Gulyás==a rich soup, based on a stew. Everywhere around the world where "Goulasch" (or sg. similar) appears, means a stew, but it is purely a misinterpretation of the original recipe. On the menus, in Hungary, if you meet this name and it refers to a stew in practice, it is solely a bad translation based on this false interpretation of this meal in abroad. It is worth to check, whether the Hungarian version of the menu refers to "pörkölt" (which is the stew) or "leves" (which means soup).

I first arrived in Budapest in 1992 and spent 60 % of my time there until 2012 when I became a resident. Love it. But also love Hungary generally. Now I spend most of my time in a spa town im south west Hungary called Gyula. Fabulous.

Gulyás was sort of adopted as our national food in the 19th century when every country had to have one. It was a thick soup or thin stew, somewhere in between. Over the years it became the soup version in hungary, but due to emigrants to the usa and elsewhere preparing it as a thick stew the confusion around it's consistency arose. The thick stew that tourists eat under the name "goulash" is actually another dish called pörkölt which if you type into youtube you will get tons of recipes for.

So happy you made this!! I like the way you handled the 'value' question because we were kind of surprised that it was more expensive that we thought! We always heard it was so cheap, but it wasn't as cheap as the "easter european" cheap that's rumored about!.. we thought the same about buda vs. pest. we stayed in buda and loved it for the nature and buda castle, but the pest side is where all the fun stuff is! Hungarian IS really hard to learn lol, so it is really nice when people practice their english with you hahha... also goulash is a stew!!!!! lol We couldn't believe how fast the internet was there! Our apartment we stayed in had really poor internet, but when we did work in random cafes, our videos would upload in less than an hour!!

Goulash (gulyás) is officially a soup. The stew is either called pörkölt or paprikás (they are thicker than your average stew though). The neighbouring countries started to call the stew goulash too merely for the sake of simplicity.

I don't think that's nit picky about the price of wines... if you see a price in a menu then that charged 3 times for it in the end is a con! The stu, breaded meats and sausages look great 😍

Mate ! Goulash is a soup and it supposed to be a lil more runny then the stew wich called pörkölt ... pörkölt must be more thick and with less or no veggies like carrots potatoes and stuff and you order it with something on the side .. like gnocchi kinda noodles or potatoes etc

Gulyas is for us is a soup, but westerners don't know really real soups. This is coming from different cooking cultures, and until western cooking style is to fry everything mostly, the east is mostly boil. So, therefore you get sometimes get a stew, but gulyas is really a soup.
