Yes!!! Thank you! I am so tired of hearing this ignorant 100 years number thrown around like canon. The backstory even makes no damn sense if it was only 100 years between OoT and WW. Do you homework, Monster Maze, this is why I talk shit about you Zelda KZfaqrs! Edit: It's important to note, this 100 years number comes from a mistranslation of an Aonuma interview, where he gives a rough estimate for the setting of WW. He actually says a word that means 'between 100 and 1,000 years', or more accurately, 'hundreds of years' (which is exactly what the King says in WW). We don't know the exact time, but I would say 800 years makes sense, given the evidence and past events.

@@thatjrpganimefanplayerjusi8003 Of course, some could argue that it's just the style they chose for WW that lead to Ganondorf's design, but I agree. He seems to be modeled similarly to the King's age, which makes sense given the timespan in the backstory: Comparing what we know, in regards to the distance between WW and OoT on the timeline, there needs to first be enough time after the Adult ending to OoT for the people of Hyrule to forget the details of the Hero's story and it passes into legend--enough to even leave the people waiting for the Hero to return. Next, Ganondorf resurrects from his imprisonment to wreak havock on society, just like he promised at the end of OoT. With no hero, they plead to the gods and are instructed to run for the hills from a coming flood. Then, enough time passes that the people forget where Hyrule is, and Ganondorf is resurrected again from his imprisonment beneath the sea, in Hyrule Castle (where many of his minions remain frozen in time). Afterward, King Daphne's is resurrected temporarily from his stasis and proceeds to search for the Hero and Zelda, but Ganondorf kills two sages before anyone knows. Then, after much searching, the King finally finds who he thinks is the Hero, but even Jabun wonders if he is. In summary, ONE HUNDRED YEARS, MY ASS!

Even more than 800 years, atleast 900 since the artist died in the very end of the "9th century". We also don't know how old the tomb stone is, but concidering there is a random guy dancing in front of it instead of paying respects it's most likely old enough for people to have forgotten about the artist. So more like 1000+ years.
@nickcurrant2254
@nickcurrant2254 2 жыл бұрын
One last couple of things: At the end of OoT, Ganondorf exclaims that when he finally breaks the seal, that is when he will exterminate Link and Zelda's descendants--*descendants*--so even Ganondorf knew he'd be sealed for a looooong time. Additionally, Zelda and the sages would have been fully aware of Link's story, and Zelda is even in perfect position to pass it on, so again enough time passed where the people of Hyrule *forgot* their history, despite it clearly having been passed on to later generations. This is only WW backstory, and it alone probably represents more than 100 years of time since OoT, before there was even a flood.

You're the top comment when it comes to talking about the terrain outside of BotW's map. You get to hear a theory I've been holding onto for almost a year. Assuming that the size of Hyrule is reduced from the canon scale (like most videogames do), and that this change in size reduces the landscape by around 60x (given the 1:60 time ratio in the game). I've used several glitches to explore outside of the map, and I've determined that (if we assume the desert used to be a lush green environment with a large sea to the West, as seen in Skyward Sword), then the entire island seen in the game mostly resembles a heavily transformed Kalimantan, in Indonesia. Hyrule itself exists in the South Eastern Quadrant. This is, of course, is assuming that Zelda takes place in the future. If we're following the typical belief that it takes place in the past, then I have no idea where it is.

We know this because the same Spring we visit in the Lanayru Desert in SS is also in the Lanayru Provence in Breath of the Wild. 3 springs in Faron, Eldin, and Lanayru is both Skyward Sword and Breath of the Wild. Concerning Hyrule’s inconsistent geography, I’ve had a theory for a while that Hyrule’s powerful nature deities cause these changes. Perhaps the dragons in specific? In SS, the water dragon floods the whole forest. And in BotW, someone at the Faron stable mentions a legend that the dueling peaks were created by a dragons (Faroosh) flying straight through what was once a single mountain. The dragon’s being invisible to most could also explain why we haven’t seen them doing this in other games. It’s essentially the same explanation for the “evolution” in WW. Powerful spirit/deities (one of which was a dragon) caused rapid changes in people groups. Perhaps the simple answer of “magic and spirits” explains a lot of Hyrule’s scientific improbabilities.
@AskMia411

Underrated comment! My personal feeling is that it's a mix of nature gods and Hyrule's volcanic activity. Eldin volcano is MASSIVE, and if Vesuvius could bury Pompeii so thoroughly that people could build on top of it, you better believe Eldin volcano could REALLY mess with the geography of Hyrule. And when deities can literally yeet entire sections of the world into the sky or completely flood it, the fact that some locations are actually consistent between games is impressive!

I'd like to say that the planet being called "Earth" along with the names of the Sun and Moon being "the Sun" and "the Moon" aren't exactly evidence of it being an alternate version of our Earth. It makes perfect sense that the name of a planet in its intelligent species' native languages is going to be some version of their word for dirt. Same with the big bright dot in the daytime sky, or the pale circle most visible in the night; them being called "the Sun" and "the Moon" would be because of translation. Now the constellations, on the other hand, 100% confirm that it's an alternate version of our Earth; the chances of those same constellations forming in a completely different part of space is, pardon the pun, astronomically low.
@ddegn
@ddegn 2 жыл бұрын
Agreed. "Sol" wasn't the name of the closest star, it was the ball in the sky which provided light. "Moon" is a generic term. It doesn't mean the only the moon orbiting planet Earth. In Pikmin series the captains have their own language but the game is designed for You to understand what they're saying so of course it'll be "translated" into something the player can understand. In Pikmin 2 they give a lot of their own names to objects found on earth. Such as a pine cone being named a "conifer spire..." How do they know what a conifer even is? Do they have pine tree's on their planet? Where are they even getting this earth name from? A more likely explanation is whatever they've named a pine tree is being "translated" to an English equivalent. So yeah I agree with this analogy

A Legend of Zelda game set in “modern” or futuristic Hyrule with an alien invasion would be cool. Perhaps a shared enemy would force Link to team up with Ganon? (Posted before watching video) I always thought of Hyrule as a kingdom, maybe the size of Europe (or maybe even just the Iberian peninsula) with many other lands, known and unknown lying in the surrounding areas. What I think is a more interesting question is the size of Hyrule, determining it's reach and what sort of empire it would equate to in reality.
@kage2395
@kage2395 2 жыл бұрын
This video would have been a great opportunity to address the position of the sun. In most games the sun is in the south and moves east-west, implying Hyrule is in the northern hemisphere. In BotW, the sun still moves east-west, but is in the _north_ implying Hyrule is in the southern hemisphere instead. But in BotW 2's trailer, we see the sun in the south once again. This is extremely confounding. If Hyrule's physical location on its planet is unchanged, then the *_entire planet itself_* would have to change its orientation in order for the sun to somehow shift from north to south. Another astronomical quibble: During nighttime, why does the moon move, but the stars don't? In real life, both the moon and the stars move as night progresses. Also, as the moon changes phase, why does it remain in the same place relative to the sun? It is impossible for a crescent moon or even a quarter moon to be positioned exactly opposite of the sun. (from a technical perspective I know it's not important but it somewhat breaks the immersion for me tbh) These are a couple of details that I haven't seen discussed much and thought would be a good part of this video. Regardless, this was still a great video and it made my astronomical side pretty happy. Keep up the good work MM ^^

There’s a theory which suggests that Mario and Zelda take place in the same world, i know that can be weird but hear this: In super mario odyssey it was planed to give mario a link outfit, and did you know what was the description of the suit? An outfit from ANOTHER LAND, want more? there’s also the fact some games have mario enemies, like in the minish cap where there’s lakitus, bob-ombs, etc or in a link to the past where there’s the chain chomp, and finally there’s wart, yeah, i know that both link’s awakening and super mario bros 2 are dreams, but the thing is that both subcon and koholint where like parallel universes that you can only access by dreaming, and who is in both games? Exactly Wart (or Mamu in japan), also, wart is the only character that manages to scape from the koholint before anyone and it would make sense since he can travel throught dreams, so, with all of this i can say that mario and zelda takes place in the same planet? But where exactly? Well there’s a whole continent in mario odyssey that we don’t explore, so that could be the location of hyrule. PD: Sorry if it’s to long.

Going off the creation myth we get in OoT and TP, Din created the "red earth" _before_ Nayru created the heavens, including the sun. So I think we can safely conclude that Zelda cosmology does its own thing with its own internal rules, and any similarities to our own are fleeting and coincidental. For my part, I view the sun and moon not necessarily as spherical structures, but more akin to, say, leaves floating on a pool, while the "solar" system is closer to being geocentric than heliocentric.

Quick reasoning behind the constellations of the big dipper, Orion, and cassiopeia. The big dipper's proper name is Ursa major, Ursa meaning bear, male bears being boars, a boar being Ganon. Orion is a great hunter/warrior Link being a great warrior, this also explain that constellation being on tetra's desk feeling a natural draw to it. Cassiopeia being a queen (noble woman) is a representation of Zelda. Showing the eternal cycle is even written in the stars of the Legend of Zelda

Theory: Every Nintendo series takes place in a different "realm". Every realm can have multiple planets, or they can be one expense of land. Apparently all of the characters can realm hop but it's so insignificant to them that they never even bring it up to each other. Sometimes really hopping happens on accident like in Mario Rabid Kingdom Battle. Some realms are hard to get to like the sacred realm that Link and Ganondorf spend time in during Ocarina of Time. I guess this means Pikmin happens in our realm?...

Excellent video, as always! It reminds me of a somewhat crazy hypothesis I've had for a while. Imagine that the ancient gods and creators of the planet housing Hyrule were also aliens, but extremely powerful and immortal, essentially literal gods. Basically immortal, powerful space elves. I imagine that this divine race took on mortal forms and lived with the humans and other species in the most ancient times. I'd also imagine that many intermarried and had 'half-elf' children with humans, and these half-elves are called Hylians. They might have been called Hylians and began to die out due to all the immortal gods and goddesses eventually leaving their creation, save for Hylia who remained to watch over the world and its peoples. Since she was the only physically remaining divine, it would make sense that the Hylians were called such after her. There isn't really any evidence for this, but I do find it fascinating, especially considering how Nintendo seems to play with ideas of more cosmos-spanning races existing and visiting the world, such as "them"/"they".
