Thank you for looking at this performance. I love this band. As a piano player, my focus has always been on Bobby TImmons, but I really appreciated Art Blakey. I love the times where he's really digging it, and he switches to some very heavy ride symbol that swings so hard. A master of keeping the grove.

So LOVE these reaction videos A Night It n Tunisia is probably one my all time favourite jazz tunes written by Dizzy but developed by the late great Art Blakey and wonderful Messenges I think I've mentioned before I particularly like his bands recorded version I owned it in cassette tape but was stolen from a hotel room in Greece in the early 90s I have since bought a CD so still loving it!!! What I really love about Blakey's playing is his powerhouse style tremendous drive and amazing groove and it proves beyond any doubt considering how many amazingly talented musicians came through The Messengers what a giant of drummers he really was👏🥁☠️

There were so many incredible incarnations of the Jazz Messengers over the years, but the Moanin' line up with Timmons, Merritt, Golson and Morgan remains my absolute favorite. How they played together is just amazing. Of the classic jazz era drummers, Art is my biggest influence. His sense of groove and style are what I always aim for in my playing every time I'm on the bandstand. Thanks Q for the video as always.

Blakey’s phrasing is so musical. His quarter note triplet cymbal bombs always feel so good to play when the groove gets cooking too. 💣 💣 💣

Art Blakey :D I experienced his Jazz Messengers several times live in the 1970s and 1980s in Copenhagen and in the Netherlands. Always an experience. One of the concerts was with the young Winton Marsalis. Cool energy! Benny Golson & Lee Morgan - wow!!!

Thanks for the shoutout and the video. I had to look up the definition of powerful to comment. The first definition I saw was “having control and influence over people and events”. So, by that definition he might be the most powerful of all time. And you almost made me spit my coffee when you yelled out “Allen Iverson!”. FP

Zildjian used to call the ride cymbal a "dance" cymbal, & watching Art Blakey play this cymbal I can see why they called it a dance cymbal. Like a dancer seemingly making contact with the floor only here & there, Blakey seems to let the stick bounce off the cymbal quite a bit & then directs it back to the cymbal. It's as if he's concentrating the energy more above the cymbal than right on top of it. Like the stick return is more important than the stick hitting the cymbal. Thanks Quincey, excellent video!

Hey Quincy from Ned in Spain, I knew you knew it and thank you for the shout out. Back again for another lesson and what a lesson it is. Man, Art Blakey not only lifts that right hand he lifts the bandstand. So powerful and full of joy. One of my goals this year is to really woodshed a whole lot so I' will look into your courses and be back for more videos. Here"s a couple for you in case you don't know them.
