Toyota went way, way, way out of their comfort zone when designing a new pickup truck with a standard twin-turbo V6, a new transmission, new infotainment systems, more gadgets and gizmos than they have ever put on a truck before, and al all-new hybrid system. The result is a solid truck, but can the Tundra persuade Ford, Chevy, GMC and Ram shoppers to give Toyota a chance? Is good, good enough to make this Tundra break into the top three? Let's find out.

I just went through his review for most of the half tons and it's quite interesting. Acceleration: powerboost: 5.3sec, rst Tahoe: 5.8sec, tundra ranks 3rd. Braking distance: Tundra seems to the best by a huge margin since most other trucks has 130ft + braking distance

I guess given that it is a hybrid a difference of only 1 MPG and it is a new system doesn't really seem that exciting. Interesting how all trucks are pretty much in that 20 mpg range even though they keep growing

Lack of Auto 4WD is an automatic deal breaker for me. I use Auto 4WD five to six months out of the year in Alaska. GM has had this available for 24 years now. I can't believe Toyota still doesn't have it in any trim level. Trailer towing technology is also seriously lacking, compared to my 2019 Silverado. And 1300 lbs of payload is utterly ridiculous. My fairly loaded Silverado LTZ has 1910 lbs of payload capacity.

The tundra has always been a niche product, Toyota knows they will never sell even half of total f150 sales, even the chief engineer said there was no point in chasing numbers they just wanted to build a modern and solid truck, maybe not as solid as they wanted because of all the quality issues they've been having so far

Another very solid and fair review (question about fuel economy grade vs. Ford's hybrid which did worse not withstanding). Thank you, Alex. Pretty consistent evals of this truck from the automotive press and Consumer Reports as well - a solid entry, that hits - but does not surpass - the mark in this segment. Toyota has the opportunity to tweak this truck over time, such as with the suspension which seems like a sure way to improve ride and handling. The fuel economy needs to be an area of focus with future evolutions of this 3.4TT engine - C/R managed only 17 MPG. Better than the 14-15 of the prior gen, but not at the top of its class where it needs to be.

The main things that will decide whether or not it's good enough is how good a deal you can get,availability and whether or not the buyer is a brand fanatic. Personally I like the looks of it,and it sounds like it has good power. Now if they would add auto 4x4 that would be even better. Also it seems like most all the new full size trucks are nice. Simple thing that Toyota could do: Get production up. Lower the price (one config, shared safety tech, and shared parts with the sequoia), give the consumer an unmatched value. Offer all colors at no additional charge on the SR trim (it's the best value). Allow the consumer to order the vehicle they way they want it, not the way Toyota wants it. Shrink that oversized screen. It sticks out of the dash instead of being integrated and is really too large for no gain. Allow the stop-start to be turned off permanently. Allow the steering assist to be turned off permanently. Give control to the consumer, in short.

The pricing problem is at the dealership. A 2022 Tundra was marked up $10,000 at the local dealer. Probably it's higher for the new trucks, but the dealer stopped listing prices on its web site. Now you have to leave all your info to get pricing.

@@ksorsomeplace Toyota seems to think they can charge more due to a small core of loyalists. I would never pay above MSRP for any truck, but thankfully I don't have to. I worry they've killed the appeal of the Tundra and Sequoia for the typical buyer without enough to draw in many new people. The biggest benefit to the previous generations were that they were old as sin but highly reliable. I doubt the power train on these new models will hold up as well, especially considering Toyota had wastegate issues right from the start. Outside of that this thing has, fewer options, less tech, lower MPG (depending on the competitor), questionable reliability. I just don't see it. Most all the competitors offer more in one way or another, it's already mostly impossible to sway the domestic buyers from their chosen brand. I'm a turbo guy through and through as a Saab fan, I just really don't like them in large trucks/SUVs. The Ecoboost models from Ford say enough with their track record.

Any chance Toyota doesn’t want to sell some huge number of full size trucks? There’s no way to be certain, but I sense they sell just about all the full size trucks they want to build. I could be wrong, but it seems they built the plant in San Antonio to build 200,000(?) units annually and that’s what they sell. I sense they want to have something on offer but have little desire to compete (volume-wise) with Ford, etc. Those that really want a Toyota seek it out. But they don’t intend to have 20% full-size pickup market share. Not claiming to have the answers, just wonder if Toyota is at all disappointed with their (full-size pickup) sales volume. They may be perfectly happy as-is.

The Tundra is a welcome update over the 2007-21 model in terms modernization and updated tech. However, it seems that Toyota forgot what made the 2007 so special. At the time, the Big 3 were just putting out utter trash in terms of the quality of the trucks. Tundra dropped a huge bomb with their new 2007. HUGE power(381HP in 2007 was a big deal, more than the HEMI and LS-based Vortec MAX GM), huge cabin, 4.30 gears, etc. This model doesn't seem to exceed the competition in any major category. Contrary to what Alex mentioned, the cabin is actually smaller, as is the case with all of Toyota's that moved to the TNGA platforms. Despite all of the power it has, it is no faster than a Ram 1500 HEMI w/ e-Torque and 3.92 gears. Towing and payload numbers are middling. And please spare us the reliability argument, as this truck has had plenty of issues already plus long term reliability will obviously not be as stellar as the previous generation since it has turbos, hybrid, new electrical architecture, etc.

@@afcgeo882 the Corolla lost 5" of rear legroom and is at the bottom with the Mazda 3. The Highlander stayed about the same, and the RAV4 was one of the smallest entries prior but its rear seating area still managed to lose space. The Camry also lost space, which trails the Accord as comparison, despite the Honda's coupe-like roof. The Tundra went from 44" to 40.5" of rear legroom. Headroom and cabin width also decreased. The front-end design is way too long, and the truck's lack of expected features (i.e. tow hooks, etc.) as well as questionable reliability and high price, make the new Tundra a big disappointment.

The Tundra is for a somewhat different market than the others. They are selling a brand known for reliability and a company that pays the most attention to engineering and standing behind its product. Are they perfect? Nope. But I’ve learned over the years I will only purchase a Toyota or Lexus. I can’t speak to other markups because our small town dealership was great. MSRP all the way and only $1,000 down to save my Tundra as it was arriving. $54,000 out the door for the 4x4 SR5 with the TRD off-road package, TRD convenience pkg, front end protection pkg, and ordered TRD steps and factory tonneau cover. It has everything I need and nothing I don’t. It’s a beautiful beast and drives great. This truck is for relatively light towing, hauling stuff when you need to, and for people who like to camp, hunt, fish, off-road. If you truly need a work truck and something to tow get a diesel. Toyota is pretty smart for knowing their wheelhouse and who they serve. I plan on keeping this truck forever and passing it on to one of my kids. Hopefully the turbo engine lasts, we shall see. Looks like we are part the wastegste issue and can move forward. But for now, I love this thing and am sure others will too. Oh, on my first break-in tank of gas I received 20.1 MPG. I expect that will get even better as it continues to break in.

I’ll probably never buy a new full-size truck (a 25 yr old truck takes care of my occasional truck needs just fine), but I like the look of the Tundra. I wish the nose wasn’t so pointlessly long though. It’s just got a little V6 under the hood but it looks like it has enough room for a looooong I6. There is at least 2 ft of wasted space in front of the engine. The idea of a “luxury truck” is hilarious to me but again, I would never use a full-size truck as a daily driver since for the vast majority of people out there (myself included), it’s just a massive waste. The vast majority of my driving is with just myself and cargo that easily fits in a trunk (just like the majority of people, including those who daily drive full-size trucks) Toyota’s decision to make just about everything a subscription service is unfortunate. I’d really like to see people say no en masse to this subscription-culture we are rolling into, but instead people seem to be quite happy to be nickeled and dimed to death while driving their $80k “luxury truck” A major missed opportunity here is for high power 120V and 240V outlets like the electrified F150s have. I would love to have something like that available in a truck, especially if I used it for work or camping. I really like that my Ioniq5 has the 120V power outlets and wish it had 240.

Sorry Alex, there is NO better a barometer of how good a product really is than sales numbers. That number accounts not inly for the features of the vehicle, but also for its value (price for what you get), availability, manufacturer’s reputation and other less tangible criteria. It used to be that marketing/advertisement accounted for much of that, but in today’s world it has less and less effect as people are better informed through available information like auto reviews and easily found tech data, recall info, etc. There is really no other objective measuring stick on what the population (versus you yourself) thinks is best.
@Mark-de4hj
@Mark-de4hj 2 жыл бұрын
Its simple really. Toyota trucks are not usually bought as 'mas market construction and fleet vehicles,' which explains the sales figures. Their customers in general, tend to be private customers looking for an all-around solid truck with good strong reliability and strong resale values. In that regard yes, they are very profitable for Toyota. Additionally, there are cheaper and more basic trims available at other manufactures which makes them more attainable for most.
@afcgeo882
@afcgeo882 2 жыл бұрын
@@Mark-de4hj Absolutely, and those lower trims are all W/Ts, no-frills trucks for employees. That said, my comment wasn’t about any specific vehicle. If Ford sells more F-150s that Toyota sells Tundras (which we don’t really know for sure, but is likely true), then Ford has a better truck. OBJECTIVELY. It may not be better for any one particular person, but as a whole, it’s better. That’s why more people choose it, given many other options.
@Mark-de4hj
@Mark-de4hj 2 жыл бұрын
@@afcgeo882 I hear what you are saying but I do not agree. A cheaper more affordable vehicle is more accessible to the masses than say an expensive luxury car. The idea that just because a cheaper more affordable vehicle is better just because it sells more is due to it being more attainable not because it's better. For example, the majority of truck sales are NOT the more expensive upper trims which one could argue ARE better. The basic front wheel drive variants are where the highest sale numbers are.
@afcgeo882
@afcgeo882 2 жыл бұрын
@@Mark-de4hj No, Mark. First off, in a free economy with competition, cars are priced competitively and it is the value of vehicle that leads to higher sales, not its cheapness. Second, vehicles are segmented in comparisons. We don’t compare a 911 to an Elantra. Third, You don’t see the Hyundai Venue being the biggest seller in the US, right? You also don’t see a Jaguar being a sales leader, right? No. The F-Series is the top selling light truck and the Rav4 is the top selling passenger vehicle. Neither is luxury nor the cheapest. So it’s not that. Top trims are NOT better. They’re comfy, and feature-laden, but are not “better.” The value isn’t there and many people think that features are unreliable. Then there’s the “I work in it, I’ll break it, tear it and get it dirty” issue. That’s not better for a work truck. Also, REAR wheel drive pickups account for a small portion of pickup sales nowadays. The vast majority are sold as 4x4.

Good enough *for who,* Alex? Toyota customers that have been buying 15 year old and outdated products for the last decade and telling themselves it’s worth the money because of “reliability”? This truck and the mechanically identical Sequoia will absolutely be good enough for them. Are they good enough to win over customer from the competition and to switch from GM, Ford, RAM, Nissan, etc.? I honestly don’t think so. To make matters worse Toyota’s reliability which was arguably the only reason to buy a Toyota product over the competitors, has severely plummeted. The front end design and interior had to grow on me, still think the rear needs a emergency refresh but certainly an improvement over the outgoing model. However that’s not really saying much either as the last generation XK50 has been in production since 2007.
