More schools and city parks are switching from grass to synthetic turf fields for soccer, football, or just about any outdoor sport. But are these fields safe?
College soccer coach Amy Griffin has been asking questions about artificial turf, and something called crumb rubber which is used to fill the gaps between artificial grass blades and soften the field. These tiny rubber pellets are made from recycled tires, and The American Cancer Society says some chemicals found in tires could be carcinogenic over time.
Griffin has compiled a list of mostly soccer players who have come down with various forms of cancer. She believes more testing should be done to find out if the rubber in artificial turf fields is exposing athletes to cancer causing chemicals. Right now there is no evidence linking cancer to crumb rubber or synthetic turf fields.
