I really thought the moral of the story at the end was gonna be "always have a fire extinguisher in your fake lambo". Upon farther reflection I'll gladly settle for "make sure the doors unlock from the inside". Thanks for another great story.

Two things. 1. A 1960 Cadillac in BMW brown made me envision the car in the Chuck Berry song Oh Carol... “starting walking toward a coffee colored Cadillac” thank you for this. 2. If you are in a state of panic and cannot get out of a car, break the glass. I was going through a horrible time two years ago and got fed up with the wind noise from my ex-wife’s Mercury Mountaneer in the windshield. While riding in the passenger seat I kicked the windshield and broke it instantly without intention. Kicking out is a lot easier than kicking in.

Re: engine backfire through carb. I’ve had a bunch of old carb’d v8 cars and this has happened enough times to not be surprised. Have done the milk jug with gasoline gravity feeding the carb to get the engine running to move the car. You know, dumb stuff like that. No issues. About 5 years back, I buy a 60’s muscle car - someone swapped the engine at some point and it never quite ran right. Had it parked in my garage - which has a bedroom of my house over it. The garage is part of the house structure. So one day, the car isn’t starting, I’m tinkering, and BAM - huge backfire through the carb, kisses the garage door that was open. F that. Called around, found a shop to put in a used LS engine with factory fuel injection - best decision ever. Cost quite a bit in the end, but that car started up like a 4 year old Chevy, which is what was powering it. Wasn’t about to burn down my house messing with someone else’s botched project.

6:54 Those open element foam air filters are a _great_ way to start an engine fire and burn a car down. I knew exactly where this was going as soon as I saw that thing. A single decent backfire and that thing is going up in a hurry. So, a note for everybody out there: If you have the choice between one of those or nothing, chose nothing.

I once had an engine backfire with one of those and it instantly fell apart and was sucked into the intake. I had to pull the plugs and vacuum it out.

@@MichaelBEarl You're lucky that's all that happened. I really am flabbergasted that Edelbrock still sells them. They're even worse than those glass fuel filters. But... There's no handbook that comes with hotrodding. I guess we all have to burn down a car or two before we learn. 🤣

@@TheBrokenLife what do you mean? what about paper like filters? I have a paper like filter on my carbed carb and you are making my worry
@TheBrokenLife
@TheBrokenLife 2 жыл бұрын
@@miralemnermina142 The filter on that car, unless my eyes are going wonky, is an open foam element. I mean that literally. It's "sponge rubber" like you would find used for packing material or memory foam pillows, it's _highly_ flammable, and it's _maybe_ 2" away from open fuel flowing in the air on a carb. So, if there is a backfire, actual fire (combined with more gas, usually) is coming back out of the carb and setting that foam on fire. Paper filters fall into 2 categories (well... only 2 for the purposes of my Ted Talk here): round (almost always for a carb) or rectangular (EFI... or a "cone" filter if you're into that). The round paper filters for carbs almost always have a steel mesh around them exactly so they can't just blow apart into a giant fireball. The paper is also way less flammable than the foam. I have never seen one of these burst into flames from anything short of something that was going to set a car on fire anyhow. The rectangular "EFI" filters can either have mesh or not, but usually they're so far up the intake tract that a huge backfire is more likely to pop the plumbing off (the intake pipes) than to transmit a fireball to them. Plus, EFI is insanely less likely to backfire than a carbureted vehicle to begin with. And, the paper is still relatively hard to light. And... Just to put out there, the worst case is actually any sort of K&N or "washable" filter. They're literally oily rags. On something EFI, yeah, maybe, but I wouldn't run one with a carb (especially those filter top air cleaners). So, paper is fine.
