Thank you for mentioning the point of being able to learn along with our children. I have heard it described as “redeeming our education.” I have even been learning what the Charlotte Mason Method is. As we go along in our efforts, my kids and I enjoy and grow more and more. It has empowered our homeschool. It has grown our relationships among ourselves and with others. Thank you SCM for all your work. You have been a tremendous blessing to me on our homeschool journey.

We agree! We have also had personal experiences "redeeming our education" as we get to learn along with our children in this rich and beautiful way. I am so glad you are also experiencing this through your efforts as well.

I read one poem to my high schoolers each week. Then they both read it aloud (so we hear it three times) and then I read about the poet from the encyclopedia. We may talk about other poems we are familiar with by the same poet. So Poetry, as a subject, takes about 20 minutes of the entire week. A relative of mine said we "do nothing but read poems." 😒🙄😁 I'm sure my kids wish that was all we did formally. It's my favorite 20 minutes of the week and I do talk about it a lot more than Algebra.

Right! Talking about our enrichments is much more fun than talking about math or spelling. :) I'm glad you have that wonderful poetry time to look forward to and share with others.

Thank you so much for this glimpse into the future and the affirmations to stick with it. My eldest is only in kindergarten and I'm only doing a little bit of math and LA work alongside some CM enrichments, and already I have friends and family asking, "So... Are you just homeschooling for this year? When do you think you'll stop?" as if to imply that public schooling is obviously superior and more rigorous. As a former teacher myself, and someone who was fully educated in the public system, I am more and more encouraged and convinced that CM is such a better education. I so related to your brief anecdotes of your high school experiences, and saw this in the teens I taught, and I see absolutely no need to put my kids through that.

Sonya, I love your videos and your approach to CM. I find CM to be applicable to my continuing education as an adult who does not plan on having children. CM is so much more than an elementary curriculum and style of learning! Thanks for all that you do!

Almost everything I have learned, I've learned after graduating high school. I remembered nothing from all those years in school. As an adult, I dove into podcasts, books, videos, movies, and learned so much more than we discussed in school, and I was actually able to remember it for the first time. When people act like my kids need hard textbooks and school buildings to learn, I just remember none of that worked for me. I'm excited about the opportunity for them to learn the way I learned without going through the stressful years of "traditional " school that didn't work for me and so many others.

I love this video!! I was wondering, how many hours a day does it take for a High Schooler using SCM to complete his work?

Thank you for your question. You can expect around 4 hours for a high school student to complete their work. You can read more about that here: simplycharlottemason.com/blog/charlotte-mason-high-school/ simplycharlottemason.com/blog/4-hours-for-high-school/

I loved this podcast, thank you. I’ve recently come across Charlotte Mason after always Educating my children at home. They’re 8 and 9.5 now and I’m feeling totally lost! Everything I read spreaks about Charlotte Mason with the early years or with teens and this 8-12 year old age seams to just be missing, left out. I wish there was more out there for this age.

Hi, Thank you for reaching out with your question! This link gives a good overview of what a Charlotte Mason approach looks like in elementary school: simplycharlottemason.com/blog/charlotte-mason-elementary-school/ If you are looking for curriculum specific recommendations, you may also want to look through this page, this will give you an overview of recommendations for elementary school. If you were to use SCM curriculum, you would choose one guide for history/Bible/geography and one for enrichment studies using these two guides to teach your family together. You would then choose a guide for "individual studies" by grade level for each of your children which will link you to resources for language arts, science, and math. simplycharlottemason.com/planning/curriculum-guide/overview-chart/

Loved to see you both together 🤗.I was thinking about the same thing - how much do you ‘push’ your student to go deep into the readings or meet them where they are at, or some kind of pull effect to get it all done… art the end of the Day it depends on your trajectory

Thank you for this! I am amazed that people think that C.M. is easy peasy. While it is do-able, and I like that about her method, I still find it to be daunting! Maybe some people are just jealous or simply dumbfounded by how much fun we have. 😊

This sounds amazing! Is it too difficult to start CM style education in high school? I'm afraid it would overwhelm my non-rigorous style student. She's a decent reader, but not a fast reader. Also, how does science work?

I’m having a hard time choosing books to use for our science lessons for my older son. He LOVES science and I want to make sure he gets a very thorough education while also maintaining the Christian point of view. We are still learning and figuring out the Charlotte mason way in our homeschool so if anyone has any recommendations for a still pretty new-to-Charlotte mason mama I would love to hear. With 4 boys and life i feel like I’m drowning and not giving them enough of what they need educationally😞

I have been using CM for my highschoolers and there is no issue with the rigorousness of the curriculum, that is not my difficulty. It has sometimes seemed like too much in fact! I'd like to know whether others have thought it is too much? I have felt overwhelmed trying to participate in the difficult subjects while I still have kids in younger grades.

What I've found lacking in students when they get to high school is an inability to write at the same level they're able to do orally, which is a disadvantage for them. I think if parents are mindful of that and don't blow off making their children write more at younger ages, then you'll have the best of both worlds.
