My wife has been a Walmart employee for going on 7 yrs and we get the Walmart discount and use a lot of great value brand items and we have no problem with it. I don’t have a number but I know we’ve saved a significant amount of money shopping this way.

I've found Aldi brands to often be as good or better than name brand. A big one is mayo. I'm a Hellman's girl, but their Burman's mayo tastes the same and costs a lot less. I've heard theyre the same product, but I can't confirm it. Aldi's wheat thins are better, as they're less sweet. Most of their chips are good, although their corn chips are nowhere near as good as Fritos. Cheese is great there, as is butter. Their hummus is amazing. Most cereal is great, but their honey nut cheerios are terrible. I think that product just can't be properly replicated. Wal-Mart's version of Nutter Butters taste the same as name-brand. Their Golden Oreos knock-offs are pretty good, but they don't taste like Oreos. Butter and cheese are good. Hummus is good. Frozen veggies are good. Their Hawaiian rolls taste like the King's brand.

I was SHOCKED when I purchased the Aldi burman brand of mayonnaise to find no difference with Hellmans (which I generally will not move away from) - and less than $2. (I was commenting and now I see the exact same comment below.) We have both Aldi and Lidl in our city and I save a TON there. Lidl is a tiny bit higher than Aldi, but a much nicer shopping experience with brighter lights and wider aisles and bakery to DIE for.

We almost always buy generic unless name brand is on sale cheaper. One thing I prefer name brand of is dish soap. Dawn and Palmolive cut grease much better with less soap. I think generics have a higher water content. So I wait for a sale or good coupon and stock up then.

I work on the principle of always try the generic product then if it is a like or an OK, it stays and only if we can't cope with or hate it, will it go. So far, the only branded item to stay is Heinz Tomato Sauce! A good hundred or so items swapped so far and more to try as things run out. Wish I'd thought to track the money saved!!

I buy mainly generic then decanter everything into nice jars or containers, even my instant coffee! You’d be surprised at how many don’t notice the difference when I put homebrand into a key brand recycled container.. My dishwashing liquid is homebrand & goes into a leading brand (recycled) squirty bottle. Why waste your money unnecessarily?!

So, my children are now adults. In the 90's (before Dave Ramsey was famous) my playground moms' group was all into reading and trying ideas from Amy Dacyzn's books THE TIGHTWAD GAZETTE. Amy said those differences in flavor from name brand to store brand were acquired preferences. I made the switch then from Frosted MiniWheats to the store brand bag. Recently, my son (now 35 and living in another state)) had a bowl of the name brand his housemate bought. The name brand was so off taste to him, he had to tell me about it; proving Amy Dacyzn correct about the differences in re ideas being an acquired taste. 😊

I think for anyone who's living paycheck to paycheck, this isn't a question to begin with; it's generics all the way. There are very few brands that I absolutely insist on. Heinz ketchup is the only one I can think of, off the top of my head.
@Trustbutverify2651

And a big bottle of ketchup will last a while - not like cereal which goes really fast. Kids' cereals are really a budget buster if you have a lot of kids. They have gone sky high in price with less in each box.

Aldi->Trader Joe's->Dollar Store->Wal-Mart->Target->Unionized Grocery Chains Follow this flowchart when buying groceries and home stuff. Whatever you can't get in the previous one, you get at the next one if they have it, and so on. The unionized grocery stores are the worst and make up the most grocery stores. The one thing that's virtually impossible to buy generic and make it near as good as name brand - Oreos. They are America's favorite cookie for a reason.

Pasta. Absolutely. It’s all about the sauce anyway. Having said that , I haven’t tried any of food lions sauces. I do buy Wegmans store brand, although they appear to be more expensive. I’m hooked on their pomodoro sauce, though.

Yes, name brands are worth it. For instance: some "off the shelf" brands of steel cut oats, quinoa, millet, and brown rice are labeled "organic" but when tested, have been found to have 2-10 times more pesticide residues then the popular organic name brands of the same items. Yes, organic name brand items are more expensive, but you'll be spending less at the doctor's and having to take off less sick days if your money is well spent. Obviously, don't buy anything highly processed (like breakfast cereals, breakfast bars, rice in a box, or other such nonsense). Buy only whole foods if you are buying "brand names" of anything. Anything else can come from your local farmers, such as vegetables and grass fed meat, antibiotic-free chicken, etc. It's tough to trust big brand names for organic items of these as well, so go local.
@truthseeker6370
@truthseeker6370 9 ай бұрын
Note the "grass fed beef" scam. ALL beef is grass fed- what matters is how it's "finished"... likely not with grass. I got caught up in this "grass fed" myth myself and paid extra for basic beef. And Organic doesn't mean pesticide-free either. Most Organic foods are treated with "approved" pesticides. What does that even mean 🤔
@yogaforlyme9841
@yogaforlyme9841 9 ай бұрын
@@truthseeker6370 yeah, both reasons (bad beef and sprayed organics) are why it's important to shop at your local farmer; the person or persons you know and trust who don't spray their veggies and treat their animals right.

I've come to realize that the key to amassing wealth lies in making sound investments. I purchased my first home at the age of 21 for $87,000 and sold it for $197,000. My second home, acquired for $170,000, was later sold for $320,000, and my third property, purchased at $300,000, fetched $589,000, with buyers covering all closing costs and expenses. Not reaching a million before retirement feels like an unfulfilled goal.-
