the others definitely could have made more of an effort to make sure she appeared but they didn't flat out exclude her.
@AnaReginaNica
@AnaReginaNica Жыл бұрын
@@laurainathunderstorm Actually, this exclusion factor was something I used from the many reactions of this movie all over youtube. Basically, most people who watch it for the first time see it as rejection from the rest of the family. I personally believe you are right to a point: Mirabel excluded herself, but she was happy for Antonio UNTIL Abuela's speech about how the gift made him special, etc, etc... the same words that constantly trigger Mirabel's trauma, and she heard it too many times that day. So, it was Mirabel self-excluding herself AFTER Abuela's (and the family's) repeated rejection and negligence. Remembering that wasn't the first jab to Mirabel Abuela delivered that day. Mirabel spent the entire day being remembered by Abuela and Isabela why she was unable to help. So, for me it was more like it was the one strand that broke the camel's back.

@AnaReginaNica
@AnaReginaNica Жыл бұрын
@@laurainathunderstorm however, I totally agree with you in the fact Mirabel excludes herself from the family (probably BECAUSE of Abuela's constant reminders, but still), since on the other family's pic (the one in Mirabel's room), we can see clearly the way Luisa traps Mirabel in place to take it. So, it looks like she was trying to get away, but this time, Luisa noticed and acted. The movie actually shows a lot of "hidden" gestures from the rest of the family, trying to reach for Mirabel even against Abuela's influence: It was Luisa's in this case, but we can see it on Felix's decision to talk to her about Bruno (against everyone's, and most important, his wife's -who is his entire world and more- wish), on Julieta's and Augustin's challenge of Abuela's orders, on Pepa trying to enter the falling Casita to save Mirabel alongside her parents... They care about her, and try to compensate for Abuela's ignorance in some way. The thing is, Abuela is actually the only one Mirabel is seeking real validation from. That's why her parents' peep talk didn't work so much on her. It's sad it took Casita's falling and almost killing Mirabel (who was trying to save the candle -the only thing Abuela seemed to care for- ), and Mirabel running away, for Abuela to finally aknowledge and understand the crushing weigh she put on her and the rest of her family.

Mirabel took over the miracle of gifts because she wanted Antonio to be happy and not use his gift for the village but for himself (hence the stuffed tiger). Abuela wished for someone to help her with the village before Mirabel's door ceremony (no gift like Abuela). Bruno got the gift of seeing the future so nothing bad happened, Pepa got the gift to control the weather so no bad storms hit them, Julieta got the gift to heal all injurys, Camilo got the gift to turn into someone so if they needed one more person for something he could do it, Dolores got the gift to hear anything and everything happening in the village, Luisa got the gift to carry anything no matter the weight to help the village, and Isabela got the gift of plants to keep the village flurishing and colorful and lively so no one would leave. Just my observations and opinion

I feel like Abuela is the antagonist but not the villain. Because while she is almost always at odds with Mirabel, she’s not trying to harm her. She’s trying to do the thing that Mirabel is doing which is save the family and keep everything together it’s just she’s doing it in a dysfunctional way. The villain is the colonialism and the intergenerational trauma and how Elders in families of colour never speak about things that have happened to them in the past and instead fester and then trickle down, that’s the villain. Abuela was just more on opposing sides with Mirabel on how to go about things but with the same goal in mind: keeping their family together Also I do think that Isabela/Mirabel hug was important because it set off the final chain of events that led to Casita breaking. Mirabel helping Isabela let go and be who she really is led to Abuela losing her mind when Isabela wasn’t “perfect“ which led to them fighting which led to Casita breaking which led to Mirabel going to the river where Abuela told her story where Mirabel and Abuela realised that there is more to the other and in the end helped the family get closer so it was a necessary event.

@@jaimepe4765 This is a kinda selfish and mean-spirited point of view. You have to understand that individualism is not a bad thing. Sure, it can be taken to a dangerous extreme. But some people unfortunately feel obligated to take care of their abusive or narcissistic parents. What you’re touching on is a culture divide. You might believe that abandoning your abusive grandparents or parents is selfish, but others might disagree greatly. Respect is definitely a factor in these relationships, but phrases like “respect your elders” and “children are meant to be seen not heard” are used to undermine children and make them SUBSERVIENT to their authority figures. Tiktokers, who are probably young people who either undergo abuse under their parents or grandparents or have undergone that, probably don’t like the selfish qualities of Abuela and maybe resent the ending of the film. You have to understand that times are changing. It was customary for children and teens to blindly obey their parents, follow toxic social and gender norms, and take their abuse for the sake of being loyal in the past, but times are slightly different now. Remember, blood is not really thicker than water. You sound a bit like a boomer with the whole “tiktokers and their individualism blah blah blah” rhetoric, and I can assume that you either parent like Abuela or are in family with a member like her. Just because she faced a severely traumatic event doesn’t excuse her actions. And just because she suffers from that kind of trauma doesn’t make her exempt from criticism, no matter if it’s harsh or understanding. Also, don’t you think that some people, especially young people, are tired of seeing movies where the responsibility of taking care of a broken family falls on one of the children? Children and teens aren’t meant to be the saviors of their toxic families. Instead, they’re meant to blossom into maturity and have a sense of pride that will assist them in this cruel world. I honestly think having everything tied neatly by the end really does a disservice to those who constantly struggle with having to live with and take care of Abuelas in their family. It’s like saying “you’re suffering now, but just keep going because she or he’s your parent, and you’re indebted to them”. By the way, for people to “project” onto Abuela, they would have to see something in her character that they already experienced from a family member of theirs.
@lstarsabb
@lstarsabb 2 жыл бұрын
You can be for your family without excluding your own family for being the "black sheep" Abuela was so hard on Mirabel for not having a gift when SHE HERSELF DIDN'T HAVE A GIFT and she basically had her family shun her son because she was scared off losing her home instead of finding a way to solve the problem like Mirabel. She was villian but she was passing toxicity down to her family and deserved to be called out on that SO SHE COULD CHANGE this we have to forgive our elders because when they won't even acknowledge their flaws just because they are our elders just creates more toxic people.

In fantasy stories like this, broken magical artifacts that need to be re-assembled for good or evil are always a huge deal that takes the hero at least hour of real time and months or years of movie time to put together. And here we have someone creating such an artfact and casually destroying it like it was nothing.

Dunno if anyone has ever answered, but the animal that shows up around 14:35 is a Capybara ( also known for being a giant hamster, and being really chill ). You welcome 🤝

Me and mirabel were talking, I am stressed and felt like I was letting everyone down and now I'm loosing my gift, things are heavy. What abuela heard: Mirabel, talk, loosing gift. "Mirabel, what did you do?"
