One thing I never hear mentioned about F-Zero X is how well implemented the rumble support is. The intensity ramps up subtly as you start to lose traction and you can tell when you're going to lose control just from the vibration level. It's one of the only games where I've found rumble makes a tangible improvement to the gameplay.
@MerkhVision

Ooh I know exactly the type of thing u mean, that feeling is crucial for immersion in racing games. Forza Motorsport 4 on Xbox 360 did an excellent job with that as well. You could actually tell how much traction u had based on how the tires reacted to the different driving surfaces. That’s how Forza won me over when I used to be a big Gran Turismo fan instead

I miss this series. It is very distinct from other racing games, and even other anti-gravity racing games. The absence of items or weapons puts the focus entirely on the driving skills of the player, and even the attacks have to be well executed. I'm not that good at it, but racing in this game (and F-Zero GX) is very satisfying. It's such a shame Nintendo is content with graverobbing F-Zero's features to add them in Mario Kart. Also, it might be a small aspect of the game, but I love the characters in F-Zero X. Each one cooler/"badass-er"/sillier than the other, it's like a fighting game's roster!
@duffman18

Try out Fast RMX for Switch. In the absence of an actual F-Zero game, this is one that is brilliant and has the gameplay of f-zero and the gravity bending of racing around a tube track and all that, and the sense of speed is unmatched I think. It's the closest thing to a modern version of the n64 and Gamecube F-Zero games and I don't know how they manage to make it so good looking and so fast at the same time, on a handheld device, but there you go, there it is. It's just a lot of fun

@@duffman18 Oh, I tried that one, in fact it was one of three games I got when I bought my Switch. I liked it, and it's closer to F-zero than most game I've seen (in particular the Hero mode), but... its not quite the same. The ship's design and lack of pilots reminds me more of Wipeout, and the color-switching didn't work that well IMO. Still, kudos to Shin'en Multimedia, their games are very impressive.

I disagree, It's much easier to get rid of other racers in GX, the side attack is really easy to use and powerful, you have to actually race well to win in X so it's harder trying to get rid of rivals slows you down too much and is more risky. However the GX story mode is the more difficult than anything else in the series...

exactly, X is far better. The vehicles actually have momentum behind them, drifting and DTD's add a whole level of fun. GX is a completely different game based on the same characters, the way the machines handle isn't even comparable.

@@tj1622 because it had Mario in the cover. Both the kids and your grandma know who he is and would rush to buy the game. And once you have played it as a kid you can never let go because of nostalgia 😂 (Just look how Pokemon keeps selling more and more despite the games decreasing in polish lately). At the end of the day Mario Kart is perfect for casual fun play but has enough mechanics for people to sini hours into it and has mascots everywhere, so like Smash Bros it's in the perfect place to become a timless top seller.

It was stunning to see the game run so smoothly at 60fps, since it was very rare to see console games to do that at the time, especially since games running at 60fps were more common on PC and arcade games. I liked the track design, the wide variety of vehicles, and the gameplay most of all.

Yeah, one of the reasons the game wasn't such a hit is that these were the days when gaming magazines were at their peak. Most people saw still shots of the game and decided the graphics looked bare and simplistic. You had to see it in motion to realize that they'd traded graphical detail for speed and a rock solid framerate. And it was a good trade.

Yeah, this is a pretty nice game :3 I actually did not know about the track randomizer! I guess I never played far enough to unlock it, so that gives me incentive to revisit it again :) Thank you for the heads-up!

Hugely underrated game imo. This is actually my second favorite N64 game (after Ocarina) and easily one of my favorite racing games ever. Never really got into GX.

F-Zero X is still by far my favorite top 3 Nintendo 64 titles. I don’t feel F-Zero series gets the same recognition as other Nintendo exclusive titles. The F-Zero AX Arcade machines for the NGC F-Zero GX title are pretty rare. I liked that the data from your NGC card can be used for your custom vehicles at the arcade machine.

Was thinking of buying this, had no clue you made a video for it the other day. Ive actually never played any of the 3d f zero games. Just the 1st game and the gba games. And i loved every last one of em. Got an n64 this past month, and this game isnt too expensive.

I still remember the very first time I got to play this at the Toys R Us that was in the Holyoke Mall in Massachusetts.....flying off the track on Big Blue 2 while my Dad was standing in the background saying, "I expected it was gonna be faster!" and I was like "Are you kidding? That was awesome!" Such a great game

I was gonna say something about TX, but you answered that. I wouldn't mind seeing you Branch out more like this. It's hard for me to think of other places for you to go with SNES, so I could only imagine how hard it is for you.

This was the first game I owned. My older brother and sister had saved up some money and bought it for me for Christmas. It was pretty mindblowing to play a 3D game that moved that fast. I vividly remember going in a pipe for the first time and my little babby brain just melted. It also acted as a entry point for me to discover heavy metal. Really great memories. Also, gonna be pedantic and point out that F-Zero X is not the only N64 game to run at 60fps. There were definitely more of them like Yoshi's Story and Mischief Makers. Most of these are 2D games or sprite-based, but there were also a few 3D ones in there like Mortal Kombat 4 and Smash Bros(at least when playing fewer than 3 players).

The F-Zero series was brilliant in its use of textures to really make you feel like you were going at insane speeds. The circles on the sides of the tracks were a major contributor to this. The only other games that gave me the same sense of ludicrous speed (“they’ve gone to plaid!”) that F-Zero has is the Wipeout series.

I loved playing this game so much. The battle mode is a bit underrated, and deserves a little more love, IMO. You could double tap the shoulder buttons to perform a spin attack to the left or right which, if timed properly, will launch your opponents sideways into the walls or off the track. Basic, but incredibly satisfying to execute, immediatley yeeting rival cars out of the frame at lightning speed. Amazing.

This was a damn good game. My favorite track was one of the simplest, with the O shape. The sense of speed with the music (i think it was Dream Chaser) was so good. Sometimes I would go to such a high speed that the car would jump off the race track on its own. Good times

As unusual as it may sound, Fzero X doesn't have a MIDI soundtrack, but rather very compressed mono mp3 tracks (stereo on the Japan-only n64DD's Extension Kit edition). You can change the tracks with a but of hacking!

This FZX was all about speed and fast paced gameplay, even in 2020, this still a relevant game to play. I was quite surprised how well that game aged... really. I even (personally) find it aged better than F Zero GX in it's one way.
