Garnt is right. With a lot of people it is something just so happens to make them happy in their darkest times and they start to use it as a crutch to be happy and eventually associate it with their happiness itself. It happened to me in what was my darkest year up to that point, for reference I found out my fiance cheated on me and kicked me out then my mom died only months later. I became literally obsessed with a few things and it genuinely started to rule my life. Those things being Vocaloid, VRChat and drinking. One vocaloid stood out to me. The Chinese vocaloid Zhiyu Moke released only months after my mom passed and I became obsessed him to a concerning degree. I still enjoye thoss things massively still, but it doesnt dictate my happiness anymore. Using things that make you happy as a bit of a crutch for a while is okay, but when it gets to the point of controlling your life it becomes an issue.

Im partially with you, but what makes me "mediocrely different" (tbh) is even though my life was generally hunky-dory, my childhood obsession with Vocaloid songs and anime/osts was motivated by extreme fantasizing of a fictional world where Im the center of a universe with an evolved humanity using technology that my favorite scifi animes expressed. Basically even though the world was pretty alright for me, I was more into an imaginary one that wouldve made existence more fun.

To answer your question Connor about how people get to that point, it's common in people with ADHD to have hyperfixactions(aka being addicted or obsessed). Getting attach to any series,activity,life style, etc can also be used as a coping skill, like you said people find this stuff at the right time and it helps them get through life.

I don't think Connor is the literal definition of "obsessed" with Jojo. He's still pretty young, and has a little more disposable income than the average 25 year old. It's not that strange for him to decorate a room with merch from an anime he really likes. It def takes a unique mix of things to become like the Barbie girl, and memeing on the guy aside, Connor and Jojo is not that, and will never be that.
@komarunaegi7460

Man, but the way you phrase that just sounds depressing. *I’m* 25. But the way a lot of people talk about these things makes it sound as if only younger people are allowed to be that eccentric or have that kind of fun, otherwise they’re crazy or weird or clinging to their youth in some midlife crisis or something. Not that you *are* implying that, but it’s just how it feels reading that type of sentiment from people online. In some cases yeah, older people are genuinely struggling with those types of issues or have some sort of unhealthy obsession or addiction, but can’t people of any age feel free to express their interests in whatever they want if they’re generally responsible enough about it monetarily, without intruding on anyone or interfering with their other life priorities?

It also depends on whether or not someone has ADHD, Autism, or another type of mental health attribute. Because while I can only speak for myself as a Tomboy ADHD chick I can tell you that special interests can be random and last for random amounts of time sometimes lasting from one day to ten years. But when someone has a hyperfixation it's something that they're truly passionate about on a personal level because it's something they can always go back to for comfort after hard days or work towards as a career. But even our hyperfixation can be stalled if we're not in the right state of mind or have enough stimulation in our minds to truly get motivated. That's why stimulants work different for people with ADHD and Autism compared to someone who doesn't have either.

Ikr I have ADHD too and I would describe my experience similarly. I remember seeing something about how collecting a ton of information about something, and being a bit obsessed with it isn’t always just being a fan, sometimes it can be an anxiety response. So to answer Connor’s question, maybe what predisposes you is if this type of behavior is a part of your individual anxiety or trauma response to something in your life or childhood

Yo, this is very informative and helpful. Honestly, I can understand why some people develop obsessions or addictions. Like you guys said, someone could've had a childhood where it was all work and no play and now they collect plush toys or something like that as an adult. It can be very different for a lot of people. But, I definitely understand the points. My dad had a terrible childhood. He retired at an early age and now he can do all the fun things he missed out on when he was a kid. Playing video games, collecting figures, etc. I'm so happy that he's happier now

as someone who you could argue is proper obsessed with bts it just makes me happy. i was going through a horrible time back in 2018 and someone told me about them. i knew who they were because my sister liked them a few years back so i decided to give them a chance. this might sound a bit cliche or weird but when i listen to them, watch their shows, tune into their livestreams, etc, i feel better. the boys portraying a positive message while encouraging us fans to not give up, no matter how hard life gets, it made my days worth it. i would say i was definitely depressed for about 2 years and i haven't been feeling depressed for that long since i became a fan. i don't have money to spend on them but if i did, i definitely would. i don't wake up for them anymore, i wake up for myself. i would say im similar to connor with this. i talk about them lots, i own merch, i make fan art and fan content, but i also have other interests and a life outside of them. sorry if this doesn't make sense lol

Obsession in psychology is defined as an intrusive unshakeable thought that lingers around and the person are unable to control it, so by this definition yes when you’re watching jojo, and you are really into the show sure, it’s normal. However, like most people we watch other anime as well, and we crave for new shows right. But if only Jojo sticks in your mind and affect your daily lives for a period of time then it may eventually becomes unhealthy. And buying or collecting stuff it’s just a compulsive behaviour of that thought so in shows like what Connor says, basically it’s a form of OCD.

8:35 - The process of addiction is quite hard to explain, even more so when i don't specialise in it, but the best way to sum it up is - its all about dopamine and serotonin. People get addicted based on their body wanting more and more, by process making the 'individual' crave more of the thing(s) that give it that extra bit of dopamine//serotonin. You can see it with everyday mundane things such as: coffee, fatty foods, meat, SUGAR - there was a study on sugar if i remember correctly, that looked at how people would pick sugary things rather than more nutritious things, based only on the feeling of satisfaction they will get after eating that piece of candy. There's other factors, but this is the base of it. -Psychology Student

I’d venture to guess that the reason Japan has so little yet such fucked up crime is likely due to a lower rate of poverty therefore less crimes committed out of financial desperation. I could be way off base and I’m not very informed but that would be my best guess based off of crime patterns in my country.

It's like 0 or 100. As thy told to conform all their lives and once have their own lives do a complete 180 (their repressed feelings come out as a every person needs to express themselves one way or another.) As they want to feel something and experience life to their fullest or be hella passionate in a niche things/creativity as were always expected to do be like everyone else, just a number, not an outlier. Stand out n be who you want to be, just make sure that your aren't hurting anyone else while doing what you enjoy. Go HAM

1:57 - What first comes to mind is the Attachment Types study. Especially the Type B attachment which is very prone to be possessive or obsessive. Of course the study's limitations is that it doesn't explain EVERYTHING and that for what Connor's referring to is more behaviour than personality, which doesnt fit with the study, because it's not focused on behaviour, but rather on personality. Even though it still holds in this instant. Possibly, it's due to the way people were raised and how they developed certain tendencies, for example: being more enabled to continue certain actions and form certain behaviour(s) such as the 'Barbie example', would be a main indicator for it. Everyone has preferences, likes, kinks, tastes, but the only thing that separates the obsessive tendencies from being realised is pursuing them AND when you have the money, power, ability to pursue it/them - THEN it becomes "problem" in question. -Psychology Student
@izwinnie2570

I would suggest looking into studies that focus on attachment and behavioural tendencies (aka personality lol), there's research based on results from countries. I checked some Japanese (research) articles and what it seems is that most Japanese score highly on the Type A at about 62%, but let me be clear - results that show such results could be easily falsified or fake, ESPECIALLY when the country is VERY FOCUSED on the way you put yourself out to the world and just on LOOKS and IMAGE. Take the laws for example (defamation of character being a perfect example), they speak a lot about the country as a whole. Other than that Type B was ranked at 36%! SO, that speaks for itself.

I know I'm late for a comment, but, being a psychologist, I can tell you that there are many theories (scientific ones) to explain addiction. In order to simplify it, I can say that an addiction is something that takes you away the option to say "no" to a particular thing and that this thing is making your, and people around you, life worse. This particular mechanism is both physical (on chemical level) and psycho-social. Trying to explain it in more depth, but without being boring, we can say that most of it could be found (as for the theory I personally embrace) on the meaning people gives to things and the link that they create between the object of the addiction and something on their reality construction. For example, most of the smokers don't like the first cigarette, but they continue to smoke and eventually became addicted to this particular process. Smoking, as it is drinking alcohol, is both a social and a chemical experience, so, smoking starts "to be part of a group", "to be like someone I respect", "to look like I'm more mature", ... ... At the same time gives a chemical input to the brain and trigger some sensations. When a social meaning is given to something and this something have a deep relation with our reality than we havve the seeds of addiction, it turns in real addiction the moment the freedom to say "no" to the addicting objecto/sensation/emotion is taken away form us. So I can't have an hour long lession without taking a smoking pause. Which means that without a strong significance invested into the object and with the ability of saying "no" it's not strictly possible to speak about addiction. This to say that many addiction are treated changing the object of the addiction itself (heroine to methadone for example) because the chemical structure is similar, but one is medically controlled, this way people remains addicted but just to another thing while trying to work on the meanings that people gives to the object (while still using medical procedures) gives better results giving back the freedom to say no to the object itself because the way reality is constructed (for the single person being treated) is changed too within the significance given to the substance in this case. Well, sorry for the giga explanation, it's a super complex matter and would require to open many topics at once to be, even in the slightest , treated in a digestible way. 😅

Japan needs teleworking, as many people do perish due to overworking (karoshi.) As they many often will sleep at the office since they are given piles and piles of work and are expected to do. And if the boss says they must stay and work, they shall because gotta respect the boss, as he has seniority and could fire them in a heartbeat. Also, man salary men hardly get to see their families as either working at office at late nights or arrive home but then have to sleep as they are tired. So, if more people employ teleworking, there will be less accounts of Karoshi, less stress, and time to see their family. That way their kids can spend time with their absent mother or father or both.
