everyone talks about cosmic, and mattel, but this song right here sold me on the album honestly. even now i go back to it constantly because it somehow scratches every itch, m shadows’ amazing voice, crazy guitar and drum tracks, and the unshakeable SOAD vibe this song gives off. what a fucking way to start an album man, it set the bar high and i feel most of the songs hit that bar solidly

Matt's voice has always been great, but now it's *great*. The man hit a high at Rockville that rivaled Axl Rose in his prime.

See this kind of opinion always boggles my mind because I had a realization that in itself is a bit of a hot take. Matt does not have nearly the best voice out there. His voice isn't even great in my opinion. What separates him though is that even though he doesn't have the best voice, he has immense singing talent. He knows how to work a voice, and that's what makes him *great*.
@xerodelacroix5552
@xerodelacroix5552 Жыл бұрын
@@HELLHOUNDGRIM That's exactly what I meant. He has always had a good amount of control, but now he's genuinely singing everything better than he was when he was in his 20's. Even his screams are better now, probably because he lets Johnny take a lot of them live to preserve his singing voice, but those old songs hit harder now.
@traindiesel7005
@traindiesel7005 Жыл бұрын
@HELLHOUNDGRIM see, this is the problem with hot takes. with all due respect what the fuck are you talking about? man has incredible range, can scream and nails this shit live. if you don't like his tone or whatever, that's fine you're free to do so. but that other condescending back handed shit about him knowing 'how to work his voice'... you mean hit notes that are in the song? that's called singing.
@fVNzO

@@HELLHOUNDGRIM He really was one of the all time greats imo around the nightmare era. His singing was phenomenal and he is still quite good live. He does what i wished JL did in DT. Just stick to your range and don't try to do anything your body doesn't want to do. So instead of straining himself at the edge of his ability sounding like shit, he sounds fucking great in a way that fits the music perfectly.

Matt is by far one of the greatest metal vocalists. Just spend 20 minutes listening to live performances in his early days, (2006-2014). He has a very powerful, distinct, and energetic voice along with insane control. It’s like no wonder chicks fall for this dude when listening to LBC, just saying 😂 And he’s still got it now, can’t scream as much as he used to obviously cause vocal injuries and such… but he still sounds awesome 🤙🏼

I think the most difficult part about people liking his vocals, even before his voice got damaged, and got surgery for it. M. Shadows will change his voice around on purpose depending which style they are going towards on certain songs. City of Evil was definitely different for him during that time. But I would say everything after the white album, his vocals became more clearer. But now with the stage and life is but a dream, it seems like after his voice was damage a few years ago now you can clearly hear the difference, even if he does change his voice often for the certain songs now. He sadly Will never be the same again, that being said I do love his voice because he absolutely nails it on certain songs. But there are other times where I actually can’t tell if he is changing it on purpose for it or it is because of the damage vocals?? it’s all a challenge at this point. 🎶
@JustennWolfe
@JustennWolfe Жыл бұрын
I do not believe his voice was damaged until way after the stage. It was at least 2 years after its release before he started to sound off and cancel shows. I think he could sing like he did in the past again if he wants, but it obviously would cause his voice to get injured again. The way he is singing now is healthier for the longevity of his career.

This song is supposed to resemble being born and then waking up into complete chaos as anxiety and panic takes shape leaving disoriented from all the fast paced lyrics in the verses. Fed up,the narrator chooses to take his own life ending his contribution to his family. “Adieu,I never had the will anyway.” “Toss the rope over the branch and fall into the night, and here I swing from my family tree;say good night…” Brilliant

He absolutely is... I will ALWAYS stand by this. As much as I may criticize some of his stylistic choices (particularly around City of Evil), to maintain the level of consistency that he has live through intense touring, to have such an incredible dynamic range of tones and pitches, to be able to project his voice as loudly as he does, and to have SO MUCH character within his delivery, and an incredibly distinct timbre.. he's genuinely one of the best to ever do it as far as I'm concerned.

I love how polarizing this album is. It's separating the fans of metal to 2 camps. 1 camp is us, the ones who notice art at its truest form. We listen to music with the perspective of the artist and try to understand what they are doing instead of listening with our own bias. Camp 2 is the people who only like bands with less than 30,000 listeners on spofity. The bands no one has ever heard of, with pitch perfect production and mixing. The cleanest of clean. Nothing wrong with that music btw, it's just not the ONLY style of music. These are the people with 0 musical theory knowledge and don't play an instrument. They love to hate on the big bands. A7X has made a true masterpiece here. The more I listen to the album. The more I love it. The bands evolution is really amazing. HTTK is personally my least favorite album, the drumming was just way too stagnant. Even if it was intentional, they tried to control him too much. Besides that, The Stage was such a ride of an album. Ahh! I love these guys.

I think a good portion of people ragging on his voice are hung up on the esthetic of the band. To them they appear to be a bro bro, sellout, buttrock band that makes watered down radio metal, so they judge the vocals as such. Even when they were a young crusty crossover metalcore band, I've always though that Shadows wrote really great melodies and had a style of singing were you got the sense that he was really pushing himself to the far limits of his abilities and I think that makes him an intriguing singer to listen to.

Axl's voice isn't as dark, and he has more vocal range, Justin's voice isn't as full or as nasal, Adam's voice isn't as nasal, his Ontarian accent is notable, and his distortion is chestier, and John's voice isn't as nasal or as chesty, it's consistently raspy, and he doesn't have as much vocal range. The closest vocalists who I've heard are South American and Asian cover artists who sound different because their accents are notable and they don't have similar physical builds. M.
