Krienai(horseradish) - the ''wasabi'' thing - is a condiment for meat and fish. Also can be used in sauces. It is much stronger than - let's say - British horseradish sauce. Also Lithuanian mustard is strong as well, compared to American or French mustard or even Dijon

Hmmm, sounds like it's be great on a lot of meats yes :)

Home made Krienai.....if it's in open jar, you can't even walk in the room how strong they are.......also they put some beetroot so they get a pinkish color, it makes them weaker and more manageable and more tasteful ;)
@dyto22872 жыл бұрын
Krienai is best on roasted pork or beef. Never saw someone eating it with just a bread :D

Also, boiled egg with black bread with butter + krienai on the egg. Easter vibes :)

The thing that pops into my head when I think about horseradish is boiled pig`s tongue. Or boiled pigs meat that has some fat in it. Or just meat in general. Horseradish looses its potency over time and people usually mix it with boiled beets or mayo to make it less spicy. A raw freshly grinded one is on a whole another level of spiciness than what you ate in this video. Just dont try to grind horseradish inside the house :D

Aw man, I remember my father and I grinding those roots with full-on post war gas masks, it's something else :) These plants are most spicy when harvested in spring or autumn, when they have no leafs.. so the heat varies a lot depending on the season (if it's fresh)

Thx for correcting main misconception that Baltic food is mostly plain. We have our local spicy foods and ingredients we use. You tried one and You are welcomed to try other ones to.

krienai quite popular in the villages. With bread and meat jelly (like sandwiched) it is very delicious.

Crazy foreigners eating a pastry with horseradish by the spoonful lol Glad you liked it ;D It's good with most kinds of meat, best paired with the infamous meat jelly. Also makes boiled eggs edible, so it's an Easter staple.

Thank you for visiting Lithuania and my city Vilnius:)! It is indeed a long way for you to travel here from Australia (many Lithuanian believes/ed that if we dig a tunnel from Lithuania across the Earth, we would end up in Australia, as in one children's song. In truth, our true antipode would be the Pacific Ocean near New Zealand. But the distance is still very great.) You visited us in the spring, but I hope that in the future you will visit us in the summer, for example in the last two weeks of June or in July, to see how Lithuania looks in the warm season and how different our people during this period are:) Maybe come after then the Rail Baltica train project will be finished so that you can also travel to different European cities. Like most Vilnius residents, I am ashamed that the worst part of our city is the area around the station and the airport, so the first thing travellers in our city see - is the worst part of the city. If you travelled to Kaunas by bus you could see that Kaunas bus station looked much better than in the capital Vilnius. It is because the main station in Vilnius has been privatised and is owned by private owners, not by the city itself, and they are not renewing the station. They have promised to renovate it in conjunction with the Rail Baltica project - so it will make our train and bus stations and the whole area look very different. For "krienai" part or horseradish (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Horseradish ) - it is used with meat and fish, but it's true sale boost in the shops goes around Easter (Vėlykos) - boiled eggs are eaten with a mixture of mayonnaise and krienai. No one eats it with bread:) Valio, valio Australijai, Australijai valio:) kzfaq.info/get/bejne/Y81ng6ud1dTXYac.html

Thanks so much for these thoughts :) Vilnius is changing fast I'm sure the station area will get a facelift.

Šaltiena (Aspic or meat jelly) should be eaten with Krienai(horseradish) and bread.

Yah, I suppose it's the only thing I remember eating Krienai with. Maybe sometimes with boiled egg but this may be my personal perversion.

She didn't even wince once while Crispin was struggling with every bite! Very funny. You guys sound really homesick, you must be tired of being in an entirely different culture and place. You must be glad to be back in Australia now. Great vlog content! Living in Korea, I'll go out to a company dinner and the Koreans will eat literally the hottest chicken I've ever had in my life like it's NOTHING. I'll be crying, sweating, and my nose will be running and they will act like its nothing. Sometimes I wonder it is a genetic difference.

Sorry guys you didn’t try Lithuanian “Garstyčios “ it’s like mustard but 20 times stronger. I live in South France and importing for my self Garstyčios from Lithuanian, and of course Krienai , but I discovered Krienai in pink colour( beetroot juice inside) fabulous with cold meat and barbecue. Was very interesting reaction how you both tasted Krienai, usually Lithuanian eating with meat, but definitely not what sweet bread.. Missing my Lovely Town Vilnius

We like our food like our woman, all naturale ! btw these Krienai are not that good, you need ones made by a grandma, best with any meat. And chokolate is best in Siauliai made by Ruta, that factory even has its own Caffe/Museum.
