I think he is underappreciated because 1) He is a Leaf and all outside fans don't want to give him to full appreciation he deserves. 2) Leaf fans are holding their breath for playoff success.

nailed it. Specifically reason number 1. The Leafs are so hated outside of the Leafs universe that he'll never get full recognition for his accomplishments; it will forever be met with "talk to me when he wins a cup!" It's similar with Connor McDavid too -- but nowhere near to the point as with Matthews.

Matthews is a rare gem, let down by mngmt. As a leafs fan from Salming days, Burke/dubas eras were a joke but Matthews, though he plays like he came from a hockey program instead of someone who played 1000’s of games in every position, his love talent hardwork selflessness maybe undervalued by media but not by me. Dubas had all these amazing talents and blew it for all of them. Now, dubas has Crosby and blew that, too.

@@shaneroberts3221 You're right, but it doesn't change anything. I've been a leaf fan for over 60 years and loved all those great players since 1967. Matthews is the least productive of all those players in the playoffs. Don't get me wrong, I'm a huge Matthews fan. He has matured a lot this season as a leader. Maybe this is the year he leads them to greater heights in the playoffs. Go Leafs Go!

JD is the most talented person at sportsnet; however, he has a tendency to gaslight swathes of fans in order to make a point or elevate his opinion. Any real leafs hockey fan, regardless of age understands Matthews greatness. I loved watching Sundin and Gilmour and Clark; however, we have never seen anything like Matthews talent (and Marner and Nylander are not that far behind) and this has been obvious from day one of this era. Sorry to burst your bubble JD but most of us “old guys” appreciate Matthews more than you think. Overall good convo with Mirtle tho. Signed older Reply guy.

Matthews is amazing in his own right. You don't score 60+ goals twice in 3 seasons without some supernatural combination of hockey skills and hockey I.Q. and that must be recognized. His abilities as a leader vs. a member of the supporting cast is a different combination, but it cannot be denied that he has stepped up and carried this team at times. I am not sure that someone this superior can lead but if he inspires superior effert, he is doing his part, and then some.

No I don't think he's underappreciated at all man. I think people are just worried about his performance in the playoffs. .. All the leafs need to do is get more players that other teams need to worry about firing the puck in the back of the net. ..more clutch players. Bertuzzi and Domi should help abit. The organization I think under values the backend . Esp the goaltending position. The goalie the the most important position in the playoffs for several reasons.

NO.. we're not the ones trying to make a story out of nothing.. we know how hard it is to win one, 32 teams so the odds are against you and we know this.. ALL fans do. So you saying the fans don't appreciate it is complete nonsense and I would appreciate it if you could stop trying to vilify fans for a story.

Sorry, I know his goal scoring is #1 in the league, but I don't think he is underappreciated. He easily got the MVP a few years ago even though McDavid had a better season and a few others were right there with him. Currently, guys like Pasternak outperform him with points consistently (and in head to head games) - but no one is putting Pasternak ahead of Matthews. Draisatl, Pasternak McKinnon, Kucherov, Makar and McDavid have all over the last 3 seasons or so been as good or better than Matthews - but the general consensus is Matthews is better than all those guys except McDavid. Lack of playoff success also drives valid criticism of Matthews
@MrC37

As a noted Leafs hater, we pick on Matthews because he's 6'3 215 lbs with no bite to his game. He gets rag-dolled by smaller players and when the going gets tough, he folds. He doesn't have that take over style that other players have in the playoffs like McDavid, Draisaitl, Mackinnon, Stamkos, Eichel, Point, Pettersson, Kucherov, and many other. It also doesn't help that Leaf fans are so annoying, if the Leafs win a game, plan the parade, if they lose a game blow it up! Bruh its a random Tuesday game in January

He’s pretty much hated on by the 40 year old virgins over at HF Boards simply because he plays for the Leafs. Doesn’t really matter since Leafs fans would outnumber almost half the NHL fanbases combined, but it’s still funny. Kessel was the same - “overrated” with the Leafs, but when he gets traded he comes a legend? Hyman is another one haters used to say was “overrated”. I just want the Leafs to win a string of cups just to really give the haters an aneurysm. 😂

The reason they don't do that in other markets like Tampa and Florida is because Kucherov and Barkov perform in the playoffs. I don't care how many goals Matthews scores in the regular season if he disappears in the biggest games in the post season. 1 assist in 7 elimination games over his career. Also Ovi played in an era where there were 1 or 2 50 goal scorers in a season, there have been 3 different 60 goal scorers the last 2 seasons 😂 JD is just so out to lunch man how does he have his own show
@Alex-vo2ew
@Alex-vo2ew Ай бұрын
I mean, goals per game is only up .20~ from the years where Ovi was leading the league and still well under the 80s and early 90s. There just wasn't as much top talent in the game 15 years ago as there is now. Most of the guys hitting 50+ in the last few seasons are either McDavid or Matthews or the guys playing with them or Mackinnon/Kutcherov like Drasaitl, Hyman, Rantanen, Brayden Point and then you have the outliers like Pasternak who hit 60 solo which was truly impressive. Besides that it's mostly centralized amongst some of the best players the NHL has seen in decades.

He is underapprexiated, you deliver at the rate he more or less consistently has since he arrived and its become his norm or an expectation that hell perform every season. Where Matthews is under appreciated is how he's changed the sport. Make no mistake, fooling the goaltender, having no tells, being able to disappear has become something every player does because Matthews is so good at it. Never before him did we have a player who did what he does. They way he changes his shot, doesn't let on when he's going to shoot and letting the goaltender think he's going to shoot and passing, Not choking up for power. He's made an art of fooling the goaltender and a ton of players are trying to do the same thing. He's changed the way the sport is played. Other players are copying what he does, while the guy is still in the league. Nobody is talking about that but the guys coaching players working their way to the NHL. I didn't know it was so pervasive until a coach said to me that a major part of what they teach now is fooling the goaltender because of how he does it.
