The whole Chelsea squad are pieces from different puzzles. Difference is Tuchel came when the pieces were a lot weaker than the current pieces and he STILL burst onto the scene and WON THE CL! Potter's pieces are 10x better and he is STILL horrid and can't get a win to save his life. Potter getting down on his knees to use Boehly's wallet is what ruined Chelsea. Potter is just not the manager you can depend on to handle a "galacticos" inspired team like Boehly's Chelsea.

De Zerbi's style of possession is more direct than Potter's. He prefers his players to make shorter passes between the centre backs and midfielders then find a penetrative pass to the running attackers. Potter's teams tend to pass it around more slowly getting closer to goal

@@gummemoryproject6477 Yeah people seem to forget that his main striking option at Brighton was Maupay with some support from primarily an ageing Glenn Murray (1st season) and a constantly injured (and hardly prolific anyway) Danny Wellbeck. Without Maupay this season Brighton had scored 14 goals in the 7 games before Potter left for Chelsea which isn't a bad return, while Maupay has scored all of a single goal since his transfer to Everton. I suspect the lack of goals probably was far more to do with Maupay than Potter.

Regardless of whether Potter needs time to implement his system or not, he needs to be able to make adaptations in the short-term (during games or outside of them), and he has shown zero ability or inclination to do that. We have 14 games left in the season and if we get the same number of points we got in our most recent 14 games (11pts), we'd finish on 42pts aka borderline relegation. We have scored the fewest goals of any PL team over the last 10 games or so. Our performances have got worse the longer Potter has been with the team. He has the lowest win % of any Chelsea manager until you go as far back as Danny Blanchflower in 1979. I don't care about mitigating circumstances - this is historically bad and I have run out of excuses for him.

I don’t get the Arteta comparisons. Arteta didn’t have so much financial backing. I get that it’s a scatter shot approach but with so much players of high potential there’s bound to be some usable parts in there. Also he walked into some quality players like Silva James azipulcueta kovacic and Mount. Honestly the injuries are his biggest excuse, but it’s getting pretty bad.

I agree. I wasn't expecting us to challenge for the league straight away under Potter and was happy to give some space to rebuild, but I honestly haven't seen a single positive in our performances in the last month, only further decline and that's when I get really concerned. It honestly looks like all the life has been sucked out of our team.

Same. I wanted Potter at Chelsea, and have tried to come up with reasons it isn't working so far. I think injuries were a legit factor but even not considering that, there has been more excuses than improvement. He's lucky the new regime are much more lenient, so if they sack now it's warranted. Potter is a still a great person, but sorry the current state is more than poor for the level.

I kind of disagree with the difficulty Potter is having implementing his system. Both he and Tuchel's systems were defensive control possession. Limiting the chances the opponent has by limiting possession. They both predominantly used back 3's and a 3-4-2-1 system. As mentioned, Potter liked his inside forwards to come into midfield to create a box. And Tuchel was more aggressive with the use of his outside CB's. However, the differences aren't so stark that you would think it would take a long time to adjust. And that was largely pointed out when he arrived. However, Potter has completely changed the system. Chelsea haven't used a back 3 since the world cup break so, I'm not sure why that was used in the video to show how he wants this team to play. It's quite clear from the formation of a 4-2-3-1 Potter wants a 10 that like to play as a second striker in Felix, a double pivot in midfield, and wide wingers. Cuccurella has often played as an inverted full back when he's been on the pitch. Mudryk and Madueke are true wingers that play out wide and offer pace and direct play. I think it's clear that's the vision Potter has. All aspects of Chelsea's play has been awful especially, their press. They were one of the best pressing teams last year under Tuchel and under Potter it's actually atrocious. Also, the build up play is basically just for one of the CB's or Enzo to play a Hollywood pass to progress the ball. There's no structure involved. The is no style of play being implemented. Every aspect of Chelsea's play is basically just down to if the can create a moment of individual brilliance. That's the only way they create, the only way they build up and that's why players are more prone to errors defensively. There's only been regression for Chelsea. If there was actually anything that pointed to progress I'd be willing to give him more time. I'd hope this video would give me a reason but it's done the opposite hahaha. Each game I get more convinced he isn't the guy. Time to bid farewell Potter.
@setsuryuu9553
@setsuryuu9553 Жыл бұрын
yeah no idea why they put a back 3... it'd even suit them better the return of chilwell and james and with RLC and Enzo on, but we can see each match they are in a4231 shape, with the fullbacks and CDM duo not being allowed to go up enough and João feliz is def not RW, he drifts both sides all the time as a 10.... at the same time Ziyech drops inside a bit more than he'd be at his best even (i'd like to see him RWB whipping crosses too, but he's playing RW... not ball carrying enough and trying to force crosses or shots even when surrounded by players in the middle). That formation JJ put on would actually be better but well... potter is insisting in 4231 for past 2 months but anyway every single comment in the video seems to be just to help a manager they like?? sure, there are mitigating circumstances that he's trying a new system mid-season with tons of injuries in december and new players arriving in january. But ultimately, nothing is being done to make the present works. Even the subs in game, lineup choices, the formation not up for the best of each player traits, and even the insane non-explained freezing out of aubameyang when Kai is clearly not working ahead of João (Kai himself should play behind a striker) etc... all seem to be focused on that idea of "implementing a new culture in the club in the future" at the expense of fighting to not relegate and basically being unbearable to watch. let`s face it, all chelsea fans should refund their tickets for the rest of the season. It`s not being good to watch, and it`s not changing anytime soon. Culture-changes can take months to year to settle in, and they arent worried about the short-term losses now. It's just not worth it to the supporters to follow them as it is now and it won't be for a while... the way they fired Tuchel implies they might not know how make evaluations to replace Potter anyway too. It's a crisis of confidence on the judgement on the new owners, not on Potter, as they show intent to win with the money spent but only a sketch of a planning of how they're planning to do so I do hope that after they buy at least a second club and start the multi-club structure they can spread around better the excess talent around them and maybe, idk, move potter there and put a real manager in chelsea (they should apologize and bring tuchel back, really)

Joe makes a good point at the end. It's something I've never understood: why big teams hire managers that had good results with small teams, thinking "if he did a great job there, imagine what he could do for us with our resources", but it usually never works out cos there's so many factors at play, many of which the manager just isn't used to. For example, can you manage a dressing room full of egos, with players have have won things you haven't won, so why would they listen to you? It's like hiring the manager of a successful small start up to come and be the CEO of Google, which obviously is unlikely to work as there are different challenges at the higher level, that the manager just doesn't have experience with. And why the hell did they fire Tuchel? He won the champions League with the squad they had and no pre-season.

I honestly cannot say. My head and my heart are both saying yes and no. My head is seeing the win percentage, the results, the performances and analysing how bad all of that is and thinking that it cannot go on. However, my head also thinks this season is a write off and there’s no reason to sack him unless things go disastrously (relegation) because that is just regressing. My heart is seeing us lose and lose and just getting angry and upset and wanting something to change. However I’ve had enough of the constant turnover and feel like we need to commit to someone some time. I just do not see where this is going right now

However, I like the point they made at the end of the video. Just because Potter may get sacked, that doesn’t mean he couldn’t have been the guy. The problem is that I think Potter is not the right manager for what Boely is doing. Boely likes the idea of Potter but doesn't seem to want to operate in a way that would best serve him. Fundamentally, Chelsea and Potter are not a good fit. You might find that given a summer transfer window and a pre-season Potter starts coming good but I fear hes simply the wrong sort of manger for this project.

exactly. It's really hard to say because there's so many compelling arguments for and against. Thankfully, as a neutral, I can just sit back and observe with curiosity. Chelsea are undoubtedly very interesting under Boehly, no idea if they're going up or down from here in the long run. I believe he has good intentions but I'm not convinced that he's got what it takes to run the club properly. Either way, time will tell where they will end up. Hopefully they'll do well in the end, whether under Potter or someone else. It's always nice to see many teams playing well.

IMO the board made an error in judgement not trying to mend things with TT. They probably underestimated the difficulty of coaching. Let alone being a single man transfer committee along with it. It's difficult to find coaches that are not only successful but also adjust well to the club. Honestly think it couldn't have been worse if the board tried to understand TT's grievances and given him support in the sense of a better communication medium, and half the patience afforded to Potter. I mean we could still rehire TT and save money which we owe anyway, but I'm no fool believing that'll happen.

So as a system manager, Potter needs to implement his system (or a new one which suits the squad), and then stick to picking a core of players who will get used to it and perform better within it. I doubt he can keep the entire squad happy with rotation playing time anyway. He needs to be strong willed enough to pick his team within the squad, I assume the players he wouldn't pick as often will be the ones they're looking to offload in the summer which isn't that far off now.
@maciejbala477

that's what I think he might lack, the balls to actually do it and to bench the players he doesn't rate. He's not helped by the owners just buying anything that moves and all those new players expecting to play a role in the first team, so not wholly his fault, maybe he's trying to cater to the board's wishes. But still, he needs to get it right if he is to succeed in an elite club. That's the whole difference between him and someone like ten Hag, who would, by now, have gone through with changes whether players like it or not, and found a way to at least improve a bit.

Some of his selections have been baffling. Ziyech starting in particular makes no sense given he was a technical error away from moving to PSG. Where is the clarity of the plan? Is the player in or out? In order to trying to keep everyone happy (board, players, fans) he's keeping none. He's got to make some tough choices in a clear direction and stick with it. He's chopped and changed his tactics, players, and excuses. I desperately wanted him to succeed, still do. But if results don't change drastically next few games then the bar's too low even for me.

There's no doubt that Potter has some challenges at Chelsea that were not necessarily his fault but I'm struggling to accept 'too many players' as one of them (I did have sympathy for him during their injury crisis, however). Managing big teams IS challenging, that's why he's being paid (brace yourself) £12m a season. He simply HAS to act like it and find solutions or it's the correct decision to sack him. Or, perhaps more accurately; it was the wrong decision to hire him in the first place. Not saying that Simeone is the right manager for Chelsea but there's no question he would have found a way to win matches despite these challenges. That's because he is an elite manager who has the confidence and ruthlessness that goes with it. Potter doesn't even have enough confidence in himself to decide on a preferred eleven in training. Potter, to give him his due, is a manager who can take a D and make it a C+. What Chelsea need, is a manager who can take a B+ and turn it into an A+. These skillsets are both valid, but they are not the same and , if you confuse them, you end up taking a B+ team and making them an F team. That, unfortunately, is Graham Potter at Chelsea.

I want Potter to be given time. I was a huge fan of the guy but the issue is that he hasn't just started poorly. He has a win percentage that would be scary for someone like Leeds or Everton. Less than 30%, that kind of thing destroyed any hope I think the fans had for the guy. He reminds me of Setien at Barca who I liked as well, just doesn't seem suited for a big job in spite of knowing what he's doing.

Maybe Potter could be a good manger at a big club just perhaps not a Chelsea. Perhaps signing a new star filled 11 every season both raises expectations unrealistically and creates an unbalanced and non cohesive squad especially if you sack the manager every season. In some ways ETH has had a much easier problem to fix (barring Glazer meddling) as outside of the winger position he inherited a squad with little depth and no serious candidates (minus Garnacho) for adding to the rotation.

Potter came in trying to do what he was doing at Brighton and saw it wasn't possible for the mismatched group he inherited. The owners began to address this by buying a new core of younger players that suit what Potter wants to do (and what made his Brighton so good) but the players have been together for less than half a season and they might still need 1 or 2 signings in the Summer. Chelsea were depleted, the signings had no direction, the club was in limbo after a big change of ownership. We will see what Potter's Chelsea looks like a year from now when players have settled, have been coached in the system and have built relationships on the pitch with each other, assuming the owners stick with him.

As a Chelsea Fan, I believe we should stick with Potter. With all the manager changes in the past, we have lost patience. Arteta is a wonderful example when he first took charge of Arsenal during the middle of the 19-20 season. And it took him more than 2 and a half seasons to build the league-leading Arsenal team that we are seeing today. Just like Arteta, Potter is overwhelmed at this time. He has not been able to take full control and be the boss that everyone listens to in the dressing room yet. Players still think that Todd Boehly is making the one who is in charge. However, I am one hundred percent sure that will change in the future. Potter has to get rid of the people/players that have a negative energy or think of themselves as bigger than him. Slowly we will get there and it will be much nicer to see a Chelsea team with consistency rather than what we have seen in the past with one season winning the league and the next not being good. KTBFF. TRUE BLUE.

I think the massive acquisitions is the problem. I bet the squad is reeling with so much change. Everyone who is reliable and tested with one another (the safe approach) if disenchanted as they've been replaced and see no long term future at the club and the rest are a random jumble of new players. There's a reason teams don't completely rebuild mid-season. Potter's one weakness was not being proven at being able to handle the big egos and the big pressers etc. I think you throw this season out and let him pick his team, try various ways to play, and find what works best. Then he gets the executioner's hand in the summer and cuts the squad down to size. I think those who survive the exodus will feel loyalty to him and be scared for their futures.

100% agree Cole - if Chelsea want to move forward from our previous history of sacking managers every few months then we need to give Potter the opportunity to implement his tactics, formation and preferred starting 11, and sell everyone that doesn’t fit into the rebuild. Squad size is one of core issues. It became an urgent issue under Frank Lampard when he started bringing in Mason Mount and others into the team to fill needed gaps. Chelsea's recruitment always seems to be focused on the short term and not the long term. They need to address the bloated squad and sell some players, especially if they're going to bring in more players and still try to adhere to FFP. Until the squad size is addressed maybe they need someone like Carlo Ancelotti who can deal with player egos.

To say you need a preseason to change formation is just ridiculous. Tuchel came in changed the system and implemented a game play on how to defend better which was our issue under Lampard. He hasn’t implemented any style of play and we have to hear about how he’s got too many players but he should have the balls to pick the players he wants not treat each game like a friendly. How can you get team cohesion when you change on average 4.3 players per game that’s on him. The main issue is he is just totally out of his depth and the comparisons to arteta are ridiculous when were arsenal winning 2 in 15 with the lowest goals for in English football let alone the prem. I got to a lot of chelsea games and he is one of the worst managers I can remember. Atleast you could see what AVB was trying to do as well as Scolari this is just something else!

The comparison with Arteta I do get because he was in like 15th I think at some point. The thing is though I think most people were shocked Arteta kept his job at that stage, saw way more people calling for his head than backing him because it made sense the way they were performing at that stage. In the same way that it's not healthy to sack people every two seconds, just saying "no we can't sack him what if in 3 years time he gets good" is equally stupid.

I have lots of thoughts on this. First off, JJ, you've got Chelsea lined up in 3-4-3 with January signings. I'm not sure this is correct - since World Cup ended, Chelsea have played with a back three (for most of the match) only twice - against Fulham (3-5-2, before Enzo joined) and Liverpool (3-4-3). I don't think this line-up is representative of the problems we've encountered with the exception of 'not moving the ball fast enough'. Secondly, Felix is part of the problem - he seems like an exciting player but his stats are not great, and I'm not even talking about underscoring his xG - his dribble success rate is roughly 25%, iirc, which is not great. You are correct on pointing out the problems with such a bloated squad. The size of the squad is not his own fault, true. But at the same time, he is trying to please as many players as possible by using rotation, when in all likelihood, he should stop using players like Aubameyang, Ziyech, possibly Koulibaly, Azpilicueta etc. He should focus on starting with younger players and giving them time and space to develop. If we continue losing with youngsters, then it's a project. If we continue losing with lots of senior players, then it's an abject failure and waste of time. Additionally, although our PPDA is fairly high under him, we do not have the greatest concerted press. I believe he needs to change the system to ensure compactness in central areas, which is why playing 2 central midfielders in Enzo+Kovacic/RLC does not work. It could work if Kante was healthy, but even then, he'd be papering over the cracks.

Yeah I feel like he was in a massively difficult position from the start. Changing from one manager with a very clear system, to a new manager with a very clear different system, MID SEASON. Plus when it's changing to a club with big egos who, no criticism of Graham Potter, may have the doubt in their minds, "what if he's not good enough to manage on our level?" makes it all a big uphill battle for him. Can't blame him for taking the job but I'd have waited for offers at the end of the season. The point about the squad size is a great one, as well. For Potter to do what he wants to do, would that mean having to sell off a tonne of players? Making ruthless cuts that will cause upsets and raise a lot of questions, especially for such a big spending club as Chelsea. Being able to do that at Chelsea would be very, very hard and would require total backing from the owners...which I don't think he'd get at that level unless he already performed really well in his first season, which he hasn't. I'm a Liverpool fan, so I don't know a huge amount about it but I can definitely see him getting axed before he ever gets the freedom to do what he wanted to do.

There seems to be overwhelming positivity directed at Potter, despite evidence. The positivity is mainly from within the UK. Potter was brought in to be a puppet for Boehley. Potter is not in charge of the typical manager things you would expect. That being said, Potter has shown lack of care in the short term. His demeanour is that it someone who doesn't need to win every game and that life is full of ups and downs. Whereas a winning mindset for a manager is determination to win, at any time, against any opposition and to overcome whatever is happening around the club. In his press conferences, Potter literally sounds like a man who is telling friends he can't go out, can't buy that ticket, can't take the trip, because his wife won't let him, but tries to come up with all sorts of other reasons. (Boehley is the boss) On another point ab it t tactics. If he really was a good manager, I don't think you will see a slump in every players stats, including those that absolutely love Chelsea. To see the next generation of Lampard and Terry, down and defeated is a sad sight. Lowest stats for years, tactically all over the place. But based on my first point, is it Potter or Boehley? How much influence is Boehley placing on the decisions? Is he doing more than scout, contract negotiations and so on? Is Boehley deciding players for games? Potter has shown more capability than this. Is Boehley the assistance scripted play AI that Potter never wanted?

There are so many factors that's affecting Potter's success at the moment. One is that the squad is too large, and he's trying to play well and win at the same time. Now he has to chop and change at every moment to make sure you change results; it doesn't work and you try again, Rinse and repeat. Another one is that there is very little time to implement any sort of tactics. The season is so compressed, and there is no time to do any work. Another is the attitude of the players. Chelsea players are too egoististical sometimes, we've see this happen so much where they just switch off when they want. I believe that sacking Potter is not the right choice right, particularly when you consider that there is very little to play for this season. Let him stay and reevaluate after the season.

The problem is the January signings. If he didn’t have all of that money spent then I think Chelsea fans would give him a chance but seeing all of that money spent and seeing little improvement makes it seem like they blew a bunch of money for nothing. I personally think that Boehly is to blame by focusing too much on expensive prospect players instead of shoring up the teams weaknesses in the current season. I don’t see the point in signing these expensive players if they aren’t getting Champions League football. I do think that another manager would get more out of the signings made though and that Potter wasn’t ready to manage a club like Chelsea.

Tbf I don't like the justification that he's struggling because he has a big squad. At the end of the day, being a football manager is making harsh decisions and cutting players that are not apart of your plans. Pep has no issue freezing out players he doesn't need. Arteta did it with Auba and few other big players. Potter needs to decide who's in his plans and cut out the ones he doesn't want.
