Cars 2 is canon, the reason why it’s not mentioned in future cars projects is because 1) It doesn’t really fit in with the Cars timeline, it seems likely we’ll never see any (if not most) of the characters in Cars 2 make a return in any future Cars projects. 2) Pixar seems to be too embarrassed to acknowledge the fact that Cars 2 is a movie that actually exists

I think another point is that mcqueen didnt allow mater to go to races, but after the spy incident he did- and infact mater is always there at mcqueens races at Florida, holy moly the cars lore is messed up rn.

Cars 2 is slightly canon when you think about it Lightning McQueen kept his flaming 95 bolt on the side of him and his headlights actually worked in Cars 3, and Mater said something about him getting wedding flaps meaning he'll get married to Holly Shiftwell!

I think Cars 2 should've been that World Cup that happened in the background and the Mater stuff should've been a spin-off movie. It could be a conspiracy taking place during the race and the spin-off goes deeper into the Mater stuff. Cars 2 could end with Axelrod on the news and some mysteries about his connection to the exploding racers. I think another thing that'd make it better is if Mater had connections to the spies before like he's retired and playing dumb. It'd be less jokey and more like they need a retired veteran's help to catch Axelrod, it could dive into Mater lore, maybe he lost a significant other in the spy force and chose to return to a simpler life? It'd make him similar to Hudson in the way that they both moved on from their younger more crazy years and just want to relax. Edit: Fixed small grammatical issues.

I honestly liked Cars 2 more than 1 & 3, just because as a kid, it was cool to see spy action. Even if it wasn’t technically a good story, it was just plain old cool for a young kid.

I say it is canon as McQueen has his headlights, Mater is at all his races, McQueen has 5 (if I remember correctly) piston cups when in Cars 2 he had 4 so he definitely got more, Cruiz mentions that she saw McQueen flying and wanted to be confident like him (though this could be about the Cars 1 Sven when McQueen sticks his tongue out instead of flying with Mater in London) On the other hand Mater’s dent is gone so maybe the free “pistachio ice cream” messed with his mind and the only canon part is the World Grand Prix but that wouldn’t explain why McQueen knows the spies and well Mater got the dent before he went to Towkyo (yes that is the name of the place) so I don’t really understand if it’s TRULY CANON

I don't know if it is just me but did anyone realise Lightning Mcqueen sounded different in Cars 2 compared to his car sounds in Cars 1 and Cars 3.

Also Cruz's assistant in cars 3 is Lewis Hamilton from cars 2 and a and when matter says he kept the turbines he might mean temporarily

Not many people know this but in the scene where Smokey shows McQueen the newspaper clippings, one of the clippings has an image of Acer falling into the sewer truck. That really confirms that Cars 2 is canon.

These videos about whether Cars 2 really happened are pretty hilarious. You don't see people questioning if Incredibles 2, Toy Story 2/3/4, or Finding Dory are canon to their respective series. You don't even see these kinds of video essays with Cars 3. It's only Cars 2. That really demonstrates just how much people hated that movie. It's been over 10 years since its release, and it's STILL treated like the black sheep of the Pixar movie lineup, so much so that even the folks at Pixar pretend that movie doesn't exist. I agree with the general consensus that Cars 2 was horrible by Pixar and general movie standards, but these videos are pretty hysterical. 🤣🤣

I believe that Cars 2 (along with Planes and Planes 2: Fire and Rescue) is canon in the cars universe cause Mater comes to all of Lightning's races, Lighting's has his headlights from Cars 2, Jeff Gorvette appears in the Florida Speedway, and for mater missing his dent from Cars 2 that could be a animation error that Disney and Pixar forgot to fix, and he and Holly could be dating online.

perhaps Mcqueen did go to world grand prix, from time to time popular racers do go into other racing series for various reasons (see Dale Earnhardt sr & jr, Danica patrick, jeff gordon and many more), specially for WGP since it is more a publicity stunt than anything else, it would make sense to have the piston cup hotshot to make starts there to me, cars 2 happened, the spy thing? prolly and i hope not, and it would be just another tall tale as usual, everything racing wise happened, i just wish we got to see more of it
