ATLA, Avatar: The Last Airbender, Avatar: The Legend of Aang--whatever you want to call it, it's a great show. Today I discuss the third and fourth episodes of that show. After this, I'll most likely pick up the pace though. But I hope enjoy this one :)

Ok, yes Zuko is literally one of the greatest characters in the history of media. But I feel like because of this, people can sometimes underrate Aang as a character, and the things he goes through. I honestly do think that ATLA is equally about Aang and Zuko. Zuko isn't the 'true main character'. They're equals in the show.

I find it hard to say that katara/sokka/toph are just side characters. They all have big nuance. Though sokka is inconsistent at times. He is the brilliant strategist while being there comical idiot.

Iroh is like a very good support character. He doesnt need any developement. He is a mentor figure, a nuanced one. And Sokka is just a great character that he could have had equal developement to Zuko and Aang onscreen. So good that he is in the dragonprince and voltron.

I think Sokka poking Zuko should have been taken as more a jokey manner. Kind of a “this is for before” moment. But I believe when Zuko poked Sokka, it should have been more serious. To me, it felt like it undermined the fact that Sokka was actually trying his best against the Fire Nation force.

one thing that's made me look at "the warriors of kyoshi" in a new light is thinking about the last time aang had a group react to him being the avatar. the southern water tribe village didn't get much time to react to him being the avatar, rather than an airbender, however, at the southern air temple, aang was shunned by the other kids because of his newform status, so of course all the positive attention he receives from other kids/girls his age because of him being the avatar is going to go to his head a bit. it doesn't fix your issues with the episode, obviously, which is fine, but i do think it's a bit of an interesting level to look at the episode from, in terms of providing more depth to aang and katara's plotpoint, which as you said, is mostly light througout 1x04

There's this episode in the big bang theory where that one guy is called out for his sexism. Instead of thinking about I and apologizing he sulks and the girl apologizes to him. In the end nothing changes. How is it, that a show for children is so much more mature than one for adults? 😔 During the episode with the kiyoshi warriors I was so happy when sokka wholeheartedly and honestly apologized. He started his journey on becoming my favourite character there 😊

Lowart I feel as though, after watching most of your FMA series as well as this, that your emphasis on seriousness might be detracting your ability to either see the purpose in or enjoy the comedy in what you watch. Not that you have to agree with it, just that of you are seeing it you sure aren't addressing it. Much like in fma mangahood and hxh 2011, avatar TLA starts off quite goofy and fun and gradually becomes more serious over time. And each in their own way. Episode 4 highlights Aang's childish way of dealing with his responsibility by turning a serious journey in search of teachers into a fun filled adventure. Effectively, he's ignoring it and trying not to think about it. I agree that there wasn't enough development for Suki or her relationship with Sokka. And as far as the making fun of the dress bit I think that is to say that you can be embarrassed by a uniform's sillyness while taking pride in what it represents. To better point out my feelings on contrasting humor with the seriousness of the situation or certain developments (emotional developments, character developments,or otherwise) I'll bring up hxh's hunter exam arc. While surrounded by death and being threatened by it at every turn there is a consistent sense of humor throughout. And at no point does it feel like the danger isn't real for them. Certainly lessened, but only really for those not paying attention. In reality what this serves to do is hint at later darkness. These contrasts are important as they allow for foreshadowing and a greater intensity in the moments when it changes. Without Puck, a small fairy (techically elf), to add humor you would not feel the poignancy of the depravity in Berserk. This is quite prominent in the early part of the manga of FMA. When it feels mostly like an adventure shonen only to hit you with Nina or Hughs. It turns something that hurts into a gut punch. Essentially, the jokes DO have a purpose beyond just making you laugh. Though I think one of the scenes where Aang is being a goof for attention could have been spent showing Sokka and Suki hanging out while not training. Thus showing their development. Even though I disagree with some of your thoughts I like most of what you have to say. Love your work. Keep it up.

I agree, he does tend to be very stern in that characters need to be serious in order to have character development and push forward the story. I don't want to say its goofy just because its a kids show, but essentially that is what the first season is oozing with. Kataras and Aangs conflict were more about how Aang let the good side of being the Avatar get to his head while ignoring the serious responsibilities. It also will help build their romantic interests later in the show by explaining why Katara was a bit jealous. I do agree that the contrast of happy to sad is a very subtle twist and a great way to show a shift in tension and character perspectives. I think ATLA had a reason for every episode and even the most hated, The Great Divide, had information that was not 'essential' to the plot, but very helpful to character development (which is arguably almost just as important). It's all a matter of perspective, it's all whether we see and or agree with how the underlying themes were portrayed, but as he said in this video it is all subjective.

Maybe I'm thinking too deeply about this, but I like the quick romatic developments in Avatar. Without fail such kinds of developments all involved either Sokka or Zuko. Young man of fighting age and with fighting skill, born in a world of conflict, that has not known peace since their great grandparents…….. People like that don't tend to have a long life expectancy. Sukki was a warrior, she knows what war is. Sokka likely was one of the few male warriors her age she has ever met, and she liked him. So why shouldn't she kiss him? After all, there's a real possibility either or both of them would die that day, or if not then, maybe the day after. Yue made perfect sense to me aswell. Sokka was probably the first guy her age that didn't treat her as just a princess. And he was funny and charming in his own way. Then the threat of the fire nation comes to their door. Life becomes uncertain, and bigger romantic risks are taken.

Yeah that's what I was gonna say too. They're kids (and so more impulsive), they're warriors, and he's a traveler not local. So there's six different ways he (or she) could be gone tomorrow. Slow burn friends to lovers isn't an option here, she's gotta jump that cheek while it's there if she wants to stake a claim, and I always thought it was bold and refreshing of her to be like "just so we're clear, I like you and not as a friend". The relationship progress is all on his end, by proving he's not an unredeemable asshole, and once he's done that, she's got no more time to waste.

Great vid man. Southern Air Temple is one of my absolute favorites of book one. It subtly but strongly conveys a lot of the themes we see throughout the show from Aang and Zuko. IMO, one of the overlooked episodes of the season. Also love the quote from Katara that helps calm Aang out of the Avatar State: "Aang, I know you're upset. And I know how hard it is to lose the people you love. I went through the same thing when I lost my mom. Monk Gyatso and the other airbenders may be gone, but you still have a family. Sokka and I, we're your family now." It really speaks to Katara's character overall, as well as the family dynamic the gang shows throughout the series. It's demonstrated early and often.

I mentioned this in my comment on your last video, so I won't go into too much here, but that kiss shows one of my biggest problems with avatar; the lack of development for its romantic relationships. This is one of the aspects I think truly was designed just for children, and doesn't reach all ages like many other things in the show do. Also, I'm glad that you're doing two episodes per video! Suki in the first season was originally meant to be a one time character and not planned to return in the later seasons, so she was written as such. However, due to fan popularity, she returned in later seasons. The underdevelopment came because the writers did not intend for her to return.

One thing about the stick poking scene with Zuko i took it as something interesting but i don't know if I'm just looking too deep into it Zuko clearly has the physical and bending capabilities to defeat Sokka and seriously hurt people, but he chooses not to. When a "warrior" of a foreign land charges at him, he chooses to disarm (and mildly humiliate) him instead. That could be an early subtle hint about his character, the part that doesn't want to hurt anyone he doesn't have to, especially if he can avoid it.

I agree with all the parallelism you mentioned about Aang and Zuko, but on the bonus disk for ATLA Book 3, Michael Dante DiMartino and Bryan Konietzko stated that they think of Katara as the deuteragonist of the series, as well as the "person the story is being told through".

For me Katara is one of the biggest mistakes in Avatar. She is the way of telling "moral truth" in early episodes and these are rushed by limited screentime. Later she became the most skilled bender in the group, the most intelligent character in the Aang's team and in general one to find the way out of any trouble. After short training she defeats Zuko twice. She is just too perfect. I have no problem with her being the leader and powerful, strong character. The problem I have is that she becomes powerful and skilled in such short time. Too many times I and my sister thought that she is winning a fight not because her training and skills got through the plot, but because writers needed somebody to defeat enemy and they weren't sure does the viewer noticed how strong Katara is.

@@gameboyterrorysta6307 Toph since her introduction was the strongest character. Katara is consistently shown to be about on par with Aang as a water bender and she is more dedicated to training than he is. Sokka is clearly shown to be the better strategist literally leading armies into battle. Katara is NOT the moral center. That's Aang. Even with his failings. I mean she tortured someone with blood bending and nearly murders a defenseless, old man. Christ. Most of her wins against Zuko are when he's already physically weakened, as in the north pole, and... Wait. Does she ever actually beat him any other time? Without the aid of anyone else?

I like to think of ep.4 as kind of a breather episode. Ep. 1, 2, and 3 leaned a little more on the serious side, interspersed with comedy. Ep.4 kind of serves to set the style of the comedy for the rest of the series. As far as Suki and Sokka, I actually think it was handled pretty well. People who encounter dangerous situations or combat frequently tend to live a little harder and faster than peaceful civilians. Speaking from personal experience, exposure to a lot of violence ages a person quickly, and a person becomes quicker to push the envelope on certain things. Suki's peck on the cheek is flirtatious rather than anything more serious, and I do think it was more a "moral of the story" moment, namely that girls can do anything boys can.(As an aside, there's also a pretty even mix of Male/Female antagonists going after the Gaang.) Within the context of the whole series, or at least the first season, ep.4 achieves what it set out to do, and was entertaining if nothing else. If nothing else, at least its no "Great Divide."

The images were very good and focused on what he was speaking about. I wouldn't try to voice video clips in when the image can give the message well. I would say a clip for when Zuko chose not to injure Zhao I think his name was would of been good.

I love that you are willing to actually, unapologetically, critique Avatar. So much ATLA analyses either exclusively praise it through the roof, or make a million disclaimers about how they still love the almost-perfection of ATLA despite making their tiny, tiny criticism. I love ATLA, and I'm glad to find someone pointing out things that weren't perfect, and who has original things to say.

As much as I enjoy Avatar, I totally agree that having humor undercut serious development can often take me out of a story, its sort of one of the primary reasons I prefer F.M.A 2003 over F.M.A Brotherhood, because the humor didn't clash with the serious moments of the story as often.

Just a note on your idea of developing the relationship between Sokka and Tsuki. The Warriors of Kyoshi were not originally meant to return. They became recurring characters because of popular opinion among fans and the writing staff.

just got to point out something that I don't think i've ever seen mentioned by reviews of ATLA which I find weird. I'll also preface it by saying that I consider ATLA a masterpiece, one of my favourite tv shows of all time in fact. the thing in question is the massive inconsistencies in artstyle from episode to episode when switching between the show's two studios. For those not in the know, the animation of ATLA was rotated episode by episode between two studios, JM Animation, a Korean studio that would later partially reform into Studio Mir (responsible for Legend of Korra and Voltron Legendary Defender) and DR Movie a japanese studio known more for doing supplementary work to support larger studios such as Pierrot and Madhouse) While DR movie do an excellent job with action sequences throughout the series, such as Zuko's Agni Kai with Zhao, The Blue Spirit episode, and the battle with the Drill at Ba Sing Se's walls. their ability to draw the characters outside of the action is somewhat more... suspect... with eyes that sometimes shift towards bug like, odd jaw structure, less detail on facial features such as the nose and brow, no shoulder structure to speak of. and a general lack of attention paid to staying on model. look at the difference between Sokka and Katara's faces at 2:21 (a screenshot taken from the first episode produced by JM Animation) and their faces at 2:39 and 2:42 this wouldn't be that bad by itself, but it's part of a a larger problem, while that screenshot of JM can be used as a good example of how JM generally draws these characters, the two DR Movie screenshots absolutely cannot... the characters faces morph in composition quite drastically, sometimes looking like a completely different face in subsequent shots., 4:18 is a great example. is it just me, or does that look more like Katara's face drawn on Aang? all in all, it's something of a distraction, nowhere near enough to spoil the series, but definitely enough to remark upon. maybe I just notice it more because I vastly prefer JM's artstyle to any of DR's... 57 or so of them.

You know though I do appreciate your analysis of ang and katara in ep. 4 I tend to think that there is a bit of a, chosen one/being famous inflating the head, and seeing, how literally, trying to keep that almost bragging nature to either keep or inflate the head more leads to disaster, and katara representing a family member watching this occur, and in the end saving Ang from his over bloated ego with her own skill and humility. As with pacing and ur issue with humor, I can see where this is coming from, but in my opinion some humor to lighten a very serious mood does wonders to keep the viewer attracted instead of either 1 getting bored or 2 just getting overloaded with a too serious outlook: a perfect example is during ep. 2 with those funny sound effects 1st when the tribes lone warrior gets his but kicked, and now the entirety of a people is exposed, then ang showing up and trips Zuko, and then at the end when Soka does the same thing to Zuko, can say that he's a quick learner and is a point of great fun to break up the action/The Avatar state powers. If you want to see another example watch Gravity Falls episode "The bunker" and Sues's reaction after the main character witness a reaction of his own death. He'll Gravity falls is pretty much the epitome of at least of this technique done very well to lighten some downright horrible and terrifying things in a wierd world.

I liked how they brushed off such a serious moment only because I feel like that's how it is in real life. You learn about yourself and you accept yourself, quite commonly right away you'll be expected to laugh it off. Sokka is a sort of ambassador for real life and reasoning throughout the series albeit in a comedic way. I thought it was fitting and charming to have the short arc end that way. That's just my opinion though :3 I also understand why it would be annoying. I'm only trying to point it out because like, IF I HAD A DOLLAR FOR every time I HAD A REALLY DEFINING MOMENT AND SOMEONE RUINED IT TO POKE FUN... I'd have enough money to afford the therapy that would have prevented me from writing that last bit in all caps tbh aha.

Aang and Katara are still young, so I think it makes sense that they would have this falling out. We already know Aang likes Katara, but as a young boy, he likes the attention from other girls, too. She was also preoccupied in the beginning, so he turns his attention elsewhere And I think the moment Aang saying "nice dress" shows that Sokka's self-consciousness will take a while to be subverted. Sukie's empowering words beforehand were nice, but there will be people who make fun of you for doing things that are "out of the norm"; whether it's loved ones just teasing you or people who are genuinely disgusted. And that does hurt one's feelings; and that's okay But I do still agree that sometimes, this show's humor can undercut other stuff; another example of Book One being more rough around the edges. But boy do they step it up in Book Two!

What always seemed off was why it took this long for Aang's presence to be noticed by the world. He was using the Avatar State a bit before, but no one noticed it then. There doesn't seem to be particularly any explanation for this.

My thoughts on the scene when Saka is in the warriors garb then anag tells him "nice dress". I feel its a moment of Karma, He was looking down on the warriors in that same way, only to accept they are valid fighters and stronger than him, only in the moment to get a small taste of how it feels, even if it was only in jest, i feel it adds to the moment with a "what goes around comes around"

You called Suki decent important while she made sure Sokka and the other could get out of prison and she saved his and Toph's life in the end. Agree about the underdeveloped thing though and quite much everything else. I think the humor centered scene I dislike the most is when Toph searches with Zuko for Aang, while he is with the lion turtle, and Toph talks to him about her complicated childhood and Zuko just roughly brushes her off. That scene could have made a lot better, getting some bonding over their lives as Rich and (to different degrees) isolated children that did not get enough love from their parents and were undermined by them. Both of them also had great potential that was tried to be taken away by their parents. When I'm talking about parents, of course I don't include Ursa. We don't see Toph opening up that much and easily throughout the show, she really must have felt safe to tell him all that and it must have been really awful for her that he just didn't give a damn

I think the part where aang says "nice dress" is not only meant to be comedic but it is also a way to show saka how much he needs to grow (yes he is wearing the warriors uniform but he is embarrassed at the closest sign of mockery which goes against the pride of wearing it) he is still a man who considers any thing feminine as a negative

One of my favorite book series The Young Samurai, specifically book 4 has our MC taken in by a shinobi village and taught partially by a female warrior. I really wish the introduction of Suki and her role was more like the female character in that book series, cause it's one of my few gripes with TLA.

Super loving the series so far! Yeah, Episode 4 suffers a little bit when it comes to tone, though at least with Aang a certain amount of levity does fit with his general approach to life and conflict. I too was wishing that less time was spent on the Aang/Katara conflict, or for that time to have been given a stronger arc. I always prefer characters demonstrating what they have learned and how they have changed rather than just apologizing. Also, the animation is... not my cup of tea in many spots.

Could anyone tell me if Aang used the tail of his glider as a combat tool BEFORE Keoshi Island? If not that's VERY interesting to me because it suggests that he immediately picked up on how useful a fan can be with air bending while using Keoshis fans - and that that part of the story kind of gets over-looked o-o

Comedy and character building can be mixed and to me, Avatar is the best at it. This is a kids show after all and the comment "Nice dress", does establish a connection with Soaka and Anag. It's something that doesn't really happen a lot in the series. Both characters do end up with good finish, but it feels like they should've had more time to build a friend ship.
