Yeah she is not like one punch-man. Who wants a challenging fight with his own powers getting in the way of that goal. With his good deeds, before he joined the heroes group. Credit was given to others. More than once. Not being rewarded for his good deeds. That and even after he joins the heroes. Deep Sea King arc. To allow the other heroes to save face. He plays the role of the bad guy and accepts the blame. Saves a city and the whole thing is turn against him, to paint him as the bad guy. Showing human emotions as he kind of lets loose by speaking with words. Sure he might be an all powerful god when it comes to a fight, yet mentally a whole another story. That and you get to see what he was like before he got his powers. Seeing yeah he is not the same as he was in the past. While the only conflict if you can call it that for good girl. Happens to be with her sister from the future. So they are the only people who have super powers. Yet somehow they are enslaved? How did that happen? Given sure not everyone might be as strong as good girl but surely they would have the edge in any sort of fight, if their powers only grant a minor edge over a normal person. So if you take it as a conflict of ideas. It kind of falls apart, given how does someone with no super powers enslave a group of people who have super powers? Given having super powers would be like having a edge in technology, even if you are out numbered. The technology can help make up for it. Well maybe another conflict could be called her saving people. From a town that is majority of one group. Yet again that doesn't make much sense. She is basically doing her job, saving people. It doesn't take alot of time to go, oh yeah of course the majority of people she is going to save will be x. Due to that being the majority that makes up the town. How did it make her popularly drop that massively, over something that has a very simple counter anyone could make, once you think about it for a few minutes. That and did her becoming not as popular effect anything really? Given oh ok people dislike her now. Does that limit her ability to save people or are limits put in place by the government to ensure she doesn't go rogue or something due to questionable actions lately that been making them look bad or at least her? Did people start refusing her help to be saved by her? Why does her being popular or not matter again? In my hero academia, at least you know it effects there rank to a degree. Which can effect the cash they can get their hands on. Given things go well for Good Girl and than so called bad things happen but why are they bad? What effect do they have? That or simply making no sense. Which makes it hard to take any of these bad things that happen as serious, due to coming off as so force and shoe horned in.

They come to me now and say "Do you know what the news said? They said that..." and proceed to tell me how they are vilifying some random innocuous thing like a glass of milk, a union flag on a shoe, the male gaze, and so on. I've known about this stuff for years, but now they are starting to understand that the rabbit hole just doesn't end. I guess what I'm saying is there is hope. The last part about rip off vs inspiration hit me in a personal level. I write novel as a hobby and I always worry that my story is just a rip off of a more popular one. And when he is listing what make a story unique, I nearly cry because now I know that the story I made, though is inspired by many stories I read, but it is my own, for I pure my heart and soul into creating every elements of it.

Mine too. I would be the first to say, "There is nothing original in this story and that's okay." It's tropes and themes we've all seen before, but placed into different settings and mixed with other sources of inspiration. What tropes I could put a unique twist on, I did. The ones I couldn't without destroying the narrative, I didn't. I didn't want to force innovation where it doesn't have to be.

At this point in time, the line between *"rip off"* and *"inspired by"* is getting blurred. Just blatantly calling something a *rip off,* just because a character or story seem similar to each other, is kind of hostile without giving the other character/story a chance to be unique on its own. Take for instance the story I'm coming up with, it's based on Philippine Mythology. But I also thought of how to make it unique. So I thought to myself, _"why not borrow elements from other mythology."_ It hit me that I made the Philippine Gods a bit similar to Norse Mythology, by giving it the 9 worlds system. But at the same time giving it its own unique spin by having 13 Diwatas as founders of the Pantheon of Philippine Mythology. Each 13 Diwatas are unique. For ex, Arao is the first god of fire. Every Diwata that wields fire, would be Arao's descendant. Point is, even if people calls your work a rip off, don't let it discourage you, and just try to improve and strive for uniqueness.

bagsikdangal Same with me, my story’s premise is about virtual reality game, kinda like SAO (I like the premise, but not the plot) and also had its episodic feeling. While the world building is that of a typical fantasy world like lord of the ring, but with its own depth in culture and ability. But what I most proud of is my main character, at first I imagine him to me the typical protagonist, nice, heroic and just an all around good person. Then I realize that I will be giving him a lot of op power and I then again had a ptsd from SAO. So I decide to turn his character into a self-centered manipulating asshole whose everything he do benefit himself in some way. Rescue a princess? He did it because having a future monarch being grateful to him will be highly beneficial in the long run. Freeing slaves? When you buy a slave, you gain their obedience, but when you free a slave, you gain their loyalty. Not to mention his most op power is slowly corrupting him and those around him into an unfeeling monsters. It was a blast writing this guy, though this type of character probably exist somewhere else already, I know that this specific one, is my own.

Picasso had lots of non-abstract works that proved he had skills, though. His abstract art was not a mask for his inability to properly depict human figures, which I find is often what people dislike about modern "artists" who make claims about trying to be "different" when the truth is they don't know any actual techniques or possess any actual skills. I can't ascribe to the school of "everything you make is art".

The "No Politics" aspect of ComicsGate is becoming something of a misnomer taken literally. Politics in comics are like war in foreign policy. Saying that you're against it as a blanket statement is like saying you're against screwdrivers. Sure it's annoying to watch inept people try to beat nails into wood with a screwdriver's handle, but that's not the tool's fault. Just the dolt wielding the tool. To repeat an idea regarding Captain America which I heard articulated by Razorfist (not to steal the idea, but because sometimes you hear something so correct that it deserves to be repeated), it's not that politics have never been in comics or don't belong in them at all. The claim that "comics have always been political", while misleading, is technically correct. Half-truths are the most powerful of lies because they always start by stealing unearned credibility from that which is true and giving it to that which isn't. What makes the idea of the perpetual politics of comics misleading is that, especially in the case of Captain America, those politics were used to bring polarized people together, usually for a common purpose that's good for everyone. The problem with the attempt made by Black AF's author (I'm not even going to *try* spelling it out) is that his story takes a united people who are already on board with common causes and polarizes them into smaller tribes, where they supposedly belong. It's just a coincidence that this tribalization is the kind of thing that would make the job of a would-be conqueror, despot, or power-hungry politician measurably easier... right? Throughout your entire rundown of Black AF, I wasn't really thinking "so basically Man of Steel" as you concluded, but "so basically X-Men". Unfortunately, while I loved what X-Men was going for, it seemed to have a highly detrimental effect whenever anybody since then has tried the same idea of an oppressed minority stand-in decides to take revenge on their oppressors, while another oppressed minority stand-in advocates peace. The allusion to Malcom X versus MLK respectively need not be emphasized further at this point, I would hope. Perhaps it's just human nature to see the revenge advocate as in the right and the peace advocate as a naive fool, a misinterpretation plaguing the entire mutant sub-genre of Marvel Comics (save for maybe Deadpool). The way I write, I tend to make works with themes of disparate parties coming together. Perhaps in the hopes of healing the wounds caused by the culture war. Perhaps because I grew up on Power Rangers and other shonenoid nakama schlock. Either way, you can't have stories like that without acknowledging the politics of each faction, even if those politics are based wholly on fictional circumstances. Imagine if the Star Wars prequels were competent. Basically that.
@Sorain1
@Sorain1 5 жыл бұрын
At the end of the day, one of the reasons humans dominated the Earth is that, despite all their reasons to hate each other? The moment anything showed up that hurt more than one subgroup, humans showed that incredible empathy and sympathy for each other, and helped. When a hurricane sweeps in and devastates a village, their rival village would help them. The fact they'd been at war for two generations the day before the hurricane didn't matter. The few who held onto those hatreds and tried to act on them would be shamed for it. 'These people are suffering, we should be helping them.' is a universal human outcry since antediluvian times. It's a core part of human nature and at least some have made a reasonable argument that it is the greatest virtue of humanity. There is a reason why dehumanizing your enemy has been required for all of human history, and it says something good about the nature of humans that such is required. That it doesn't stick, that it's unnatural, hard to do and so easily broken.
@DonVigaDeFierro

That's ... kind of the point. You give politics an equal ground, not simply favor one position over the other. And you don't preach to the people as if you want to convince them to think what you want. Following that example, maybe the aggressive ones have a point, because being peaceful has never given good results to their people, and maybe the peaceful ones have a point as well, because they don't want an all-out conflict that may end with everyone dead... Ultimately, the story is not about this "struggle of ideas". Yes, you explore them, you deconstruct them, but you don't base your entire work on that. Ideally, one finds a way to marry the best parts of all ideas in an effort to end an absurd dichotomy. It's rarely "us" vs. "them" because the world is much more complex than that. If you really want to unite people with different ideas, you better prepare to destroy lots of your most cherished beliefs. And that's what people hate. They are married to a specific vision of the world, because that vision is what gives meaning to their lives and their ideas. And that is the goal: To find a better idea that gives everyone equally a more positive belief that ends with all of those divisions. As Alan Moore said (paraphrasing, because I don't remember the original quote): "Do not think of what may offend your audience. Think of what may inspire them... focus on the positive aspects of the story...". I see fiction as a way to explore a complex topic. As a way to delve into ideas, and to let the audience choose what idea is the right one. Sometimes it will be obvious, but some other times it may inspire debate... but in the end, the most important idea should be one where we can all agree. Not a mere political statement, but an universal truth.

I dont mind giving more diversity into comics at all. I mean Marvel was always the most diverse universe out there anyway, considering the time it happened to be a thing! X-Men is like 50/50 female and it has quite a few heros of different race or sexual orientation. Its just cringey when they make social politics their main goal. Its great as sidestories, worldbuilding details, etc. But The secret of a good political story is to give questions and letting the audience to choose the answer for themselves. Letting them feel like they had all the possible info from both sides and chose the good side even tho they still understand the other side. What is happening with political themes nowadays is they basically tell you the answer, without letting you think for yourself and overall make a statement that if you dont agree, you are a shitty person. So the increased diversity is not a problem at all. Its 21st century, we should be quite more opened than we were few decades back. But they just do it completely wrong way. Nobody want to be preached. Everyone needs to have the choice to choose wrong side! Otherwise the right side has no value.

In my opinion Comicsgate is correct, but Anti-Comicsgate does have some good points. Comics should be more entertaining without a lot of bias. Comics can be great tool for politics and educate kids and teens on current issues, but that shouldn't be its driving force. I believe unbiased stories and entertainment can bring people together a lot better than forcing agendas and beliefs which can bring up issues and cause conflict. The danger in using comics for politics, is that people focus more on preaching than telling an good story. This can not only ruin a good series (cough, Last Jedi, cough), it could also chase people away from comics. I feel comics gate and the anti-comicsgate should work together and help improve their craft. All in all, while comic writers are entitled to their own opinion and can create whatever they want, whether they are right are wrong in their reasoning is irrelevant... unless they rip off other people's content and spread forced agendas.

Here's my take politics should reinforce your story. Not the other way around. Take the Original Gundam and SDF Macross. Both have an anti war message but each pull from different times. Gundam was made by people who have memories of WW2 and reconstruction and have a drastic complete pacifist tone in its anti war message. SDF Macross meanwhile has the same message but comes with a caviate: there will be times when you need tools of war to defend yourself( as noted by Kamjin's rebellion in the last 9 episodes of the series). Compare these to Star Trek discovery or the new star wars movies.

I somewhat agree and disagree with you I think the problem with Anti-Comicsgate, actually overall Anti-entertaimentgate overall, is that their belief is due to biasm and that they fight for enforcing THEIR ideology into entertaiment media, while ignoring that it was a method used by horriable people and ideologies such as Nazi Germany to utlize entertaiment media to sort of brainwash the youth, I believe that while yes entertaiment media can be quite effective Nd edjucatioaal, it should not fall into forcing what is virtues, values and/or biased ideologies as a qouta.

I feel like there is room for both. Whenever I am brought in on these conversations, it's always either or. Why can't it be "and"? Comics are fun and can be political? Everything is a balance and we need both. Lots of people forget that in his time Stan wrote lots of controversial stories and actively fought against the Comics Code Authority to get those in. It was the wonder of Fantastic Four that made him popular, but the nuance of political isolation that made the X-Men. Without either we would miss out on so much: God loves Man kills, Civil War, the Court of Owls, Secret Invasion, etc. In short including the other doesn't automatically compromise the other aspect, it's all in the hands of the minds that craft it. It's only compromised when we think one matters and the other doesn't While I may not totally agree with you. You have gained a sub in me bro 👍

Well, the "Comicsgate" position is story FIRST. If there is a story to tell then the political elements should integrate more naturally, and it is less likely to be preachy or one-sided (although there is a chance that it still could be). If there is an agenda to propagate and build a story around, it is usually evident in the story and in a bad way... The ability to show nuance or empathize with various opinions tends to be restricted or non-existent in politics-first properties, because too much empathy and nuance waters down the "message" that they are trying to push.
@endless3cho
@endless3cho 5 жыл бұрын
Yeah, Comicsgate, at least for me, is story first but if you want to make it current affairs then find a great narrative to read into the story that doesn't come off like I'm watching 24-hour news. I don't want politics removed, I just want the story to matter more than the writer's rage against whatever is going on that week on Twitter or something. It's obvious that even average ppl don't want to feel the preach coming on in every single issue.

I'm new to the comicsgate thing, but i write stories in my spare time. I've never thought of themes or messages when i write my stories, only the story ahead of me and i've had my english and theology major family member find themes after the story was written. I remember a creative writing classmate who did basically the opposite in our playwriting course. The stuff he did basically beat you over the head with his messages. I think themes can be subconcious for some. The aim is to tell something that the majority reading or watching will love (a good story).

And whenever I come to those final words from you and Stan, I find myself tearing up with pride in what I do and in how I strive to live up to the heights this art can reach. I think Meyer hit the nail on the head with the statement, "Comics used to be made for smart kids, but now they're made for dumb adults." Talking about the Black af comic, and how you had to gloss over a lot of polemics, I think the quote really applies. If the author was taking his bizarre worldview and telling a story with that lens it'd be one thing, but he has to pack the comic with heavy handed preaching to make sure there's no ambiguity or room for interpretation for those reading. Dude can't even trust the reader to infer the message he wants without spelling it out. There's gonna be a market for overtly political material on any medium, but what is being argued at the root is the hijacking of cultural icons and touchstones to signal boost a message to an audience that could never be earned on merit. The saving grace of ComicsGate is the barrier to entry is far less than for other mediums where nerd culture has been converged. This means that new blood can enter, and with their sales/earnings tallied together I imagine they can make those holding mainstream comics hostage look really, really stupid.

Fantasy will show you what will happen to you when you take up a quest and for good or ill. SciFi will ask and explore a question with great significance, but will never provide the answer. Political works outline a problem of compatibility between groups or methods or principles and it's all in the reconciliation of this problem that determines whether they're propaganda or not. Revealing and exploring a political problem is the SciFi route and if done truthfully, is neutral -even if unnerving. The fantasy route will demonstrate what it takes to solve the problem and NOT what the solution must necessarily be. It's only when the solution is preached to you, when a particular perspective or interpretation or means and ends is presented as the moral good and righteous action that you're now dealing with propaganda. The reason these become terrible stories is because they do not honor the agency of the reader. The don't engage with the reader as an autonomous individual whom they will attempt to expose ideas and perspectives and experiences to -to allow the reader to see things through their own lens, their own interpretation. Instead, the good, the moral, the right ideas are forced onto the reader, ignoring their input. So now the reader is left to consider only whether they agree with what the author is saying AND NOT if they empathize with the characters such that they can understand and sympathize with their perspective. Which may or may not be that of the author. Point being, the story and characters of propaganda no longer become vessels for our own self insertion such that we can come to understand and empathize with their perspective and problems. Rather, they become vessels of authorial dictation, telling us what is and is not true and what is and is not moral. So no longer is the story about imparting hard lessons and old wisdom, of what can/will happen if we do X, or what to expect when we engage in Y, and how to manage with these universal experiences (causality and the human condition). Instead, we're simply exposed to an opinion piece masked by means of storytelling. We're told not what can/will happen, but rather what the author wants to happen. What they want to bring about. How they want us to see the world. Which reveals the egotism at the root of the issue and all propaganda, frankly. Which is then revealed, without all the layers of literary critique required to find and demonstrate it, in their fucking tweets. In the personality of such authors. Which is why they're all so horrible. The irony is that if they had paid attention to the questions raised in SciFi and the lessons (heroes journey) of Fantasy, then they would have known that propaganda like this doesn't work. Hence the backlash. But then again, why would we suppose that they'd have ever cared much for stories in the first place? After all, they don't write them.

I think it proves that politics can be in there but it needs to be more mild and the story should take priority. When the anti-comicsgate people say "politics have always been in comics" that's type of comics they are talking about although the politics of old were usually along the lines of "Be good to each other" and "Everyone is deserving of respect even if they are different". Their biggest problem comes in execution. Instead of giving someone a inspiration to think about a subject and do their own research to come to their own conclusions they think that they have to tell people how to think. It's not just in comics either. The subtlety seems to be missing in every medium. It's the difference between a nudge and a full body push. That's a big reason why everything is so divisive. It's designed to anger one group and appease another instead of being welcoming to all comers with a little extra bit in the back for the ones that want to see it. I personally prefer no politics all together but if it has to be in there I'd prefer it be something I could overlook and still enjoy.

I think that the most important thing to do as a writer is to be honest with yourself and just write with good, honest, fun. When you are writing while having fun, the reader will know that and feel the fun as well. It's somewhere within the flow of words where anyone can sense whether a story was made just as a chore or a bland frankenstein construct of tropes, or with genuine passion.
