my favorite dumb goosebumps plot twist is the one where theses siblings are being chased by a vampire, but then it turns out that the vampire was actually their grandpa, and that they're vampires too, and then the kids get coffin bunk beds for their birthday

The twist in the book version of My Best Friend is Invisible was way way better. Turns out the protagonist and his friends and family had always been very obviously freakish monsters, but you never got a decent description of them as the book went on. So when they flash the light on him, the characters are all "how do you keep yourself warm with only 2 arms?" And "How do you see anything with only two eyes?" Shit fucked with me.

Adam Owens I think it’s the exact opposite. The episode explains that the reason why Brent was such a jerk was because he’s pissed at the aliens. Plus in the book, they planned to take Brent to a zoo because “humans are an endangered species,” and the way the kids reacted to how weird he looks felt more comedic. But in the episode, it heavily implies that they kill him. The dialogue of the aliens after they turn around, combined with the Annoying Orange-esque effects make it much more terrifying (especially with their goddamn grins). That was the only time the show legitimately scared me as a kid because of those faces. I think that was the only instance I’ve seen where that Annoying Orange effect was used to deliberately be creepy rather than to be funny no matter how fucking terrifying and ugly it looks.

2 things about the blob episode: 1. So it’s about a kid accidentally writing a blob that eats everyone? Did this come out before or after the slime episode of Ghost Writer? Did all kids shows just copy each other? 2. There actually is an episode that mimics The Blob franchise and takes place on an airplane as everyone slowly gets eaten, it’s called More Monster Blood.

My "favorite" episode of the show is "Welcome to Camp Nightmare." It's a two parter and I honestly don't know why. Most of the episode is kids at a summer camp getting slowly picked off by a beast monster in the woods. For some reason the counselors don't care and are covering it up. Anyway, SPOILERS, . Seriously, you won't see this nonsense coming . . . the monster is a robot and the entire summer camp was a test for the protagonist to see if he could go with his parents who are spies. Then, it turns out they're also aliens who are going to infiltrate Earth. That's right TWO wtf twists in the last 5 minutes!

I read like the grand total of two Goosebumps books as a kid, which I had forgot about until now, and they managed to be a formative part of my childhood - mostly because I read the endings over and over again to get my dose of supernatural. I looked up the titles so any of y'all can take a look lol The Werewolf of Fever Swamp was rad, they spent the whole book trying to like fight the werewolf, and the main character gets bitten in the climax and inherits the curse, becoming the new werewolf, but it's okay because they patrol the swamp to keep everyone safe etc. I loved this because... I guess I wanted to be a werewolf. Better than regular school and kid stuff. The other one is The Ghost Next Door - I read the whole book much more than the Werewolf one. The whole story is framed as the main character kid going about their day, but they have new neighbours that act weird towards them. Main character becomes convinced that neighbours are ghosts, there's rumours about ghosts circulating etc, but they still try and be friends? Shenanigans happen. The big climax comes when the next door house gets set on FIRE (by accident), and as the main character goes to rescue their friend, they realise THEY'RE THE GHOST. THEIR FAMILY DIED LIKE THREE YEARS AGO IN A HOUSE FIRE AND THEY'VE BEEN IN DENIAL ABOUT THEIR DEATH???? So they rescue their friend and their family from the fire and pass on into the afterlife???? I FUCKIN LOVE GHOSTS SO THIS WAS MY JAM AS A KID. Also in looking up the titles on Wikipedia, there is a Night of the Living Dummy 1 book, it just might not have been made into TV.

I still have the Goosebumps book (Monster Edition 1) on the book shelves. I read it up back in the day and it's pretty brutal compared to the 90s TV show. Why brutal? Since the book and the show have differences, our minds are limited by imagination and painted the disturbing image through text. I remember that one scene in _Stay Out of the Basement_ where the father of Margaret and Casey, a mad botanist, chopped his own clone with an axe and covered with green blood. Man! You never see that coming in the children's book and it's awesome.

I love the concept of interactive rides, so the story being about a 'malfunctioning shooting ride' based on a 'popular series' in the story's universe really brought me in at first. Around the middle I got a bit bored and forgot some of the things, but the twist at the end will always stick with me. Its what I cut my teeth on, and it's kind of like mental comfort food to me now. I know the TV show was... well, it was cheesey as hell. And a lot of the books were too. But I still absolutely love it. Also, I don't know if anyone has mentioned this already, but the reason it had to start with Night of the Living Dummy II was that the first one couldn't be adapted very well without cutting out a lot of stuff. Like, in the book, Slappy shit talks EVERYONE and projectile vomits on a crowd of people. So, I guess they just thought it was going to be too intense for kids. At least, that's what I'd heard.

They didn't show a lot of goosebumps in my country but I remember watching one episode in which a guy accidentally fed some bugs the wrong food, making them enormous, and it completely traumatised me

Hi May, I recently discovered your channel (subbed after one video btw). I just wanted to say that I've really been enjoying your videos. Your perspective on some of these films is very different from my own but at the same time I see a lot similarities to how you approach the fundamentals of this awesome genre. You've definitely given me a few new ways of thinking about these movies. Keep up the excellent work!

Ok but I vividly remember those 3 episodes about Karlsville. It was a little miniature display down where it like sucked in kids. One girl had a lemonade stand and was swindling people out of their money and they deadass turned her into a pig. Another got chased by a baseball with teeth. And the other almost got turned into a plastic doll like that scared me-

I remember the Chillogy. For whatever reason, the DVD I had of it was the cover for the third Monster Blood book. Which was odd.

I remember watching the episode of the original Goosebumps show that made me laugh really hard (it was the horrorland episode when the weird horror with the Spanish accent said "Geeet out! while u still can"!) Great vid!

Okay but have you heard of The Nightmare Room? The Nightmare Room was another short-lived book series also by Stine. While Ghosebumps was more just to be spoopy, Nightmare Room was supposed to be more Twilight Zone-y and eventually got its own network adaptation on Kids WB. It had a heckload of child stars (including even younger Sprouses, Shia LeBeouf, and Drake Bell) had adult stars like John C. McGinley and Robert Englund (yes, that Englund, Freddy Kreuger) and was narrated by Uncle Phil/Shredder himself James Avery. It's probably super hard to track down but it's amazing just how much star power it had.

Goosebumps was gateway drug to R-rated horror. Also, R.L. Stine has some books coming out in August, based on The Garbage Pail Kids.

I didnt grow up with goosebumps so i rly enjoy listening to other people talk about the series. This video was so fun and the lighting is AMAZING! Also for people who are into childrens horror that, like goosebumps, is bad but fun, may i suggest Creeped Out? Its on netflix. A lot of the episodes are kind of like ooOOOOo technology!! Scary!! Bad!! But if u can overlook that, theyre really fun to watch. Theres a baby in one of the episodes that legit creeped me out despite the hilarious and unrealistic cgi. Youll know what i mean when you see it.

I love The Haunted Mask! It twisted me up as a small child and as an adult I can appreciate that it did so because of its strangely mature themes of disassociation and self-loathing. I can't forget to mention that the mask itself and the prosthetics work that the makeup team did are utterly chilling. Body Horror for kids!

IIRC, they never adapted the first Night of the Living Dummy because the original book reads more like a rough draft for the sequel. Slappy is in it but he isn't the antagonist, the actual antagonist dummy pulls less interesting pranks and is much more crude and violent, and it ends with him getting crushed by a steamroller. The driver of said steamroller also freaks out afterwards because he thinks he hit a kid. It isn't a particularly good read, even by the standards of Goosebumps, and the sequel is the same basic story but with much better execution.

If you can get footage of RL Stien's the Haunting Hour, that show had even scarier, weirder & stupider episodes. Like Goosebumps on hard mode. Including the one that is a legitimately terrifying rapture scenario, including of course, scarecrow magic
movies too gross for human retinas 👀
