Caste and untouchability owe their origin to brahmanical Hinduism. But is caste oppression restrained to the Hindu community? Are there no castes in Christianity and Islam? If not, then who are the Dalit Christians and Dalit Muslims?
In this episode of What’s Your Ism, host Sudipto Mondal speaks to Ambedkarite author Shalin Maria Lawrence, and sociologist-professor Khalid Aniz Ansari about the intersection of caste identities, anti-caste discourse, and affirmative actions for the oppressed castes in minority religions.
Ansari says, “If you’re talking about democratic politics, four or five castes cannot be allowed to dominate any category.”
Lawrence recounts lived experiences of discrimination in church, and also asks, “If Periyar was an intellectual, and he used to talk about reformation, he talked about cutting off uteruses, why didn’t he cut his caste ties?”

The ancestor of every Muslim living in India today was a native Indian once in the past. They all converted to Islam like few others had adopted Buddhism, Sikhism, or Christianity due to the atrocities of Sanatana Brahmans. Even Chandragupta Moury, who ruled the largest parts of India, had ultimately adopted Jainisam and his grandson Ashoka adopted Buddhism.

@@mrking05gaming8 i haven't said anything wrong, the reason why ashoka chooses jainism because of kalinga war nothing to do with cast and baba saheb whom i admire alot chooses Buddhism and was a critics of Islamic religion, his stand on cast is valid one but it is wrong to say all the people who converted to islam is because of castism

The caste oppression is prevalent in Christianity. The academic article which I am familiar is C.J Fuller on Syrian Christians. Please read it.

@@kushsingh9088 It is not about Reservation or Affirmative Action. It is about dignity and respect but sadly, people have reduced the concept of Reservation, Affirmative Action and Positive Discrimination to Government Jobs and Educational facilities. Try to find out that how many people of reserved categories have reached to the topmost position in Corporate Sector or even becoming the CJI of the Apex Court of India. In addition to this, people of these reserved communities are ridiculed unnecessarily by the upper castes even in other religions.

@@anishabara4332 bhai listen in higher judiciary people are appointed differently and mostly people are selected on the bases of nepotism. Cast based reservation has failed to solved the problem of castism and people in other community also faces discrimination so reservation should be economic based and reservation percentage should be dropped and more focus should be given on generating employment rather than reservation and problem of castism will be and only be solved through education and awareness and people coming through reservation will have difficulty to reach top most position based on merits

@@kushsingh9088 Now that depends on how the upper caste treat the lower castes as often quoted by Dr. Ambedkar. I have seen this while studying at DU. People just show their hatred to lower castes plus you are saying this because you do not belong to these categories and therefore, have not experienced the vile discrimination that still goes on. My solution is this the the upper castes should first remove their castes consciousness by acknowledging the grave discrimination that happened in past. Till then live and let live!!!!!

RSS/BJP does not want to relieve Shudra from its slavery. Hence opposing cast census! Shudra from the Southern States have mostly set themselves free from this Sanatana Slavary and progressed well. All those who don't wear Janeu are the Shudra population. For Janeudhari Sanatana Hindus of RSS/BJP, Native Indians/Shudra population become Hindus only during elections.

I am from Shillong and I am a Catholic. We do not see and practice caste in Shillong. But I have heard about it in Delhi. It was a shocking news for me that things like that existed in Indian churches. I have never seen it practice in the Catholic Church of Delhi. If some churches practice it, the church leaders should put a stop on it.

Bro i dont see upper caste discriminating lower caste since i live in semi urban area i can only talk about it but now i am seeing the flip side of caste based politics where politicians are putting lower caste against upper hindus and now bringing other religions into reservation the insecurities or harmony between hindu and muslim will suffer
