Totally love the honesty you inject in your reviews Andrew. Mac should never in my opinion come to market with a supposed AVR with so many limitations. So many options out there are fully future proof with class A/B amplification. A sad entry in my opinion.

Please do a modular MacIntosh comparison but stick with Class D digital by getting an MX123 A/V Processor and feeding it into a MMcIntosh MC257 7-Channel Solid Sate Amplifier.

I don't really get this receiver, especially for $8K. As a long time McIntosh fan and owner, if you really want this brand you need to step up closer to $12K for the real deal. I'm currently running a $7K MC8207 200w per 7 channel 83lb. big-boy amp, but I paired it with a $5.5K Marantz AV8805A processor with all the features you could want, and it powers my full set of B&W 800 series speakers without breaking a sweat. I bought the Marantz processor because at the time it was a year wait for a Mac unit, and since internally quite a few sound processing circuit boards in the Mac are made by Marantz, you're not giving much up and you save $3.5K over an MX123. Once you've owned Mac for a home theater, it's hard to go back.

@@andrewrobinsonreviewsmyself I’ve been a Yamaha user for years and I feel it’s among the best in my opinion when you follow a major rule of thumb. Take the proper time to calibrate your gear. Definitely will be rewarded in spades by doing so. The brand you reviewed been subjectively great for stereo it will be curious how it turns out for home theater. Just their price points may hurt

When discussing how to power my 5.1.2 system through a marantz preamp, my installer wanted to use the Macintosh 7 channel class D amp. I screamed heresy. I instead powered the front three with an mc255 amp and the other 4 channels with an emotiva amp. I couldn’t be happier. Leave class D in your car or boat. Andrew, you nailed it. The modern audiophile has evolved….and this product isn’t for him. In as much as I love Mac, I love the honesty of this channel more.

I'm in a position now where I could afford something like the McIntosh brand and to declare "I finally arrived". But then I realize that the reason I can afford these things now in my 50s is that I was very frugal in my 20s, 30s, and 40s. It seems like a betrayal of all who I am if I bought an $8000 receiver when my $1200 Onkyo TX-RZ50 can do all the MHT300 can do and more. I don't think Class D is the issue as much as it's overstated value in what's it's bringing to the customer with this product.

I'm an old school McIntosh user. I'm a two-channel tube guy and have the now discontinued MA2275 All tube integrated amplifier. I haven't been able to understand their products for at least the last 10 years or so. Their new popular integrated amps use a solid state power amp section and are ugly as hell! I just don't get it. This new receiver kind of continues the befuttlement I've had with the brand of the past decade or so. I still love that they are made in America in Binghamton, New York, they have incredible build quality and a storied reputation. I'm still pro McIntosh and I love my integrated amp, but I don't think I would buy any of their new products. If going McIntosh, I would recommend going vintage.

McIntosh is a microcosm of high end audio in general. No concept of giving customers value for the money. Instead they charge so much for middling components that the only value being offered is the knowledge that you are capable of spending too much money on a mediocre product. Of course, a walk down Madison Avenue in NY offers countless buying opportunities of similarly dubious value.

Great conversation about Mac! My entire life I wanted McIntosh! I finally was able to pick up a couple of new/modern pieces a couple of years back! I don't know... I'm not as euphoric as I thought I would be. My MA252 feels underpowered and demonstrates clipping at around 65%. Tweeter noise as well. Mac engineer I talked to didn't seem to think what l was experiencing was unusual. Nowadays, at McIntosh price points, you have many other great options. I hate reporting this news!

It would have made more sense to make a supplement recciver to an existing 2ch system rather than a full standalone home cinema receiver the way they did it.

I find NO, ZIP, ZERO, NADA, reason to justify the price tag given the features or even sound quality of this product! Kristi is 100% correct. Wait a minute, $8000 and it doesn't sound like a Mac??? WT actual F were they thinking? The biggest draw to McIntosh, IMHO, has always been the sound & looks. Ya just gotta love the super sexy looks and sound of a McIntosh. I owned a Mac 275 tube amp long ago and the worst mistake I ever made was selling it, I try not to remember that day. If I was going to spend that kind of money it better have the Mac sound, Period! I'm glad it is as good as it is and hope it doesn't blemish thier reputation to much. I moved away from the “big box” AVRs (aka Denon, Marantz, Onkyo, Pioneer) simply to try something new and because I’ve had a good experience with Emotiva amps. Its pretty bare bones in terms of features, and it does have its quirks/bugs, but once dialed in the MR1L does perform like a true audiophile component. I get the whole preference for “class A/B” sound now. On another note, also looking forward to the Sonos ARC review.

Two things: - I think Andrew you’re spot on on saying McIntosh clients love separates - audio enthusiasts with money are all behind that to minimize interference - I do believe class D is better choice for home theater - we are used to select receiver that does it all is good for music, movies, streaming, making toasts and what not… but in pure cinema - class d clarity is apparent, it makes all surround effects placed with great precision and no class A compared to me while lesser energy consumption and generated heat were deeply appreciated. For music class A or G in my case all the way. Hence I do think this is absolutely spot on choice on their behalf and not a coincidence.

I own a 50 year old McIntosh tuner that I bought, and I have a McIntosh subwoofer I was given, both well used. However, the customers who buy new McIntosh gear circa 2023 typically don’t even consider any other brand. It takes away the need to be a value proposition.

I have had a McIntosh C45 preamp for almost 20 years as my daily driver. It was the one model that had two 5.1 channel analogue inputs and I have had oppo 205 as main way to get home theater through it. Sounds like this 300 would be a downgrade! Too bad and sad that the brand releases a product that is overpriced and under delivers just for a biased fan base. I was actually salivating over this receiver. Not anymore. Sticking to my C45 for a bit longer. I will say owning a Mac for 20 years without a single issue and it works and looks like the day I bought does make me feel like one of my kids will inherit it eventually. Thank you so much for posting this review.

Many times the companies use a contract called leasing manufacturing facility. Basically, they can legally claim what's produced by a vendor as if they produced it themselves - hence they are leasing the manufacturing capacity of the vendor. Many products are produced under the similar arrangements. And, many times from the concept, design, and testing to the packing, the name brand company doesn't get involved. They audition a few different options than say go with A or B. That's it, then they put the brand name sticker! Many times, the company itself doesn't even understand how it actually works.

Another significant omission for this McIntosh receiver is XLR out for front channels. Quite difficult for existing McIntosh users to integrate this receiver into their 2-ch system.

I am a confessed McSnob, and I wouldn’t buy this thing. If it doesn’t sound like a Mc, I don’t want it. They have been making odd decisions for a few years now (I think based on business affiliations rather than sound (coughSumikocartonaClearaudioTTcough)). And Kristi’s comments on the current and new/future customers are dead on. It’s exactly why I bought McIntosh/Klipsch when I could. For 2 channel, I wasn’t disappointed. This would be a terrible starting experience.

If this had gaming features & 2 more amps built in, I would’ve considered it. I for one only want class D so, I’m still waiting on a good option that fits what I want. 1. Gaming friendly features (HGIG, VRR & such) 2. Class D 3. A good room calibration like Dirac would be nice to what the hype is about Also at least 9 channels of built in amplification. NAD almost won me over but I don’t believe it has gaming features

An excellent review. I own and enjoy McIntosh 2 channel gear, but in the HT space? McIntosh has always been a no go for me. The brand always seems to be a generation or two behind in either the AV processing or its connectivity options. This product seems to be for someone who wants that McIntosh aesthetic but does not have the space or funds for their Pre-Pro and amp stack. I suspect aimed for the older consumer that does not concern him/herself with 8K gaming, music streaming, room correction, and up to date surround sound formats. They want something simple where all they do is hook up their player and view a movie.

THANK YOU for mentioning that Mac is reaching out to Hypex for Class D modules.... Though it's a valid point that it sounds like an NAD. Curious as to why they didn't tweak the sound on purpose to match their brand's signature.

As stated in the review, they had the Hypex modules built or modified to meet their power requirements but it would appear they didn't do anything beyond that to alter the Hypex or Class D neutrality.

I'm glad that hi end reviews are more common, however, McIntosh strong suit is full tube pre amps and amps, and their excellent hybrid integrated amps. Shame on you Mc for using your iconic brand recognition to try to sucker HT buyers. Thank you Andrew and Kristi for your total honesty in product reviews.

As I've stared in other videos comment section, I'm exactly McIntosh target buyer. 63 years old, with 44 years into the hi-fi addiction and spent a shocking amount of money to support my addiction ( not to mention the cost of house renovations for my wife of 42 years to begrudgingly approve my purchases). Yet, even this old fool (quite familiar with Mc sound) will not fall for their obvious use of brand recognition to entice the novice wealthy buyer. Hypex class D modules and Mc sound is oil and water. No matter how much you shake the package, it will not truly bond. I stand by my statement, I want McIntosh to know that is shameful.

In a recent past life, I worked 5 years for a Portland OR, based, high-end studio monitor company that used UcD modules. Most RMA issues came from the Hypex UcD180lp and UcD250lp modules or the Hypex psu's. Anytime I see them show up in modern HiFi I wonder if quality control has improved or if the supporting boards we had coming from a third-party DSP company were the culprit? Either way, I tend to want to run from these products...

Great review. Love that mix of objective and subjective impressions, plus a great conversation afterwards. Still feels very unique among all YT competing channels. As for this product, sounds to me like McIntosh is taking its customers for granted and on a ride, striving for corporate profitability over customer satisfaction. Blind followers will fall for it, but new wealthy customers are too sophisticated and a bit more demanding. They’ll more likely go for StormAudio or Trinnov or even Anthem over this is specs and sound signature are not on par with McIntosh expectations. What a waste of an opportunity to make Class D sound more like a Mac via their own proprietary tech.

@@SteveRig82 I haven't listened to a Class D but I'm listening to the RZ50 which has an EI and when I switched to my toroidal Marantz, it's like night and day. Music on the RZ50 sounds like music without all the feeling - I just can't get into it no matter how much I listen to it. It's probably more accurate too because of Dirac which is the kicker. More accurate but devoid of soul and character. Is that what Class D sounds like?

Thanks for the vid. In my opinion the sound you describe doesn’t have to do with Class D. Nower days Class D can sound nimble, fast and really muscular at the same time in my experience, even when compared to high end Class A/B components. It therefore just sounds as if McIntosh didn’t get the job done (right).
