Only one of 5 college grads make more than a traveling union journeyperson. If you go to a union your apprenticeship is worth 23 college credits. So you still can do college if you want to. I traveled all over the country building scaffold for the carpenters union and the best I did was 180k in one year take home. unions are very beneficial. and before anyone takes a knock at the unions you best thank them for your weekends off work, lus you can learn a trade which will always be needed.

Only about 10% of the degrees from collage worth anything.

Most people go into college not knowing what they want to do. In the end, most don't end up getting a job in the same field. People need to start treating college like a trade school. You have to look at the ROI (Return on Investment). Is it worth taking out $200K to get an education in art history? Just look at the employment page and see how many job openings out there for an art history major and what the starting pay is? Chances are you cannot make a good argument about spending $200K for an art history degree. Let's be realistic, most people aren't working their dream job. Even if you offer me my dream job, I wouldn't take it. Mike Rowe has talked about not following your passion. Majority of the people will fail at their passion. Just look at how many people gets rejected on getting in to American Idol. There are plenty of jobs out there that you can make decent money so you can pay to do things you are passionate about.

I am very lucky to have found something I am not only good at but also love doing. I am now in a position to do something I have always want to to do and that is teach and pass on what I have learned throughout my career.

Not sure what the CEO stands for and witch local union are you looking for? I am planning to make a video for local #3’s new master agreement that will be going into affect next month. That will include the pay scale increases.

I don't actually know about jumping in construction trade .you kinda have to have a friend of a friend or family into it as most companies are stuck up with the hiring .or your going to be stuck with shovel in your hand for decades or be just the hoe pack guy or compactor guy.because guys like you don't retire early.then again cat is making self driving equipment now and sitting at home infront of a computer screen operating 18 Peace's of equipment stuff you wouldn't need imployees just a service guy .and a pipe fitter. Then operators now days need to sit down with the people that design machines and tell them what not to do because they are literally designing machines to not have guys like you. Self driving rock trucks means self driving dozers loaders and excavators .then you don't need imployees don't have to pay all the costs of that . If it was me doing the hiring .it would be exactly like this you said you can operate equipment .trail and air show me you have one chance to screw up. And have a small non job site area for them to show me .

I don't see automation taking over the trades anytime soon. Only in a controlled environment can it be done. In the underground work there is so many small things that would prevent a operator from doing the job from home. I would love to be able to sit down with the design engineers to chat about what we need and don't need. As for new hiring of employees, I do a lot of the evaluations for new operators and labors coming into the company. I also instruct our future diggers/lead operators. And your last statement is correct. If we are trying out a new unknown skilled operator, I will put them in a location that they can't hurt anything and say show me what you got.

@@TheLeverMonkey I didn't want to say anything that would piss you off with the retirement stuff I completely understand that because the cost of everything don't stop going up. They just came out cat did anyway the self driving stuff probably be out sooner then later . they got video out of some of the self driving stuff .you can blame the farming self driving stuff for that .but I would assume rock trucks and scrapers would be more common self driving things first.you would only need a dozer guy for the scrapers for when they need the push.underground utilities it's only a matter of time they put cameras on booms and sticks .I think just a stick camera would help some operators for when there digging down and can't see . something deere needs to do I seen some digging in trench boxes that were standing up in cab looking out past the cab kinda unsafe if you ask me camera would help that

Not mad. I had to wait my turn for my lead guy to retire. It is something all operators have to go true. I am surprised they have not found a way to put cameras on the excavators to help the operators dig. I do understand why they have not as they would not last long. As for me retiring, I am already training my replacement. I have about 8 years left. But I will be out of the seen sooner than that.
