The Chinese Communist Party congress was watched in Taiwan even more closely, and with even more concern than ever this year.
Xi Jinping clinched a historic third five-year term as China's leader, and there are dire warnings about what that means for the country. The head of the US Navy has cautioned that the world needs to be prepared for the Chinese invasion of Taiwan by the end of the year.
Newsnight’s diplomatic editor Mark Urban reports on the mood in the Taiwanese capital Taipei.

Stay until 2024 if there is not a government simpatazing with Beijing then I suggest you pack and move ! You can see the elections in January 2024. If someone like the current president come out then Move mate because big storm will come for sure..... 100 % between 2027-2029 they will take it by force the most late 2029 then they will give a 20 years adjustment period and then full domination by 2049. This is in all plans in Beijing since July 2015 !

3:33 let's make it clear that there's no separatism, nor re-unification. It is an invasion if china uses force. Taiwan has never been a part of PRC in a single day in the history. It's china's dream like Putin to Ukraine. Ukraine was a member of USSR, yet Taiwan has never been a part of PRC in a single day in the history.. if ppl appreciate and support the front line physicians, nurses and workers for COVID-19, ones should have the same toward to Taiwan bcz Taiwan is the front line to stop Totalitarianism expansion.

Taiwan reminds me of the old USA back in the 1700s where a country said they belonged to them but in practice they are so independent and able to stand on their own. I know Taiwan can not declare independence without causing a war between them and China, but I do see a day were they might. I love Taiwan in that they are able to rise up and stand on their own and to be their own culture. Taiwan should be proud of what they have done and the whole World is watching them.

Don't bother engaging with the political rhetoric. It's primarily aimed to confuse people who are insufficiently informed about the history. It's a shame that history put the CCP in the position of power that it now is able to exploit in this way. It's never been good for the Chinese people even if parts of that history were historically inevitable. You do wonder, though, how things might have turned out for the better if the nationalists were not left in such a weak position after WWII. They weren't necessarily ideologically admirable but Mao really screwed the nation up badly and created the autocratic precedent that Xi now relies on. Imagine the world if China was actually a positive moderating force in geopolitics. They want to contain the US - an understandable motive - but Xi's idea of what's good and right in government and international affairs is corrupt at its core. Such s shame to watch such a beautiful civilization be corrupted by such rot

Good to know the PRC's internal corruption & top-down power structure is no better than Russia - & relying on quantity over quality/training. Actual combat experience is something they can't afford. My dad was a former US Marine who rose to the exalted rank of E3. He can't imagine how much of a shitshow his Company would have been if it were solely composed of 6 officers and 100 junior enlisted. The PRC got this flaw. Their military is completely untested against modern capable foes. While Russian forces were more than adequate to control the uprising in Chechnya and Aleppo, their superiority in numbers & equipment meant very little when it went up against Ukraine's British and American trained militaries. Our unified combat commands are all over this planet. Experience is something we have in spades.

And even in the unlikely event that the invasion would happen, China would not be able to conquer Taiwan ( and even if they would succeed, keeping the island would be impossible. )The conflict from the invasion would also most likely start World War lll and nuclear holocaust. So it's more likely that China will continue build up it's trade relations, economical power and infrastructure projects.. rather than start a war were it would loose all of it 🤔

For those advocating independence for Taiwan, don’t forget that “Taiwan” is formally called Republic of China (ROC). The ROC was founded in 1911 as the first democratic republican country in Asia, and just celebrated its 111 year anniversary in October. The ROC has never gone away and therefore there is no point saying it should or shouldn’t declare “independence” - it has been an independent sovereign republic since 1911, 10 years before CCP’s founding.

Could conflict between China and the West be avoided if the Taiwanese people, for those so inclined, were allowed to migrate on mass to Australia and possibly other countries? After all, Australia needs to grow its population for developmental reasons and the Taiwanese have amply demonstrated their ability to forge an economically successful democracy. Such people would make an excellent addition to Australia and its way of life. I support the One-China policy and recognise that some Taiwanese are happy to accept mainland rule while others are not. For those that are not, they should have the option of leaving Taiwan for Australia, or somewhere else, especially if that will help prevent conflict between China and the West. The US will not defend Taiwan because it supports the One China policy which means it recognises the territory of the former as being an indivisible part of China. This means the US believes that China is not committing an act of aggression against an independent or foreign nation by asserting its authority over the island. The Evidence for this claim comes in many forms, ranging from its general economic decline to its inability to match China and Russia in such technologies as hypersonic missiles, to the social divisions emerging within its population. The US is supposed to be the "arsenal of democracy" and yet it is not providing weapons to the Taiwanese for free but rather at some considerable profit. Also, what has been sold to the Taiwanese is outdated equipment. ““What this tells you should be obvious: the US has zero expectation that Taiwan will hold out against the [Chinese People’s Liberation Army]. It just assumes that everything sold to Taiwan will eventually end up in PLA hands. This is why it refused to deliver the AIM-120 missiles until the PLA possessed their own missiles that were just as good,” Lu wrote. “That’s not to say that the US won’t sell weapons to Taiwan. Just in the past 12 months it’s sold to Taiwan the M1A2 MBT, M109 SPA, and F-16V fighter jet, but these are all current generation or last generation equipment. The PLA will gain little tech knowledge when reverse engineering these pieces after Taiwan has capitulated. By contrast, the F-35 is too cutting edge to be forked over to the PLA, thus the US won’t export it to Taiwan.” …. added that it’s not that Taiwan can’t afford the F-35s. “If the US really had any hopes for Taiwan to hold out, it would be giving Taiwan F-35s for free, …”” - 19fortyfive-2021-11-should-taiwan-buy-f-35-stealth-fighters None of this suggests that the US is serious about defending Taiwan. So, the question becomes, what chance have the Taiwanese got in a fight against its vastly larger and better-armed neighbour? The outcome is obvious and so it is really just a matter of saving as many lives as possible that is the real issue here. That can be achieved by allowing those who do not wish to live under the rule of the Communist Party to leave and become citizens of some other democracy, such as Australia. Upholding Chinese sovereignty does not have to result in a massive loss of life on both sides of the Taiwan Strait in a military conflict that would also result in significant material destruction and environmental damage to both sides, and to any other nations choosing to involve themselves. A peaceful outcome that is in line with the beliefs of the democracies of this world concerning the sanctity of human life can be achieved in a manner consistent with allowing the democratic aspirations of the Taiwanese to live on, all be it, in another country or countries who are similarly committed to the same way of life. There does not have to be armed conflict between the West and China. There is another way to resolve the Taiwanese matter and that involves allowing the migration of a large part of the Taiwanese population to Australia.

@@SoapinTrucker Listen to BBC's talk. BBC is talking about the founder of nationalist movement. And that is Sun Yat-Sen. BBC was right about Sun Yat-Sen being the founder of the nationalist movement. And look twice. The status is Sun Yat-Sen, not Chiang Kai-Shek. BBC is right about both. In addition, if this video is about history of Sun Yat-sen or Chiang Kai-Shek, I'd agree the statue may be of somewhat importance. But here the statue is not that important for the purpose of this video discussion.
