Unboxing and Review: Arduino Alvik - The New Microcontroller Robot
In this video, we unbox and review the new Arduino Alvik, a microcontroller-based robot that costs around 130 euros. We examine its key features such as the laser rangefinder, 18650 battery slot, two 6-volt motors with encoders, array of line-following and color sensors, and the Arduino Nano ESP32 with additional storage. The Alvik also includes multiple connectors, gyroscope, and indicator buttons. Pre-loaded with programs, the robot supports MicroPython, Arduino C, and upcoming block-based programming. The video demonstrates flashing lights using a simple MicroPython program and provides insights on the build quality and design. Lastly, it touches on some minor issues like scuffing on the PCB and USB-C connector usage.

I see this directed at tech interested kids, a (semi-)finished product with lots of options to cheat of the coding that is pre-installed. Room to expand later is built in as well. Also a nice course to go a bit deeper into the coding. I see it as a vehicle (pun intented) to learn more about robotics and coding. If you see the pricepoint it's not for purely the hardware but more for the total concept (robot + site/coding support). A fair price and a great intro into robotic/coding.

Nice robot - and I appreciate your "criticisms". I am not a fan of USB C connections. They are often not very robust to repeated use. Thanks for posting.

Dear Kevin, could you allocate some time to create a two-part video series? The first part would cover a simple STEM Microbit Ghost Spirit Box for entry level students, and the second part would be dedicated to constructing the ultimate high-grade STEM build, "The Kevs Spirit Box Mk I," featuring all the lights, alarms, and whistles that are not available on the retail market in one wicked box. Good question one that I also want to answer myself once I get it tomorrow! The price is actually more than €130 because they didn't mention the tax is not included in the listing price, so add 21%...

How much is OttoDIY out of interest - can that run MicroPython nowadays?

@@kevinmcaleer28 now a day's an original builder kit of the bipedal basic version cost around €80 but that wouldn't be apples with apples comparison since both robots have very different features. On the other hand the new HP Otto is also a wheeled robot that runs on microPython but it is also backwards compatible with Arduino, has similar features and is almost the same price as Alvik.

​@@kevinmcaleer28 Otto DIY as an official kit is EOL and it was only for running Arduino code. The new HP Otto if we want to compare without tax is €123 for the starter builder kit that includes also the 3d printed parts and can also run microPython.

I don't think Alvik is worth 130€. It does have many features for a small package, but the price is just unfair. For just 80 dollars, you can get a robot that both drives faster, has block coding as well, has a camera mounted and is more open, meaning you can modify it easier, and learn more on the way.
