Haitian Creole is not the same as French. While both Haitian Creole and French are similar in some ways, both have different origins, which is a root cause of their differences in pronunciation, verbs, grammar and other features.
French mostly originated from Latin, Gallic, and Frankish languages. Haitian Creole orginated from classical French, west African dialects, and to a lesser extent, the languages of the Taino natives who inhabited Hispaniola.
The vast majority of Haitian Creole words do come from French, but the pronunciation, sentence structure, and verb conjugations vary susbtantially. Hence, a native French speaker may not necessarily understand Haitian Creole.
