We live full time in an RV. This season we're work camping up in New Hampshire. Several foreign students came to work with us this year - 2 of them from Lithuania. Susan decided to ask them about their 2 most popular dishes in their country. Pink soup and Kugelis. She decided to cook these dishes and serve them to Markas & Migle, the Lithuanian students, to get their reactions. Then we ask each other what common strange phrases mean. Please subscribe for more fun videos.
Here's the links to the recipes if you want to try them:
Pink Soup: somebodyfeedseb.com/lithuania...
Kugelis: youbetchcanmakethis.com/2017/...
Kim, you're in our prayers.

I'm lithuanian and those lithuanian phrases they picked for you are classic ones :). And forget the pink soup and kugelis, try fried dark rye bread sticks with cheese dip (garlicy). Ask them how to make it (or google it), I bet u will love it :)

When baking, grate the potatoes on a fine grater. Then fry the finely chopped bacon with onions in a pan and add to the grated potatoes, add milk, salt and mix. Bake in the oven. What you have cooked is not a traditional Lithuanian dish. When you're making the cold borscht, add more cucumber and onion leaves, dill. Add sour cream. Serve separately with boiled and fried potatoes. It is important that the vegetables are fresh

Unfortunately we couldn't make it with bacon because one of them was a vegetarian and wouldn't eat bacon. Thanks for the tip though.

Funny fact, Migle’s last name is Skystimaite, but her dads last name is Skystimas, which translates to a ‘liquid’. Also, there’s a saying about that - ‘skystimas’ is a man that laughs a lot, can’t stop laughing.

the girl had a lovely surname - Skystimaite can be translated as a Little Liquid. Skystimas -> Liquid :P

She probably got tired of me saying her last name all summer. I wish I would've known it can be translated as little liquid. 😄👍

Although there's no little (masculine version of the word "mažas or mažytis" and feminine "maža or mažytė" in the word. It can sound diminutive form because it's maiden name cause she's not yet married. Married women inherit their husband's surname, but they can keep current one that would change from Skystimaitė (not married version) to Skystimienė (married version).

Potatoes should be bitten, not dipped in soup. The potato must be hot. Potato stew looks like a kugel, but... Although it's probably delicious too.

Awesome, just what you made is called "students kugelis" because for proper kugel you have to mash the potatoes (yeah like fully mash non cooked potatoes). Just a short notice :D

@@NaturalStateRebels In fact, a more precise way of putting it would be to grate, not mash the potatoes. Most households in Lithuania have an electric grater and although you can use these devices to grate anything, all of them are simply called "potato graters" ;) There are more essential potato dishes that depend on them.

There are many names. English translation - ‘Potato pie’, while ‘Kugel’ is German name. I agree with ‘Plokštainis’, although, since they shredded potatoes, didn’t add bacon, they created something new, and it’s up to them to name it 😁.
