eGPUs are very popular for MacBooks since they can give a huge boost in graphics performance for everything from gaming, 3D rendering and things like video editing in Final Cut Pro X!
However, in 2020, we now know that Apple is planning to switch to their own ARM-based processors within the next 2 years, so we discuss if Windows 10 in Boot Camp and eGPUs will be supported on the new ARM Macs.
We also show you guys which MacBooks in 2020 are worth it if you're thinking about buying an eGPU.
We tested the MacBook Air, both of the 13" MacBook Pro models, and the 16" MacBook Pro, including the 5600M GPU model to see which MacBooks gain the most from eGPUS.

What about thermals? Should the eGPU's presence to the base MBP16" at least helps to reduce the thermals by using an eGPU instead of the dGPU? I don't change laptops often so every little bit of tips to reducing heat in the laptop chassis to prolong the MBP's life would be highly welcomed.

I have a question. Would I be able to improve speed and performance with two eGPUs connected to my Macbook Pro 8th Gen i5 8GB Ram computer? Also, if two eGPUs were connected Macbook pro 10th gen i5 16GB ram would that improve it more? I am not sure about adding extra eGPUs to my computer. I want to improve speed and performance doing rendering in Blender.

I share the laptop with my wife, so the use case is different for us both. An external GPU would suit me, and I'm glad to see that they perform well with the 13", also glad to see that I don't have to shell out as much as if I were buying the 16" model.

Heads up on the heat and throttling if you are going to be gaming. I argue that the main benefit of egpu is heat management. The amount of throttling when gaming is severe. With egpu the only heat is from the cpu which can be configured to stay below throttle/automatic down clock threshold. I'm talking gaming via bootcamp, video editing, production etc might have other criteria

@@jimspectre Looking to get an eGPU but what do you mean heat management? Do they get hot?
@jimspectre
@jimspectre 3 жыл бұрын
katisu In my opinion, the main benefit with egpu is that the MacBook dgpu doesn’t generate heat, which is the central problem with the 16” MacBooks, because it’s not processing the graphics. MacBooks does Not give you the performance on the specifications due to sub par heat management. My gtx 1080 8gb in a razer core outperform the internal dgpu because it runs consistently whereas dgpu and cpu without a doubt throttles/lower it’s clock to as low as sub 900mhz as soon as it reaches heat limit. I’m talking from the perspective of 16” inch MacBook Pro running games on windows 10 via boot camp. My Mac doesn’t support nvidia via egpu, only Amd cards, but Windows supports both. Bootcampdrivers.com and egpu.io are great recourses in this matter. Take time to read those forums if you feel like making informed decisions, I wish I did before buying the 16” MacBook Pro only to realise that it could only perform what was needed for about four to eight minutes. Egpu for me were a solution to a problem, not part of the original plan. Good luck!
@jimspectre
@jimspectre 3 жыл бұрын
From 6:43- A solution to that round trip, in boot camp at least, is to output the graphics from the egpu directly to external monitor. Would be very nice if egpu could feedback its data through a second tb3 port directly to the built in screen 🤷🏽‍♂️

I was holding on to hope that the next 16" MBP with M1 (x, or whatever it'll be called) will bring back egpu support for this iteration of apple silicone chip, but having seen this, I don't know why they would consider bringing back the egpu support considering they had already gotten to a point (over half a year ago) where an integrated, dedicated gpu was outperforming 5700 xt egpu. Even if they widened support to say Radeon RX 6000 series, I suppose TB3 connection will be the bottleneck anyways.

One suggestion to help make these comparisons and tests even more well rounded - give some game stats or benchmarks under boot camp. You give league and fortnight which is helpful but both run in MacOS. If a consumer is dropping $800 to add games to his Mac, it’s going to be on boot camp. The boot camp drivers for the built in graphics of a 16 in MacBook Pro are probably less optimized, so the comparative results to the egpu could be different.

If you attach a second monitor to the eGPU with the 16 inch or the 13 inch the performance doubles -- according to benchmarks. If you don't have a second monitor just use a headless monitor adapter for 10 bucks it will double the performance, not sure why its happens but it does

I have a 2020 Macbook 13", 16GB - purchased a couple of weeks ago. So far, so good! One thing I've noticed with laptops, in general, is how much the CPU fan ramps up when video conferencing and screen-sharing on Microsoft Teams (and Zoom). I'm purchasing an additional monitor (need one anyway) and was considering getting an eGPU which the monitor would plug into. I am hoping that would help offload the strain from Teams onto the graphics card in the eGPU therefore, less plane-landing sound coming from my poor little Macbook when I'm conducting training sessions over Teams! Do you know whether an eGPU would help offload the strain Teams puts on the CPU? Perhaps consider doing a video about it since it's a bit of a hot topic ATM.

sorry but these conclusions are incomplete. They only apply to Final Cut Pro which is currently not optimized at all for the use of eGPUs. If you take the time to do some tests on DaVinci Resolve the conclusions will be opposite even when comparing the 5600M with the RX5700XT in eGPU configuration. And perhaps you would discover that it is not true that the RX5700XT performs better than the Radeon VII.

This video is specifically for MacBooks. Yes they should be coming, but they may not be a great value since the 5700 XT is already reaching the limits of the eGPU due to the bandwidth of the single Thunderbolt 3 cable. So the new cards might perform better, but for a much higher price, so the 5700XT might still be a much better bang for the buck purchase. -Vadim

Awesome video! Details are on point! One question, can I still get an egpu with the maxed out MacBook Pro 16 with its built in 5600m gpu just to out put 4 displays? (3 monitors and 4K tv) reason for this set up is because I’ll have a lot of things connected to the thunderbolts already and I don’t want the monitors taking to much juice. I use it for music production with lots of usb instrument hardware connected to TB3s with lots of usb hubs and while streaming live with a HD Sony camera also connected to the MacBook. Also if possible trough tweaks on the settings, I’m planning on manually making sure that some softwares automatically don’t use the egpu and instead use the built in gpu, but the egpu only used for the 4 displays. NEED HELP PLEASE. Sorry if I don’t make sense.

On the topic of whether Apple will continue TB3 support on ARM, a few thoughts: - Craig Federighi used a Pro Display XDR for his macOS on ARM demo, which uses TB3. - Apple is likely to introduce USB4 with its new Macs, which is TB3 backwards compatible. - Having USB4 / TB3 support for DisplayPort signals (i.e. Pro Display XDR) doesn't mean eGPU support. That remains to be seen.
@jeverett0902

It's one thing to have DisplayPort over USB support (which even USB C has now). PCIe x4 over USB4, and if ARM will have the I/O bandwidth capability for it, on the other hand, has yet to be seen. It'd be interesting to know the real details of the Pro Display XDR used for the macOS on ARM demo.

I was about to sell and upgrade my 16" with a 5600M but I just couldn't justify the almost 1200dollars I would have to cough up instead of just buying a eGPU solution with a RTX2060 Super for 600USD. So I bought a eGPU and I am happily using it for my gaming adventures on Windows 10 as I don't use my MacBook Pro as a video editing machine. Using Nvidia on Windows is SO plug'n'play, no need for those USB C Port Swapping and custom EFI files shenanigans ...

My 16" MacBook pro could not do an eGPU. I ended up returning the Razer Core because the computer had a kernel panic immediately every time I tried to connect it to the core with an RX580. I ended up just using the built-in 5500M graphics card as it was more than powerful enough for my needs.

What about people that already have an 16' with an i9 5500M becoming hot when plugged into an external monitor? Still doesn't worth it?

you should do a comparison of a 5700 XT vs an Nvidia 2080 in Bootcamp for a 16 inch MacBook pro for 3d work, Cinema 4d, Blender After Effects, DaVinci Resolve, Premiere, gaming, etc

I have a high-end 2020 MacBook Pro and a LG UltraFine 4K (23.7"). Besides the discontinued Black Magic eGPU, is there any way to use a eGPU that will work with my setup (since the LG only has TB3 inputs)?

Hi, you may want to check the new Mantiz Saturn Pro V2 eGPU that has recently been released (and that can be purchased on Amazon US). Looks better than the Razer Core X and with more features (including a dedicated controller for the I/O, more USB ports and a SD card reader), at a lower price. Just though you'd want to test it and see how that performs with the MacBook Pro. Best

Thanks so much for the video! my main question related to the eGpu is: does it provide an input lag? i wanna use it for Warzone (online gaming) and does it send the signal as quickly to the display, as it normally does on your laptop? or is there a delay, since the gpu is not in the laptop and has to travel through wires! thanks anyway!! :)

Can't answer for everything (although I've yet to see a reviewer mention any input lag with eGPUs). What I do know though is if you're using an external display with the EGPU, the display must be plugged in the eGPU itself (unless internal display). That way there is less loss in performance, as video feed doesn't have to travel back to the laptop

did you have an external monitor connected when tested the 16"? i think it's bottlenecked without an external monitor.

Did you do any comparisons between MBP 16 base 6 core cpu and 2020 MPB 13 base and high end models with egpu? Which is a better option for a mix of photo and video editing?

I'm just getting into final cut but my base model 2016 MacBook Pro is painstakingly slow at rendering. Would any of you suggest getting a low end eGPU to hold it down until my skills are good enough to justify a buying a new ~$3k machine?

I used macbook (pro) for working (work station). I used external monitor (bigger screen) to help me more efficient and help my visibility. I learned the mac getting hot than normal usage (macbook screen) due to gpu worked so hard and made my macbook crashed or hang. I assumed M1 (or next apple silicon) will do the same when connected to external monitor. If my assumpation was true then still worth to use egpu for external monitor, since internal gpu is not running for external monitor. Can you suggest me on this matter?

i have a question, does the mac combine its internal gpu with external gpu or does it use one or the other? I have a 2020 27"iMac with 5500XT 8Gb, and should have opted for the 5700XT 16gb, now im stuck. I only use the computer for final cut and motion app.
