Although I’m Tejano, I grew up speaking almost no Spanish. Many of my white friends knew more Spanish words than I did but I pushed myself to learn and put myself in situations where I had no other choice than to speak Spanish and now I’m almost fluent. My Spanish speaking employees don’t believe me when I tell them I started learning Spanish about 15 years ago

Great that you learned Spanish! I hear from so many people that fail to learn their "mother tongue" when they are young and wish they had because I'd so hard to learn as an adult. But you did it!

I’m wondering if you ever take questions from viewers to ask your future interview videos. For example people who are working in real estate there they are seeing the prices go up on rent and I never hear them being asked if they are partly because of that. I remember the days when I could rent a great apartment right by the beach in Puerto Vallarta for $90 a month. That same apartment is now $350 a month it’s still tiny Very noisy bar across the street and sometimes way too windy to open windows. Did I caused the rents to go up there or was it all of the neighbors that moved in that were from the US Canada and Europe? I also wonder when I’m renting a place in Mexico if I’m displacing a local that has to move further to the fringe to be able to afford an apartment or house.

I'm always open to suggestions. Gentrification is a tough topic. I've yet to meet someone who can give an educated answer. It's usually a combination of: 1) it's supply and demand. Anywhere in high demand will see gentrification 2) in areas where Mexicans rent their homes (Condesa, Roma) it's more of a problem than in areas where they own. Mexico has a high homeownership rate. 3) If you're renting something that a local may want to rent, it's different than buying a penthouse in a new condo that was built for the gringo market. 4) Wealthy Mexicans are a bigger problem than expats. 5) Expats are the source of gentrification. I'm planning to interview a researcher, but she's not an economist. She's studying the perceptions. If you know an economist studying this, I'd love to interview them!

I mean : what are the different activities available around the Capital in order to always discover something new ?

Thanks for sharing Francois! I'm sure La Paz has changed a lot in the last 10 years - it's changed a bunch in the last 3 since we arrived. As to boredom. My wife and I still work full time, so we never run out of things to do in our spare time. Pickleball is a big activity here. As is dog rescue / fostering. Both can take up a lot of time. Lots of other great volunteer activities. The beaches are wonderful and lots of folks go to Tecolote often - it's La Paz's version of a party beach. Still way laid back, but you can have lunch and drinks - and meet up with friends. Lots of dinners with friends. Hobbies - I have a friend restoring an old GTO in his garage. Another spends a lot of time in the library / historical center researching for a book.

My experience is radically different from Jake's since I'm not at the income level he's at and I moved to Puebla State in a colonia far more affordable than the rich gringo retirees' preferred living destinations. The cities/colonias in and around the area i live are far more humble and pure working class. I'd not recommend my neck of the woods to a person like Jake or the presenter of the video; upper-'middle class' or rich types need not apply here (parts of San Pedro/San Andres Cholula would be the exception; quite bougie friendly in those areas). Also, the rich retiree areas popular here don't seem like the authentic Mexico to my mind. They've been modified over time to better suit the rich gringo and are far more expensive to call home than other parts more inland where you get a much more real taste of Mexico, daily life, and the folks that live there. I never needed a dating app thank the gods; I ended up meeting and have been dating the aunt of one of my friends for a medium minute now. The dating/cultural rules are something you'd better learn with a quickness btw; you'll get told quickly when you screw up and the women are quite passonate with their expressiveness. My Spanish is decent for a gringo and it helps that the girlfriend doesn't speak english plus, in the colonia i live in and the colonia next to mine where i walk to play basketball most evenings/nights English is ultra-scarce if not non-existent. (The profanity/slang on the canchas whether it's basketból or futbol will crisp your ears if all you're familiar with is more of the polite textbook variety or limited tourist Spanish.)

How about don’t bring the “dating” confusing culture from US. Most ppl have bf and gf with the goal to marry. This is what scares me from US. All the confusion they have there w men and women “dating” I hope good women in Mex don’t get affected by confusing American men. American men “only what to have fun” 🤦🏻‍♀️
@alexaristed2534
@alexaristed2534 10 ай бұрын
I beg to differ. In my opinion the “only want to have fun” statement applies to all men, not just American men. There are players in every culture and every gender. Let’s be fair! People need to sift through all the sand to get to that precious grain of gold-whatever that may be for each particular person

I’m near 70, I find Mexicans easier to talk to. Maybe because I lived in the Southwestern US, and hung out with Latinos. Come to think of it, most of my relationships have been with Latinos. I am not a gringo trying to “be Mexican”. I’m just used to the culture. Even in Europe, I met more men than I really wanted to. I had a Czech bf for my first venture, and they are more active in their letting you know they are interested. Not aggressive, they just let you know. American men my age go after barely adult women. And even if they don’t, they are overbearing and play too many mind games. Same with American women. I am LGBTQ. It’s different when you are bisexual/queer, but not too much
