Is Any Whisky Worth Waiting In The Freezing Cold For?

Is there any whisky, Single Malt Scotch or otherwise that YOU would spend a night freezing in the cold just to get a chance to buy it? What whisky would motivate you to give up sleep, warmth and money to still only have a chance to purchase? Is there any whisky that's worth it? It might sound crazy but many people will be lining up this weekend for the British Columbia Fall Premium Spirits Release 2023. There are literally hundreds of bottles of Single Malt, Scotch, Bourbon, Irish, Canadian Japanese whiskies amoung others. In this attempt at a breakdown I share some of my thoughts on 2023 whisky pricing and I share the 5 whiskies that just might get me to spend a night in the cold for a chance to bring them home. I'm so glad you did this video, Matt!Thank you sir! For me, it's all about the Shelter Point 12 year old. If I had the money, I'd also snag some of those G&M releases (that Mortlach!! 🤤🤤🤤). The Fettercairn 16 is not badly priced either. If you're into bourbon, those store pick Eagle Rare and 1792 look yummy. Obvs that Stagg Jr is always in mad demand. Bourbon not really not my jam though. The Bunnahabhain's look decently priced. The inaugural isle of Harris bottling would be very interesting. But that's a lot of money for a young whisky. Good luck with snagging that Mr Sam. That thing is rocking horse doo-da and meant to be the nectar of the gods!

No problem James! Happy to get it released just in time lol. That Shelter Point 12 was high on the list. Hope you were able to pick one up! I didn't buy the G&M Mortlach but I did try it and it was pretty solid. Definitely Top 5 in the whiskies I tasted in the store(tried probably 15 of them). I missed out on the Mister Sam and the Stagg, Bourbon fans are next level on these lineup events haha. Was fairly tempted to pick up the Isle of Harris, but it was just too much money this time. Hope you got something good release day James. Cheers 🥃

NO, not for more than one hour! Certainly not overnight. BTW our liquor tax in WA state is 20.5%. I will be shopping at London Heathrow Duty Free next month. Love your Canuck coffee mug!

Washington seriously does have the worst liquor tax out there with 20.5% Your prices are already high as well, so it's like salt in the wound. Hope you get some good finds at Heathrow. Cheers 🥃

I did line up at the spirits release hoping for the Michters 10 and the Stagg. Since I was number two in line, I did get both of my bottles and decided to pick up a bottle of Mister Sam as my store had an allocation of two bottles. Thanks for the recommendation, as this bottle wasn’t on my radar.

Congrats on winning big Mike! I missed out on the Stagg and Mister Sam but I'm hopeful to try them one day. Glad I was able to put that Mister Sam on your radar, that bottle is supposed to be incredibly good. Let me know if/when you open it if it lives up to the reputation! Until next year lineups haha. Great video again Matt. I have the 14.2 Octomore and Yoichi to try at Christmas so really looking forward to trying those for the first time. You mentioned the Twisted Tattoo. That is an absolute stunning dram. One of my all time favourites. Not been able to get hold of it in the UK at a normal price for quite some time now. (Was £65 when released, now need to spend £165+ for a bottle, so can't afford that!) I really hope Highland Park decide to re-release that one in the future.

Thanks Paul! That already sounds like a great Christmas lineup! I have an open bottle of that Twisted Tattoo on my shelf right now. Such an affordable whisky for us right now at £70. Sorry to hear the price got out of control on your side. That did strike me as the best value of the release. Perhaps they'll go back to it one day. Cheers 🥃

I did wind up picking up a bottle of that Shelter Point 12. Watch the Shelter Point website closely. It sounds like they held back a number of bottles to slowly release a dozen or so at a time. The Shelter Point website does ship to Ontario so if you see it available that's your chance! Cheers Richard🥃

Fun idea for a video. Crazy prices and releases discussed. For me, I have recently passed on several "Freeze and Wait" events. However, if you go with friends and make it an event. It's fun! Oh, and BTW I actually passed on Glendronach 21 for $150 CND only 6 years ago. Um .... what was I thinking?????

Really the company of other whisky lovers is what makes an event like this bearable, even fun. That's a crazy one to remember turning down at $150. Who would have guessed it would basically triple in 6 years? I think we all have one or two of these regret stories, but that's a good one. Cheers Jon 🥃

Mentioned on the lock in but I walked away with the Yoichi 10, Shelter Point 12 and Laphroaig Cairdeas. Glad that we both got some great bottles. Cheers Steven 🥃

Cold...lol from Winnipeg! We've seen similar year over year price increases for the annual allocation here in Manitoba. On the one hand, bottles I bought with less restraint in the past I now view as a good investment. On the other, I'm much more picky about what I charge to the credit card. I picked up Laphroaig's 2023 Cairdeas, Green Spot's Quail's Gate release, and a Red Spot. I'm very curious about the Shelter Point 12 you have access to out west!

Yeah you guys in Winnipeg have a whole other level of cold lol. Yeah, depending on what whisky you have bunkered rising prices could be a great thing financially. But I'm definitely on the side where my credit card needs to be given a rest every once and a while. Glad you got some good pickups out in Manitoba! The Shelter Point 12 will have a couple small releases through their online shop, and they do ship across Canada so hopefully you can get it that way if you are looking to pick it up. Cheers David 🥃

foodquig gets to his store on Victoria at 2am every year and is usually first in line. This year there were already too many people waiting and he went to his second choice store where there still several people. He talked to them and they were all bourbon hunters so he did get what he wanted more or less. Cheers

That's astounding! That's ridiculously early. Sorry to hear Quig had a tougher time this year. They tell us not to line up before the store closes but people lined up at 4pm the prior day at the store I wound up at. Missed a few things I wanted but I gotta work my day job haha 😄 I did find similarly that those who lined up early were Bourbon hunters, so the things I most wanted(scotch, Canadian, Japanese) were still there. The only time I queued any length of time was at Ardbeg to get the 2022 rare cask festival release but wouldn’t make a habit of it.

I mean, if there was a time to queue up it would be for the 2022 Rare Cask Feis bottle. I've never had anything from a "first fill Black Sherry Cask" but it sounds delicious. Cheers Sandy 🥃

I still have half a bottle of shelterpoint barrel 4 (I think it was day 2 or 3 of distilling) from when they did single barrel releases. I also loved the 10 year from this summer (could taste the wildfires). I want the 12 but might just drive the hour up the road to get it from the distillery.

I really enjoyed that 10 year from this summer. I had some hit and miss single casks from them but was sold on the 12 year so I picked up a bottle. I did try it in a store too, more refined than the 10 but also a little more subtle. Will be interesting to do a side by side. Glad you're close enough on the Island to stop by, hope you get one at the distillery in the coming weeks. Cheers David 🥃

I pity YOUR gen-x-y-z ! we lined up at 4am in the 80-90s in sub -20C for . . . 16Gb SD memory card , or 25$ DVD player, or a 200 $Coach Bag ... hehe.. . BUT, BUT, our Blair Athol 28y 55.6% cask strength from United Distillers Rare Malt (black box) is only 65 $CA on double-sale (from 190$ then 95$ then 65$ ! !)

Lol, it was nearly enough to chase me away Timothy. The prices were almost unbearable. Especially in light of stories like this 28 year cask strength Blair Athol for $65. Unreal. You know I'd line up for that now in a heart beat. Hindsight is something something I guess. Cheers 🥃

Hi Matt, interesting habit there....not something I'll be going for for sure, but I'm not in your situation (with state shops), so "never say never', right ?...here some people line up like crazy for the latest fashion clothing stuff, shoe or Iphone, whatever & then usually behave like primates to grab something while the fence is going up...at midnight...Of course for whisky it'll be different, we're more civilized aren't we ? (lol), more like people gently queeing before La Maison du Whisky Shop or elsewhere to get the latest release of "this" or "that" hyped stuff, even if I never did it myself really. Now about your choices, I don't know the US/Canadian Bourbon/Rye releases you're talking about but at least one of them seems to get big praise, so I understand this will be one of your go to list...Shelter Point wise, I'll be curious of that 12 yo as I'm curious about their 10 yo...Japanese whiskies wise, considering all the ones I have already, I'm sure a bit frustrated with current prices regarding a lot of them today, especially from new distilleries, but tbh I'm kinda boycotting them at the moment, and to see this new Yoichi 10 yo priced 2 times the bottles I have from the previous 10 yo iteration doesn't push me to buy it, so I hope you won't be disappointed (it is 145 € there & not available anytime). Regarding the Hearach, I paid 85 € here (so it is 127 CAN $ according to my online converter) so 150 seems a bit steep...I haven't opened my bottle yet coz I was sick but I might do it tomorrow after a test with a calibrating bottle, so stay tuned...Hope you'll be catching some good stuff anyway my friend...Looking forward to a future video series with those bottles, Cheers & don't catch cold ! 🥃

No cold was caught, though I was pretty tired by the end. Hope you're over the cold fully by now. While I wasn't 100% successful in my quest in the line it was good fun. It's almost like a miniature whisky festival. I Lined up at midnight and everyone just sets up a chair to keep their place in line and then we all just talk and drink whisky. I brought some Springbank, Arran and Northstar to share with others this year. Around 6am the staff at the store handed out order sheets with numbered tickets in order of the lineup. We indicate on the sheets our choices and they fill up boxes in the order they are received. Then we go in the store at 8am, drink more whisky(they had about 15 of the new bottles open) and then pay for our orders at the front. So it really is very civil and organized. You don't know to be disappointed until you are leaving lol. I tried the Shelter Point 12 and thought it was strong enough to pick it up even though my 10 year is quite recently opened too. The Yoichi 10 price is regrettable and you are justified to be annoyed with Nikka about that. I almost left it behind due to the price but I was going to miss out on a couple bottles I planned to pick up so I went for it. I've got some homework to do now. Cheers Greg 🥃

How'd you get on mate? I got to the Fort St (Victoria) store at 6am and was 50th in line. Managed to nab 2 bottles of the Shelter Point 12 just in time. All 18 they had had gone 5 mins after I got mine 😪 Also managed to get a bottle of the Laphroaig Cairdeas, which was just too tempting to pass up 👍

Those Shelter Point 12's went fast! Glad you got a couple, it's not a big release so it's a bit rarer than the 10 year. I get the temptation with the Cairdeas. I also walked out with the Cairdeas, the Shelter point 12 and the Nikka Yoichi 10 year. That said I also lined up at midnight so really you might have won with the additional 6 hours of sleep haha. It's a good whisky but not worth 300. Try and buy it in overseas markets for half the price if it's a must have. If you are looking for a proper age statement look for Gordon and Macphails special releases.

@silverdale6780 AnCnoc 24 is a great bottle. But in B.C. it will be $345 after tax. I wouldn't buy it at that price and am in agreement with pill(lol). It's $220 regular price in Alberta if you can get it shipped. Often times goes on sale for $190. Cheers Silverdale, good luck on the release! 🥃

The short answer: No. There will always be more (excellent) whisky out there, if you're a whisky drinker (and not a collector). If you are indeed a collector, however, it's probably another story.

I agree with the sentiment largely. An yet, I'm a drinker and I'm still pretty happy with what I was able to grab from the lineup(Shelter Point 12, Yoichi 10 and Laphroaig Cairdeas). Just unfortunate that there isn't a nicer way to get these out here in B.C. Cheers Benny 🥃
