So do you need to get sore for your muscles to grow? The answer might seem simple, but let me tell you it's not. You would be supersized how many questions a get about this topic. When I was younger I thought you had to be sore all the time. And for me at the time it worked. But that's not always the case as you will see in this video. Let me know if you get sore each time you hit the gym.
1.) What caused muscle soreness 03:32
2.) What causes muscle growth 05:08
3.) Why people think muscle damage can cause new growth 06:12

John, do you have any advice for anybody who thinks they dont get anything out of their workout if they are not sore the next day? From a psychological aspect it makes sense what you said, but when I go to train im like ok if I dont absolutely kill the shit out of the muscle and train for 2 hrs then i didnt get anything out of it. I cant seem to get out of this mindset and I feel like this is more harmful than good. Please let me know your thoughts, thanks!

I personally feel that once you don't feel sore with a routine, try doing some new lifts to introduce some soreness back. It is to me, an indication of hitting muscles you weren't hitting and stimulating it. I've found it best to try to do that after a while.

This is exactly what I do. After about 4 weeks of a routine I don't get sore anymore. That for me is how I know it's time to change up the sets or reps or weight or exercises. Then start over. Less soreness each week till about the 4th then start over.
@ericsashes
@ericsashes 4 жыл бұрын
I think my biggest issue is never trusting the amount of sets and reps I do. I seem to make sure I always over do it and feel the damage the next day and of course it hinders my next training day at the gym. I need to find my sweet spot of reps and sets. If I wake up and my muscle group I trained is not sore I feel like I wasted that entire session. I’ve also only been working out for about a year and are not too knowledgeable when it comes to this. So thank you for your videos John!
@noahblevins9569

You may also want to watch Greg Doucete. He is very honest and offers great info as well. If you have trained enough to where you have lost strength, you will be growing. Basically, if you bench 225 for 10 reps (only examples) and are unable to do another rep, rack it. If you rest 3 to 5 minutes and cannot repeat the same number of reps, your muscles are breaking down to grow. You do not need intense pain, or 5 days of soreness. Obviously, muscle endurance should be developed as well, so doing 1 set to failure is not optimal.

Ez, you have an easy task ahead. Spend a fortnight doing a certain set and rep scheme, see what happens. Change it for a fortnight. See what happens. After 6-8 weeks you will begin the see the patterns. TRY to be systematic- add a set. Add weight. Drop reps. Pyramid up in weight rather than down. You will figure it out.

This quarantine forced me to look at all these issues with over-training. I'm having great results now with my garage gym, I don't have near enough weight to overtrain myself but good enough to get pretty good workouts. I'm in way better shape now than when I was going to the gym and I feel healthy and with way more energy. I just wasn't spending enough time recovering. Also, I love yoyos, I used to know all them tricks when I was a kid!!

Speaking as an ultra runner turned weight lifter. I think that soreness while training can be in your head but DOMS forms a spectrum. It can be minor and vanish as soon as you warm up or it can be systemic fatigue that can mess you up and reverse your progress. I think a warning sign is when you start to feel heavy and lack motivation. The trick is knowing yourself well enough to tell if you’re being lazy or if you’ve pushed to hard.

@@chrishamilton4501 hamstring DOMS always remind of that scene from the office where jim tricks gabe and Dwight into doing hamstring curls and they're all staggering around afterwards. Funny as fuck that

I usually stick to the same groups of exercises and do what feels comfortable within reason of pushing. I dont intend to be a bodybuilder so much as I am just trying to stay in shape to age a bit better. I do think the point of view has solid validity, and I appreciate your videos explaining your thought process behind these things. P.S. Keep forgetting you have kids and your sons random things always throw me off but I love his energy xD

John you want to talk about pain. Your Bulgarian split squat routine with iso holds has got to be the worst burn I have had in a very long time and I thought bands were not very effective you have proved me wrong.

Props for all the content you've provided to all us gym rats over the last couple of months. There's some great physiques in bodybuilding but they rarely go with great personality. Bests wishes to you and your family John.

Thank you for such awesome information! As gyms start reopening, could you possibly put out content on how to use bands in the gym to enhance workouts since a lot of us will have them? Again thank you for your wisdom!
