Avatar is proof that just because a show's target audience is children doesn't mean a show should lack depth or quality.
@nikolauseisler68604 жыл бұрын
i did love avatar as a kid, i probably watched it 3 times while it was playing on nickelodeon. and i do love the memory of it. So i started watching it again (after 8-12 years i guess) and sadly i could not continue after the first 7 episodes because i thought there is NOT enough depth. I cannot point my finger on a specific thing but for me (even though i wasn't able to remember everything) it was all too predictable and too easy somehow... Nevertheless it will always be in good memories in my head :)
@hannahfischer87334 жыл бұрын
@@nikolauseisler6860 Perhaps it seemed predictable simply because the tropes were too familiar to you by then? I'm not going to say the first 7 episodes were amazing, but I think they were important. If I'm being honest, the first season isn't exactly my favorite. I think the most important part was the end of the season. It felt like the battle at the Northern Water Tribe is where the show really found it's footing. Oddly enough, I didn't love the second season when I was a kid, but rewatching it as an adult made me realize how well crafted it truly is. To me it seems that the show gets more intense as the show goes along, because Aang is closer to reaching his goal and every thing feels more real. I don't want to bore you to death with flowery words, but I do strongly suggest trying to watch the whole thing again completely. I think you'll remember why you loved it so much. Ok...but did anyone notice? One of the FIRST successful waterbending moves Katara does in the first episode is freeze those 2 firenation soldiers on Zuko’s ship before they escape. Even though it was clumsy, she found a way to make it work. And the LAST waterbending move she does also involves freezing. She uses it on Azula during the agni kai fight in one of the last few episodes of the show in order help Zuko, but this time the way she uses it is so much more advanced and creative. It was tricky, but she still found a way to make it work. It’s interesting that she decided to freeze her opponent like she did in the first episode, because it shows how far she’s come in the series as a waterbender and I never noticed it before.

Just one of many things that tie together so flawlessly in this series. You're probably all familiar with the soundtrack "The Avatar's Love" which plays during the final 2 minutes of the series... Well it shouldn't come as a surprise that Avatar's Love is a remixed version of 'Safe Return' - the very track used at the end of most of the early episodes in season one, which also had recurring appearances throughout the series. In almost every instance of this simple Kalimba jingle, it's near the end of the episode, it's used as a subtle queue that the episode is drawing to a close, a calming tune signalling that all is safe and it allows the audience to have a relaxing moment at the end just before the credits begin... So of course, this tune is again used at the end of Sozin's Comet, over the course of the series that jingle has formed an unconscious connection with the audience, when you hear it you know without thinking that the episode is about to end, and everyone is safe. A perfect tune to ride out on, - Avatar Aang has safely returned from his battle with the Fire Lord, and with Ozai's defeat, his story has come to a close. It's no wonder that Avatar's Love is one of the most iconic tracks in both series, up there with the main theme and Leaves From The Vine as one of the most recognizable sounds in the entire series.. So much so that even Legend of Korra had a subtle reference to it during it's own closing moments during their Series Finale.

Going off on how this show exemplifies "show, don't tell," is how we first are introduced to the character of Sokka. His opening lines of dialogue genuinely give away what kind of character he is, or for lack of a better term, wants to be. For instance, when the character says 'it's not getting away from me this time. Watch and learn Katara, this is how you catch a fish." I love it. It perfectly establishes his character as being stubborn ("it's not getting away from me this time"), looking to impress an audience ("watch and learn katar") and as being a bit arrogant ("this is how you catch a fish"). These foundations of his character are only expanded upon from here on out. I can't quite remember a children's cartoon that was able to have this kind of characterization right in his first piece of dialogue; because, this foreshadows Sokka's entire arc throughout the series. His arrogant exterior actually covers up a lot of insecurity about his own self-worth that was bread from being the only "man," left in his village when his father and the other men left for war. There is so much more I could about Sokka and the other characters from this opening episode, but then I'm afraid this paragraph will quickly turn into an essay haha. Anyways, great start of a review for a great series! I look forward to the next part.

Pheonmal Video. Despite seeing a lot of analysis and vids on Avatar,the things you pointed out to me were still new and fresh which goes to show both the talent of you and the staff behind Avatar. Avatar is one of my favorite shows. I hate how a lot of shows feel the need to be unnecessarily edgy or mature for older audiences. Avatar strikes a perfectly balance,ironically as one of the themes of the entire shows is balance as you pointed out. You have serious if not heartbreaking scenes and episodes like Zuko Alone,The Southern Raiders,The End of Bitter Work,etc. However,you also have Sokka calling a assassin "Sparky Sparky Boom Man" and other such lighthearted whimsical occurrences. I am really curious to see your opinion on the rest of Season 1. While I like Season 1,it definitely felt like the writers were getting there footing for the most part on what they wanted for the show. They did find it on quite a few instances such as the Storm,The Season Opener,The Siege of the North,etc but then they lost it with such things as "The Great Divide". I would rate Season 1 Avatar as a good show with some great episodes,and Seasons 2 and 3 as a amazing show with a once in a blue moon dud.
@Lowart5 жыл бұрын
Thanks! I'm happy to hear that I brought something to the table that you hadn't heard before, as part of the challenge here is not just regurgitating the wealth of points others have made about the show. So I'm really glad that you let me know that :) I see what you mean about the mature aspect. To me, Avatar is almost always without pretense, and is happy to let its characters speak for themselves and to let the audience explore the themes and their weight on their own terms. Yeah, I think season 1 is probably the most rocky of all the seasons (at least if my memory serves me well), so I'm curious to see what I feel as I continue.

One of the things I appreciated about your Teen Titans series was your lack of hesitation towards criticizing the show. I found it refreshing to see someone take a serious, critical look at the show beyond any sort of nostalgia or fear of backlash. I hope you're able to continue that going into this as well. AtLA is one of my favorite shows, and I've been outspoken about really appreciating the first episode. However, I personally thought the second episode ended up being a little off tonally. I felt it took a step too far into the realm of comedy, and ended up underplaying potential dramatic beats(specifically in reference to Aang vs Zuko). As for some of your specific points... -I would've liked you to go further into the idea that Sokka, Katara, and Zuko represent the world's perspective on the Avatar. Like, pointing to a group of people who feel the Avatar is more dangerous than helpful, as you say Sokka represents. -"There's room for interpretation, which generally makes us feel closer to the characters and more invested in them. As we're able to guess, just like a person in real life, of their intentions, wants, needs, and motivations". I'm a bit unclear on how this idea works, or if I'm maybe misinterpreting what you mean. While I can see an argument for a mysterious character to be appealing, "closer" wouldn't be the word I use to describe it. I find myself feeling "closer" to characters the more I learn about them, not the opposite. -There are a couple points in the video where you allude to lesser shows employing certain narrative techniques that you don't see in Avatar. Stuff like an inner monologue. Without some type of example, these sort of feel like baseless complaints used to elevate AtLA to a point it may not necessarily deserve. Show don't tell is a fairly known principle that I'd imagine finding in most competent stories, not just great ones. Not to mention the fact that the previously mentioned exposition dump at the beginning of this episode kinda contradicts your praise. All in all, I'm looking forward to this series. I think AtLA is a genuinely great show. But I also feel that fans tend to hyperbolize exactly what is worth praising, and just regard every single frame as literal perfection. Which is something, I think, to be avoided.
@Lowart5 жыл бұрын
Yeah, it definitely won't just be glowing praise throughout the whole series. I have some pretty big issues with the series, despite still finding in fantastic :) In fact, I have a whole section carved out to talk about the various comedic missteps, but it's still definitely good that you mentioned it here. Either the next part or part 3 (depending on how much I cover) is going to have a decent amount of negativity haha

To respond to your second point, I think what Lowart is saying isn't that not knowing about a character makes him feel closer to them. I think what he is saying is that because we arent being spoon fed information through verbal exposition and instead are being shown through things like body language and/or dialogue that isnt on the nose hand holding, we get to understand these characters through context clues like we do in real life. In real life people often dont just tell you directly what they think of everything they've ever thought about when you first meet them. Usually either to be polite or to be cautious or for any number of reasons, people are somewhat reserved versions of themselves and you grow to understand them through little things we observe them doing that help us put a profile together. In real life you gotta do a little detective work but it doesnt feel like work because it is natural interaction. Many shows dont trust their audience to be intelligent and instead remove that natural feeling of learning about characters through moments of watching their actions, deciding instead to tell us things directly in a way that hinders the feeling of building a relationship with the characters as if we're in the world.

Goodness, I am rewatching the show now because of your series... the last time I watched it was when it first aired, so when I was a kid. And good lord, my perspective has changed. I loved the show then, and still love it now... But I always used to think Katara was the voice of reason; or at least, that's what I remembered. Rewatching it now... she always seems much more unreasonable to me than Sokka. Of course, they make Sokka out to be the clown, but more often than not he's the one who is right and she is the one who is wrong. You're right when you mentioned that Katara is hopeful and that is nice, and you also talked about how they justified Sokka's concerns... But watching it now (started after I watched this video), I didn't realize how much my experience would differ! I get the creators' choice of making him goofy for the sake of the kid perspective (honestly, really cool and smart choice, as kids are less likely to relate to him vs. Katara)... But I feel so bad for him!!! He's almost always right, and I almost always agree with him every time. Katara seems very immature, even if her flexibility and empathy is better. So fun to see this change in my interpretation of the show... Wouldn't have happened without you! I look forward to your future videos!!

Idk why, but the "and who can blame him?" at 5:33 made me laugh. It was like that one otter-penguin was commiserating with Aang. Great video, btw, looking forward to the rest! :) Any and all conversations about ATLA make my heart happy, and I love your insights.

Interesting how you made a review of Teen Titans and are following up with Avatar the Last Airbender. Teen Titans was my favourite show but then it was surpassed by Avatar the Last Airbender. I don't watch many shows so it's interesting how you're catering to my interest. I also like the way you analyze things because you aren't too harsh nor are you too tolerant of flaws.

I just finished my third full watch through of the show (I revisit it every few years) and still think it’s fantastic. Probably my favorite show of any kind. I’m well into middle age and I’m looking forward to introducing this show to my nieces and nephew when they are a bit older. For me it’s the perfect balance of fantasy action, drama, silliness, and character study that’s told in a way that’s fun, educational for younger viewers, and genuine. This “cartoon” has fully realized character arcs (even Appa gets an episode to himself) and builds upon itself in each episode and from season to season. Most “adult” live action shows fail at that way more often than not. When people write it off as “just a cartoon” I point out that most cartoons don’t tackle issues like PTSD, war, genocide, parents dealing with the death of a child, critical thinking, sexism, racism, authoritarianism, refugee crisis, platonic and romantic relationships, etc. Uncle Iroh is definitely my favorite character but what I found interesting on this watch through was realizing how important Ozai’s entire family is to the show even though (even in title) its main character is Aang. Aang’s story certainly is compelling and well told but I find Zuko’s redemption from the mental abuse him, his sister, and mother were put through by Fire Lords Ozai and Azulon the most satisfying; along with the tragedy of Azula’s opposite track which leads to failure and a mental breakdown. It really gives the show added weight and connection to the characters that I felt TLOK was lacking (among other issues.) I really enjoyed your thoughts in this first video and will definitely be checking out the rest you post 👍

I remember catching the beginning of avatar with Katara and Sokka on the canoe and being a bit skeptical of this new show. But by the end I was completely hooked, it is like you said one of the best and most effective introductions to a series. Even more impressive considering how vast and layered the world is in Avatar.

This is a thoroughly enjoyable recap and analysis of the series. The only thing I don't care for is the added memetic captions to a lot of the scenes. They're distracting from your message, and I have to actively ignore them to focus on what you're saying, else I lose your thread as my mind focuses on trying to decipher the captions quickly enough to catch them before they're gone.

This is pretty cool. How do you think the new premier feature turned out? And honestly, despite you just starting the series, my initial thoughts is that yes it is as great as I remember. And that's just from my recollection of rewatching it last year. I think I've rewatched ATLA at least ten times.
@Lowart5 жыл бұрын
I think it's an interesting feature, but that it would be best to use to have about an hour before the video goes live to chat with people; that way it wouldn't hang around in people's sub boxes bothering them.
@Step430995 жыл бұрын
I'm gonna rewatch it soon but i do remember some episodes i didn't really care for like the Northern Air Temple

To each their own. I remember people complaining about The Great Divide, and I didn't think it was a bad episode compared to everyone else.
@Step430995 жыл бұрын
Meteaura22 Don’t get me wrong these episodes aren’t bad and they usually have something to say in them but compared to the obviously greater episodes or even the more in between episodes they aren’t really as enjoyable
@Meteaura225 жыл бұрын
Heh of course, it only makes sense that as an ever improving series, the later episodes will be more enjoyable than the earlier ones. I assume that's how successful television series works.

Great video! The first time I watched the show at the age of 13 I don't think I realized just how good this show is. Luckly I rewatched it like 80 times since then. I look at tv shows for kids today, non of them deliver the same energy nor delivers messages about things like war and war politics, racism (in its own beautiful way), diplomacy, sacrifices and "means to an end", self improvement and self discipline, religion (Buddhist and Hindu groups mainly) and I can keep going... And it's so beautifully animated and character development are genious as you said. Anyway, can't wait for the rest of the vids and glad I can see my name on the list at the end!

@midknightmiddleman58874 жыл бұрын
I remember when it first came out. I was skeptical, so I immediately dismissed it as potentially bad. But then one day for some reason I decided to watch it. The first episode I ever saw was episode 3, the “Southern Air temple”. I was super impressed with Zuko (he became my favorite character). Then I watched the next episode “The Warriors of Kyoshi.” I loved it. This was all in 2005. For some reason I couldn’t watch every episode. I only caught glimpses of a few, but I did see a good majority. Book 2 was incredible, and I couldn’t believe the way it ended. I never got to see Book 3 because it was such a long wait, that I practically thought they were showing new episodes at like 3am or something. It was only about a year in which I saw the entire series, all seasons. And I gotta say, I wish I were back in the early 2000s. It was a perfect era for a childhood. The best, both the time period and this show. I just hope the Netflix adaptation is as good 😅 🌊 ☄️ 🔥 💨
