I actually preordered this game in 1997 after reading the Nintendo power preview. I know later games and Stardew have made improvements to the old formula but this will forever have a place in my heart. The definition of childhood nostalgia for me, and it can't be replaced

It is similarly addictive as the grinding in Diablo II and games like that. You start to shut off your brain and do things routinely and do it for hours despite repeating the same stuff over and over.

I think Harvest Moon on the SNES is one of the best games ever made. Yeah... it is the first entry of the series and I like also Friends of Mineral Town and A Wonderful Life, but it was a small revolution I think. I also played other games of the series and Story of Seasons, but I think there is no better farming simulation than Stardew Valley. That game is a Harvest Moon / Story of Seasons we never will get!

From one who's been playing this game for about 20 years (I typically do a playthrough probably once a year) I still love it even to this day. The N64 version is what the designers had in mind when they were originally developing it on the snes, but due to staff and budgetary issues it wasn't until years later that the team managed to make the game they had envisioned. That being said, personally, I really like this flawed, rough gem and prefer it over the N64 version. The staff was reportedly very slim, making team members having to double up on certain duties. It's the game I grew up with and played probably consistently the longest (In a three way tie with EarthBound and a Link to the Past) Despite it's programming and design foibles it's my favorite harvest moon.

I think i might prefer it over back to nature to be honest and i played back to nature as a child. it's mostly because of the rival marriages and babies in 64 and i'm pretty sure there are more dialogue lines. Pirate it. It is super easy. Just google the rom you want, and google a snes emulator. Snes9X is my choice. There is literally no moral objection that can be made against it! They want $8 for a 20 year old rom file on the E-Shop! And that's if they even decide to sell it when you want it. Fuck them. You owe them no loyalty, they don't give a flying toss about you. Whether you buy it from a second hand shop or download it for free, Nintendo doesnt see a dime. But downloading gets you more money in your pocket for more games. I wouldnt have been able to afford Pokemon Moon if I had been spending my money on the fucking $10 they want for Earthbound (the manipulative cunts). Do yourself a favor and go on a rom downloading spree. It made my life better, it can make yours better too.

Stardew is the spiritual successor to this game. It's great that the developer keeps working and updating the game so it's even richer than when it launched. The SNES version doesn't have the quality of life features like the newer games so it can feel tedious to play if you're used to the newer style of harvest moon type farming simulators. The music was super repetitive, we would usually have the radio playing in the back.

Back then it was already boring at times, but so wholesome and the little rewards, which were little steps to improve, made it somehow entertaining. I'd play it again, like I did before already, but at my age my head is filled with severeal thoughts, so I can't just sit there and play such game with peace in mind. I'd pretty fast think, "What am I doing here?" - that's the reason why my 120+ PSP games collection of rare and great games remain untouched since countless years. :/

freespace2dotcom It's funny how things work, I got Harvest Moon on clearance for 14.99 in 1996, and there were several left...imagine knowing what would happen with the value back then? For fucks sake I bought a complete Sega 32x collection between 96-98 for UNDER $100, all new! The consoles were $16 freakin dollars! Everybody looked at it like a worthless piece of shit back then, and now about half the library has skyrocketed in price with several at $100 or more. It's really kind of annoying when I think about how I could've bought all the copies of World Series Baseball 95 that I wanted to brand new all day for literally $5, which is what I got my one copy for in 97, and sold those same new copies for at least 150 nowadays... Stupid me.

Yeah, I kind of wish that the prices were cheap as fuck like in the old days so I didn't have to save for the few games I still want to own. (Like Ogre battle for SNES, ouch!) I actually picked up a copy of both Megaman X2 and X3 for the SNES for $5 each when a mom and pop rental store went under around 2002. I just wish I had taken more care in removing those blasted stickers but even so, they're in good shape (X3's label less so...) words cannot tell you how thrilled I was to obtain them and today that is my ultimate collection story given how screwed anyone is if they want to play them on real hardware without giving up their left arm.

People that grew up on these games are getting older and starting to miss them, so that drives up the price. As does popularity driven by youtubers like AVGN. The market has exploded in the last 5 years. It's ridiculous really. Ultra common games like Mario 3 are going for $30 when they should cost half that or less based on how common they are.

Harvest Moon for Snes is one of the best games on the console but probably the second compared to the rest of the serie. Harvest Moon - Back to Nature have so much more content (of course, is from next generation) but those graphics feel so much old than the Harvest Moon for Snes, at least for me, pixel games don't gets old just more classic. If there is a remake of Harvest with the features of Back to Nature with a more pixelated graphics (and the same camera view, I don't like the isometric) will became the perfect Harvest Moon game for me.

Having only played Stardew Valley, and how ConcernedApe mentioned he was inspired by Harvest Moon, I think it is very evident after watching this video. They look VERY similar, down to the graphics, style, gameplay and such, which only makes sense. Of course Stardew expanded to elaborate mining, caves exploring and many other things. But still, it's clearly inspired by this game.
@Ajlez
@Ajlez 2 жыл бұрын
Absolutely. There are many more games in the Harvest Moon franchise too and many do include a bit more in depth mining, fighting, and whatnot, so I don't know how many of them CA played but I assume he knew about many. They always had a habit though of introducing new great features, but taking out old good features in each release, so it was always a struggle wondering if they'd ever make the perfect game. So that's where Stardew exceeds. I have to admit I always kind of want people who only know Stardew to just open up Harvest Moon on SNES and spend some time laughing and pointing out all the features they recognize, because it's like, guys, YOU HAVE NO IDEA. I'm so happy he introduced Golden Chickens in the last big update... that's a very small thing that went in and out of the games over the years, but on SNES there was just one and you could only find it through a really peculiar optional side quest. It was a great memory of the pre-internet times for me.

Despite this being a good objective review u should have also mentioned how this games sequels had everything this game has plus more. The series is very iterative and every subsequent iteration is almost always better than the last. So if you were to play only one harvest moon game, maybe one of the later ones would be a better choice. Oh and u forgot to mention one of the best features: u get to have a dog! Lol

In the modern day, there are three, perhaps up to five Harvest Moon games worthy of your time. Harvest Moon: (More) Friends of Mineral Town (The two different games have you play as two different genders.) Harvest Moon: Magical Melody Stardew Valley Story Of Seasons (Not as great but still pretty good.) Rune Factory 4 The first three are really where it's at, though.

i remember playing this through the many moons as a kid and think you totally got it wrong because this was never relaxing, i always pushed the daily limits it felt sweaty in it's own way when you try your hardest, the music was relaxing and the festivals. For me this was the og definitive farming game only topped by stardew which is the best kinda by far, i actually really hated animal crossing for it's daily progress only was playable with timewarping still feels bad. rune factory 4 a bit too much action. graveyard too tedious and heartless and so on many others didn't itch the switch to grind/plan the day to perfection and it should feel fast that is why it has a tight day schedule also most of that footage is from one season and your fields are tiny, sorry i doubt you really got into the real feeling of harvest moon wouldn't say it aged that well but the 2,5 years limit and trying to some goals is a challenge that feels very rewarding at each chekpoint, back then it was also not too easy to get tips or good walkthroughs, like for the other rpgs where i owned the books

They have iterated on the series a lot since. I strongly recommend Rune Factory 4 on the 3DS. It is a bit of a case of 'seen it once, seen it all', but if you're just getting into the series, Rune Factory 4 is your best bet. Shame they won't be made anymore as the firm went out of business.

Not people, investors and scalpers. They don't care for the game at all, they rather spent countless hours on making a few bucks on games, even if you could make more money in the same amount of time with a minimum wage job. But many are too stupid to realise that games are not investments.

It can be played in a couple ways. One can play it just to get through the story, hit up some chicks, stack some cash, and whatnot, or one could indulge oneself in the minutiae and master the patterns needed to be as efficient as possible, instilling a kind of peculiar passion for the details however rote and tedious they may be over time. It's a challenge if you make it one; there are no difficulties to choose from. One can look at the ocean and say to oneself, "Wow, it's wet and beautiful to look at--let's fuck" or , "It's beautiful, but how does it work? Does gravity's pull from heavenly bodies affect the ebb and flow of the waves?" et cetera. It may be a deal-breaker for those who only are attracted to fast-paced, action-type games, however. In my somewhat humble opinion, it's one of the greatest games ever made, especially considering when it was made. Peace and farewell.

Honestly, I'd suggest the GBA games, rather than Harvest Moon GB. They really do match the tone well. For those of us that want the fantasy RPG AND the farming, there's Rune Factory.

I'd recommend skipping straight to Runefactory 3/4. I couldn't get into *any* HM games after the SNES version. Everything after the original was just an ugly, simplified mess in comparison. Fomt is supposed to be the vastly improved version but I just don't see it.
@endymallorn
@endymallorn 4 жыл бұрын
@@Caydiem I didn't like most of the sequel Rune Factory series games. The first one just hit the mark and I didn't like the overcomplication later. The SNES Harvest Moon is in many ways an overcomplicated, slow, mess with nice (but boring) art. FoMT/mFoMT simplifies it, brings the colors to a less boring palette, and just feels better.
@ArcaneAzmadi
@ArcaneAzmadi 5 жыл бұрын
I'd say that the original SNES Harvest Moon isn't worth playing today for any reason other than nostalgia or retro curiosity. Harvest Moon is a very long series, and one of those ones (like Warcraft or Mega Man) where it didn't _really_ get started until the second installment (either Harvest Moon 64 on the N64 or Back To Nature on the Playstation- similar games with subtle differences). The gameplay was SO drastically expanded in the sequels, and while different sequels have added and subtracted different levels of gameplay depth, the SNES original, while fun for its time, is simply obsolete.

Pro Tip; at the start of the game avoid farming altogether and just go fishing you can catch 2-3 fish a day and make way more daily then you would spreading seeds and growing crops and that will earn you enough to start farming cows much sooner.

I love your brutal honesty about picking up the game. I was at a swap meet once where some lady came up to this guy selling games and said "Do you have Harvest Moon? I sold that game years ago for like 200 dollars; it was such a good investment!" Clearly the ridiculous value of the cart is what is remembered about this game. I don't think I could get into this type of game at this point in my life. Maybe as a kid it would have been intriguing, but then games like the Sims would have outshone it.
