Facts about fragrance... and some opinions, too.
Fragrance in skincare is one of the top argued about topic. Some have called fragrance "the worst ingredient in skincare". Well, considering some (now banned) skincare ingredients had been known to cause cancer... I'm going to flat out say, no, fragrances are not the worst ingredients in skincare.
The bottom line is, those with inflammatory conditions should stay away from fragrance. Those without inflammatory conditions like eczema, rosacea, psoriasis, grade 2+ acne, or allergies have no reason to worry against fragrances.
I also want to note, that many people will believe they have a fragrance sensitivity when in actuality, they are sensitizing their own skin by using the wrong products, or the right products in the wrong way.
KNOWN ALLERGENS LIST:

I've included some thoughts from two cosmetic chemists for a deeper perspective on the topic.

Well, your skin changes along the cycle and you can adapt your routines to your cycle. The skin might have different needs depending on where you are in your cycle. For example, my skin is behaving like a bastard a week before the blood bath starts, that's a que for me to use more calming, soothing and hydrating products. Around ovulation I might work with the glow and add more AHA, vitamin C. Ergo, skin might be more sensitive in one part of the cycle, making it react to ingredients you usually won't react to - like fragrance.

The international fragrance association cited up to 3,059 chemicals that can be in a fragrance. I just don't think it's worth it personally since fragrance is cosensitizing and not particularly beneficial to the skin. Once you develop the allergy it's game over. The worst part is you may never find out which chemical it was that triggered the allergy. If people stop demanding fragrance, companies will stop producing it. Here's to hoping 🤞🏽

Totally agree... I have sensitive skin with rosacea and I avoid it. We need to ask for some fragrance free options, but some beneficial skincare ingredients smell bad... and just like parabens they will be kicked out of formulation because consumers aren’t fully educated and they demand good smelling fragrance free. Did you know licorice root is mostly added to skincare for its fragrance part? We just can’t demonize fragrance without knowing the full picture that’s what’s she is saying. Toxicologists would probably know the most about this. All other skincare professionals only comment based on their personal experience and professional bias. Things like the clean beauty movement are a bigger problem because products which are not preserved properly can cause superficial skin infections and worse but those are immediate problems.

I think there are two more things to consider: 1. the manufacturers rarely list specific fragrances on the INCI list. It just says 'fragrance' or 'parfum'. So if you have a reaction you have no way to know if there is anything in the fragrance composition that might have caused it. 2. Not all essential oils are created equal. Citrus essential oils (e.g. orange, lemon, bergamot) are much more irritating than e.g. rose essential oil. But they are all irritating, some less, some more. The only essential oil that is worth the risk due to its other properties, is tea tree oil (in tiny amount) for its antibacterial and antifungal properties, which may be good if you struggle e.g. with acne.

So true. All of the fragranced products that I have I find that they often smell foul. But then the products that are fragrance-free I find I quite like the "medicinal" cream scent. Have yet to find a fragranced product I actually enjoy the scent of. However, now that I know how sensitizing fragrance can be I think any enjoyment I could have personally had from it in skincare has been completely abolished. Much rather take fragrance-free 😌

People with sensory overload or sensory processing disorder also avoid fragrances. One of my chronic illnesses causes a really bad sensory overload whenever I'm in a flare-up, so out of general practice I try to avoid strong fragrance products in my home. At most, maybe an essential oil here and there, but otherwise I try to avoid strong smelling products altogether - skincare, consumer or otherwise.

You are not taking into account that fragrance is cosensitizing meaning if fragrance is mixed with retinol your could become allergic to the retinol bc of the fragrance mixed in with it. Also if you have eczema you should avoid fragrance everywhere bc this means ur skin barrier is compromised everywhere. Since eczema is an auto immune defect it affects the entire skin organ.

For me, all sort kinds of fragrance has no place for skin care. Thats why it is called SKIN CARE, because you have to be kind to your kind by introducing benign products. And if some essential oils and plant derived fragrance claims to have benefits-- for sure that is a small data and anecdotal and also it is not the best route for you to address your problems and conditions. There are more far way better alternatives for addressing of any concern and i think those studied essential oils and plant derived aren't the best. And also cumulative exposure to them can potentially harm your skin in the long run and interfere with other ingredients. BIG YES for going to the doctor to undergo patch test for allergens, because some people mislead that only fragrance is causing problem to their skin but there are a lot of other ingredients as well that aren't labeled as fragrance but do cause allergy and problem to the skin.

MJ Salve that’s a really good point. I had an allergy test done years ago so I know which ingredients I need to stay from (anything with tree nuts, mangoes, and about 50 other different things lol) and because of this when I started really looking at formulations it was pretty easy for me to figure out it was the fragrance that I had a sensitivity to and not the millions of other things that could be in our skincare.

WELL SAID!! I'd also add something I found very interesting in exploring fragrance: it can be used to "identify" authenticity. Because fragrance ingredients are hidden within that word, counterfeits are unable to perfectly match scents. For example, we all know the characteristic scent of Lancome products - if a friend buys you "Lancome" products, but they smell off, it might be counterfeit (ahh thanks for existing, eBay - so many well-intentioned gifts gone wrong 😒). Thankfully, those of us who enjoy The Ordinary/CeraVe have less to worry about as there is less profit for counterfeiters. But worth mentioning for luxury skincare fans!

Honestly I don’t like strong fragrances in general (even when purchasing perfumes, body sprays, etc) but slight fragrances in rinse off products I can deal with. Yaziri Cruz I did watch her full videos and so do other dermatologist like dr dray and dr vanita. Although not everyone have allergies towards fragrance, if you're giving skincare advice and telling what products to use it's best to tell people to avoid potential irritating ingredients just like fragrance. Even if not everyone are allergic there will be a few who will follow the advice and would get bad reactions on their face just because a fragrance is there. Fragrance isn't necessarily needed in the ingredients as for benefits and potentially irritating. Although some would enjoy the smell. I think you're being selfish because you're condemning those who spread awareness toward fragrance and saved the skin of people who might have allergies to it but was prevented because they avoided it.

Yaziri Cruz That's not what you said in your original comment. And the fear towards it also rooted down towards fragrance itself and how it really matters except for masking smell or improving the smell of the product. I personally don't dislike that people started to get aware of this and start choosing fragrance free product , that way brands would release more fragrance free product and would help those who are sensitive to fragrance but couldn't find what's best for their skin because a lot of products that can potentially benefit them have fragrance. So, the fear against fragrance can be beneficial overall. Just like how the purito centella sunscreen, the brand released both with fragrance and without fragrance. And without proper consumer demand , brands wouldn't even bother doing this.

I've tried products before with no fragrance and they just smelled so terrible i couldn't even finish using them. honestly like when my skin care products smell nice because I'm putting them so close to my nose and I am particularly averse when things smell bad. Glad to know this isn't a huge problem if I'm not having a reaction!

thank you so much for this! some of my fave things to use have fragrance (rosehip oil and rosewater toner and stuff like that) and got concerned when everyone was saying fragrance is bad. I find certain things can be irritating like scented moisturizing lotions but those I think tend to have more alcohol or something.

This!!! 🙌🏾 Thank you! I work as a beauty consultant and being a MUA, I’m trying to learn more about skincare as I try to sell products but I want to sell products to people that will ACTUALLY work for them and not just to get them to spend their money. So products I have found that has fragrance in them actually work for me but once people hear that it has fragrance they RUN. I follow another KZfaqr who is a “skincare specialist” probably guess who and he said that they are bad and I just couldn’t get behind that when some of the products I use seems to work! I also have eczema. So I am definitely subscribing! So happy I have found you! Someone who knows what their talking about!

Thank you so much for sharing your professional experience on this topic because I've been really confused on fragrances lately. Everyone has their own opinion on the topic. I've taken the approach of making sure most of my skincare product don't have fragrance and being picky with the ones that do. Making sure I really like the other ingredients that are in there👌🏼 if that makes sense😂 but honestly wtf do I know🤷🏼

Hi Nai, Some skincare sites like PC are also against fragrance including essential oils. Beyond just visible skin irritation they go as far as saying: "Another really important fact: Skin is very good at hiding when it’s being irritated. So, even if you don’t see a reaction, the damage is still occurring beneath skin’s surface, cumulatively leading to problems you will see later on. Irritation is pro-aging, the opposite of what most adults want from skincare." How true is this that essential oils could be doing long terms damage to skin? and is the same true regarding your scalp vs. your face? Thanks for all the great content!

Synthetic fragrances never really irritate me. Usually it comes down to my preference of whether i find the scent too strong or unpleasant. But essential oils definitely irritate me, my skin feels burnt whenever i use anything with tea tree oil and lavender oil.....

Thank the heavens you've put this out. Thank you Thank you Thank you. I have reactive, combination skin but fragrance in products (the subtle kind) has NEVER caused me a problem. What has increased my sensitivity and reactivity has been overuse of stripping products to try and address congested pores around my t-zone. I like that you're saying it's the vocal minority who have made us all question fragrance in skincare. Obviously a product on the low end of the price scale which uses too much perfume-y type fragrance is problematic, but one of my greatest pleasures in life is cleansing with a beautiful balm or cream... part of the pleasure is indeed the scent. Thank you for democratizing a discussion. xo

This was extremely helpful, I am just recently going on a skincare journey and I tend to become obsessive over ingredients because the multitude of information that I take in online from many different skincare enthusiasts and more tell me to pay high attention to products that contain fragrance whether is be natural or chemical. I tend to dislike items that have fragrance because it has been drilled into my mind that it is terrible for the skin so naturally I seek out products that don’t have fragrance as a listed ingredient however I do notice some say they are fragrance free and will use extracts or oils instead. One of the products I’m using now which has no adverse effect on my skin has lavender extract listed in it but I haven’t a bad reaction and it actually seems to calm my skin down significantly... I will continue to avoid fragrance but I honestly don’t think they are as bad as people make them seem.... especially if they are low on the ingredient list.

Hmm. Good point that fragrance may cover up unpleasant odors of skincare ingredients. But. I just don't see how these benefits of fragrance outweigh the risks. Yes many people aren't allergic to fragrances but doesn't the science say they are sensitizing? That your skin can become sensitive to them at any point? That just seems like enough for me to go fragrance free. Why risk it? And I'm thankful for the people that have "loudly" educated me on these risks.

The same can be said for every single thing we use. Even water can be a source of allergy (aquagenic pruritus). I am pro fragrance in skincare because i hate stuff that smells bad, but i am also not a fan of very strong scents because of my hay fever. Moderation is key.
@Sophie-rq5gx

@@funmilayoaina2658 that's definitely a good point. I guess it really does come down to personal preference. The benefits of using something like water in skincare outweigh the risks, but for me personally, the benefits of fragrance do not. But! If I come across a fragrance-free product that smells terrible, I may change my tune.

The number one cause of contact dermatitis is fragrance. They can be sensitizing. They don't add any benefits to your skin at all, just a possibility of allergy. If you want fragrance on your face, why not just spray some perfume one it?

I tend to limit fragrance in my products mainly because I don’t enjoy it, but will usually have a product or two in my routine that contains fragrance. I would love to hear more about how it’s linked with my cycle, because I’ve been having some issues lately. I have experienced irritation/stinging from fragrance but it’s always been because of a compromised barrier. When it’s strong, I have no issues.

At the start of my skincare journey, I did avoid fragrant products only to be on the safe side despite knowing that I had not experienced any form of negative reaction towards it (not that I know of anyway). After following more on skincare, I found out that it is okay to have fragrance in your skincare. I personally don't like strong fragrance as it irritates my throat but would love to have a product that has mild fragrance. However, it would be a good idea for brands to have fragrance free options to cater to those who choose or have sensitivity towards fragrance to be inclusive.

I've had allergy skin patch testing done at the hospital and I'm allergic to fragrance in skincare (even products that wash off). I avoid anything that contains 'Fragrance Mix 1' and 'Fragrance Mix 2' - ingredients such as Cinnamal, Eugenol, Geraniol, Citronellol, Citral, Coumarin, Farnesol, Hexyl Cinnamal plus a few others such as Limonene and Linalool. I also had a reaction to preservatives/parabens - in particular Benzoic Acid. So now, I just use fragrance and paraben free products. It's been great really because it has simplified my skin care routine and I don't end up with a cupboard full of half used products - and my skin has truly thanked me for it.

I'm honestly not sure what to believe here. I've always loved fragrance in general -- body sprays, perfumes, candles, air freshener lol -- and never really cared either way in skincare. But last summer I started researching and found a lot on the Paula's Choice website about fragrance being irritating and she cited studies so I believed it. I slowly phased out fragrance from my routine and it seemed to help a lot? Perhaps a placebo effect/confirmation bias? I don't have any of the conditions Nai mentioned but I've always dealt with acne, redness, and both tight/dry and oily skin at the same time somehow lol?? Whenever I've tried to use fragrance on my face since I always looks worse the next day. Anyone know what this means lol?

I have been anti-fragrance since it means some products are not truly inclusive and I just don’t feel they’re necessary, I truly don’t mind what my products smell like. A lot of professionals however have made it clear that as long as you don’t have an irritation you’ll be fine. Since I don’t have an irritation to it, I will just go on a product to product basis, the whole ingredient deck is what is most important to me.
