Highly unlikely to be accurate for downhill as calculations based on elevation, speed and power through the pedals don't account for force generated (and work done!) through any of the movements at play during downhill riding: pumping, jumping, cornering, smashing through rock gardens etc. Heart rate doesn't get as high either because the work is largely done through anaerobic pathways - and I don't think sports sciencists have developed formula for anaerobic work based on the types of data available to cycling computer / sports watch designers. Anaerobic energy expenditure is best measured using blood lactate readings. Alas and alack.

This test is only telling the half of the story! Your body is burning more calories, than your powermeter can measure. If you start an activity on the garmin it would have counted WAY more calories on the downhill session because your heartrate and effort are counting too! Despite of that, i like that video and have deep respect of your capabilities in endurance and downhill technique!

I sincerely doubt it. Throwing a bike around down a proper DH track is exhausting. Comparing that to the average watts held for the XC ride. I'd say no competition DH would win hands down if you could measure actual calories burnt and not just the conversion equation from the watts applied to the pedals.
@ChrisCapoccia

Power meter wouldn't, but heart rate would. Pushups are hardly worth any calories
@uldi1s
@uldi1s Жыл бұрын
Whilst I agree that XC is the best calorie burner, I have to say the test is not really capturing the calories burned in DH, as you're only measuring pedal force (and there is much less) If there was a way to measure the calories burnt with your upper body it would be better. But it's a moot point, XC is definitely the bigger calorie burner. Now, Enduro... 🤔

Well, that totally explains how I’ve lost virtually lost no weight on MY e-MTB. I am now using much lower settings and pedaling up the hill. Using the throttle was just too much fun. After a year and a half, 1800 miles, the novelty is wearing off. But at the very least, I’ve been active...but hey, I’m 70, and still going downhill fast. No that much physically... Oh the beer...

What was the avg HR in DH (or did I miss it)? Maybe a calculation purely on HR would have been more accurate, since the wattage on the pedals in DH was probably rather small, but this plays a big factor in the calculation of these devices.

100% spot on. Avg hr 140 for Xc and 132 for downhill per video. To me it clearly shows that downhill can burn calories. The power pedals screwed up what would have otherwise been a cool vid.

Nice comparison, like this stuff! To get a good comparison you would need the pedal power, the power applied to the handlebars and the heartrate. Heart rate + powermeter in the pedals is the go between. May try that next time .

I am sorry, the video was fun, but nothing more. Because of the way the measurement was done - on the pedal - there is a clear bias towardsvall the activity that uses the pedal actively. I would suggest, that you either have a different measurement method (dk, maybe it can be done via blood pressure or so) or add a strain gauge to the handle bars to also quantify the needed work there. I am pretty sure, that a DH WC track at a solid speed also needs alot of calories. You will never use as much as on a 2h xc ride, but i guess the gap would be much smaller than what was measured here.

I wonder how much quicker you'd have hit 1000cal burned by pedaling the Mega on the XC loop instead of the featherweight XC bike? 5000cal would be crazy, I remember when GCN did 10,000cal and it took them something like 20 hours of road riding. I would expect something like 8-10 hours of XC riding to burn 5000 on a MTB. The 80km of downhill is kinda interesting since for me that's about what I do during a full day at the bike park

Well there is a mental aspect to this as well. XC is just pedaling, pedaling, pedaling. It's all about fitness and endurance. Downhill...what I've noticed about the steeper stuff, as in more than a 10% descent, is that you really need quick reflexes and reaction times. Like really quick, like Matrix Neo quick. As in you have to be intuitive and anticipate the lines and flow several seconds ahead of where you want to go, even if those are around the next turn and you can't even see them! You have to instantly plan on what to do after glancing at the terrain ahead. Because that terrain is going to flash by a couple of seconds later. In some ways you don't even have time to think about what the plan is, you just do it instinctively. Either you are born to ride downhill or you are not. Personally I'm not a great downhill rider, but I've gotten a taste of how it really can be and wow, you really have to mentally be in the zone to survive it. Steep downhill is infinitely harder to do than pedaling on relatively flat terrain. XC...hey that's great that they are in very good shape, I wish I was in that good of shape, but downhill requires real talent.

Very illustrative video! Will share with those who believe that HR calories estimates are not good enough for "such big workouts" they had... 120 cals worth :). BTW, that burger has more than 1000 calories. The best dieting strategy is even more thousands years old: first burn calories, then replenish them. Going to a party? Skip the day and even morning meals. And please don't refer to pro cyclists carb loading, they are pro, hence chaperoning by specialists. When they think that they are not being fed enough and "rebel", the nutritionist (baby sitters) tell "It's a rest day and we know how many calories you had spent".

For all the DH lot they just stand on their pedals going down and walk/minibus/chairlift/gondola back up.... also if racing in XC (or CX) its easier to jump off, shoulder a bike and jump on if needs be with lycra shorts rather than "hanging off the arse fashion baggies" that will foul you and catch on the back of the seat....

In that comparision, proper Enduro would easily win. I do roughly 1000kcal in 1:30 hours when I'm turboing on my Enduro on my local trails.

You better bet you can ride a downhill trail and have heart rate spikes of 170BPM without ever pedaling, there's no way you're not burning a ton of calories through that.

Liked the video... Anyone else fed up with the Gambling ads??? Does anyone know how to not get the Gambling ads? I find them incredibly dishonest and of no use to anyone. Shame on GMBN for allowing them.

Definitely not the best science. Those pedals don't track your heart rate or the effort needed to keep a bike stable downhill. They just track power, cadence and distance.

I think for me xc would be a better way of burning calories than downhill cuz mostly on downhill your mostly just descending with the help of gravity. But with xc your doing both pedalling and descending so your exerting more effort on xc :D

Pedaling your bike burns more calories than not pedaling it - who’d have thought it?!
