Just to clear this up since lots of people have left comments about it: I'm using the SI/IEC definition of "kilobyte" as 1000 bytes, "megabyte" as (1000)^2 bytes, "gigabyte" as (1000)^3 bytes. Since we're dealing with binary information, 2^10 bytes is technically 1024 bytes, but these days that's referred to as a kibibyte. A mebibyte is (1024)^2 bytes, a gibibyte is (1024)^3, etc. Hope that clears up the terminology used!
@SpecialAgentCake
@SpecialAgentCake 8 жыл бұрын
+It's Okay To Be Smart Besides, kilo/mega/giga/etc bytes measure the storage of information. Kibi/Mebi/Gibi/etc bytes do not reference storage, and instead are in reference to hardware such as the RAM or GPU of your computer. (Ex: I have 1 Terrabyte of HDD storage space, but 8 Gibibytes of RAM)Considering the topic of this video was _storage_ and not _computing power,_ you were *100%* right to use Kilo/Mega/Giga and not the other unit of measurement.
@Trebseig
@Trebseig 8 жыл бұрын
+It's Okay To Be Smart - Then, I don't like the SI/IEC definition, because it is just wrong, to favor an eye pleasing metric number above digital logic, when talking about digital memory. Then again; I would like to kick the byte away. Who cares about the byte, it's the bits that matter.
@SpecialAgentCake
@SpecialAgentCake 8 жыл бұрын
Giesbert Nijhuis But... It isn't "favoring" anything. This is how the numbers work to be. It isn't meant to be pleasing; they're two different units of measurement. And bytes are measures of bits, in the same way that a dime is simply a measure of 10 pennies. You wouldnt want to say "my harddrive holds 1,000,000,000 bits." It's a mouthful over, say, "1 terrabyte." Your logic here is based upon a bias to a system that would be less efficient to the one already in place.
@ZennExile

+It's Okay To Be Smart you should talk about how Quantum Supercomputers will be able to use this massive store of Data. Quantum Simulations will eventually be indistinguishable from reality. That should inspire some conversation huh? I mean what use is simulating reality...right?
@larryjohnson2971

+Special Agent Cake I think what glesbert nijhuis is meaning is he likes everything in there exacts and i also prefer it that way to. a terabyte hard drive doesn't always have a terabyte of space.

Bah, you kids and your fancy magnetic storage media. We used punch cards. Those held 80 bytes each. My first IT job was re-punching cards that had been damaged. +It's Okay To Be Smart I don't like moore's law. As for some reason, I confuse it with physics law, which lead me to suspect people also confuse it as such. Moore's law isn't really a rule that the human conscious follows subconsciously. Intel actually made it an effort to try and match moore's law. Keyword is "try". For the time it did worked, it only was because Intel made it their goal. It became sort of a self fulfilling prophecy until a couple of physics limitations slowed down transistors growth immensely.

Five dimensional objects in a three dimensional universe seems legit

You_just As I understand It's not 5D as in physical dimensions, but in how much a "bit" can store. So instead of being limited to 2 values (0 and 1), it can store 5. Yeah, kinda confusingly named.

+You_just The universe is 4 dimensional, actually. :)
@HanabiraKage

+Feynstein100 That's if you consider time a dimension. So three dimensions of space, and one dimension of time for a total of four. +Mathis Karlsson So it's just switching from binary to...quintenary? Or whatever it's called.

That really does not denote that though, the use of three periods is used to signify someone carrying on and on, going on about a particular subject and... Well you get the point.

Do you mean a Terasecond is 32,000 years? How can a terabyte be converted to seconds? It's like saying how many meters are in 50,000 liters.

Kilo= thouasnd Mega = million Giga= billion Tera = trillion Et.. And then we have units like byte, gram , watt , etc.. Instead of typing 1 000 bytes , we just say 1Kilobyte(kb), or 1 kilogram( kg) Then we continue with tera, peta, exa Just substitute with a unit Teraseconds = 1 000 000 000 000 seconds
