I got one of those and wanted to like it, but I hated it right from the start. My biggest gripes were that any tiny spill will go down the side of the pot and potentially underneath heating plate. The other was that the slow cook function heats from the bottom rather than the side. You might as well be using a regular Dutch oven on an induction cooktop.

Wonderful review. I have a couple of comments for people who are considering this appliance. The narrator stated that she would prefer a dutch oven to have a white enameled interior. For those who would prefer a white dutch oven I thought I'd mention that the Instant Precision Dutch Oven is sold at Williams-Sonoma, and it is indeed white (inside as well as outside). Also, I think it's worth mentioning that this device offers the option to use on a manual mode, which means it can (a) be set to run as a slow cooker at low (203F for 30 minutes to 12 hours) or (b) in manual mode be programmed to cook at 300F - 400F for 10 minutes to 3 hours. It can also be set to use Celsius if desired. I'm new to slow cooking, but from what I've read, using low heat is generally preferable to high heat settings. So I think I'm going to be very happy with the white precision dutch oven I purchased at Williams-Sonoma.

I have had the Instant Dutch oven since it came out. I think the practicalities of it far outweigh any minor cons. Not having to have a separate sear or sauté pan to get the slow cooked meal ready to cook is great. One less pan to clean. I’m ok with the round shape. I don’t use it for ribs. I agree with the enamel color argument, I wish it were light colored, but not anywhere near a deal breaker. The video said there was only one slow cook setting. That’s a bit misleading. There’s only one slow cook preset. With manual mode, you have many temp/time options for slow cooking. If you have to shut off to change the temp, no worries, the cast iron retains heat beautifully for that 30 second change over. No big deal for this unit. You can use as a separate burner for anything you need a dutch oven for, try that with a slow cooker. You have a cast iron pot to use on a separate burner or the over. As a dutch oven, it’s just as good as any of my LeCreuset. I choose based on size, not brand. This one is great, as are my LeCreuset. On regular slow cookers, the lid is a source of escaping heat. The glass or stainless tops do not retain heat anywhere as well as cast iron. This product produces a very even heat all the way around which creates a very evenly cooked and perfectly moist dish. I would not buy a separate slow cooker with this product in the marketplace. It is a much more versatile option. If you absolutely need the oval shape for what you cook regularly, then by all means. My gut says that this one will meet the needs of 90%+ of the people out there.

My cousin used it while visiting during the holidays and immediately ordered one for herself. We own both Staub and LeCruset pieces and the Dutch oven that comes with the Instant is of surprisingly good quality. Don’t know who makes it for them but they did it right and spent some money on it. The Instant Precision Dutch Oven a definite keeper for us.

I have one and love it! In fact, I rarely put it away! I love that I can brown, and skow cook ,then keep warm ( another feature the ladies did not mention) all in one pot. I have made everything from spaghetti sauce, soups, and stews and kept mashed potatoes warm without browning for literally hours. I have a huge cast iron collection, many different enameled pieces with cream and dark interiors and I would not give this up. I would love an oval pot if they came out with it, but for now, the convenience of using only one vessel is worth it. My standard crock pot is high or low, no searing, braising setting. This pot can also be used on a stove top by itself and after proofing bread in it,you can put the pot in the oven to bake the bread. It's a winner!

I bought the instant precision Dutch oven specifically because I was going back over the road as a long haul trucker and space was an issue. So I completely agree: it will not replace having a Dutch oven and a slow cooker, but if space is an issue (camping, trucking, RVing, apartment, dorm) then it is a great gadget to own.

While I have to take it off and put it back on the base when cleaning it, she doesn’t have to try to move it around at all. I bought this IP Precision dutch oven and I LOVE it! I was able to toggle the temperature on my instant Dutch oven without resetting the machine. And it says right in the instruction manual that the slow cook setting is 203 degrees. If you want to slow cook at a higher setting (dont ask me why you would, that really isn’t “slow cooking” at all) then use the manual mode! Color of interior and oval vs round shape really come down to personal preference. The temperature range is NOT 203-400. Check out the instruction book! On manual you can go down to 77 degrees for proofing dough. Or set it to 140 degrees for sous vide. I think it’s an awesome appliance. I am ready to toss out all the slow cookers I bought that cook on such annoyingly high heat. This IP dutch oven is so so so much better….light -years better.

Both of them speak into the camera in such a way that I feel as if it’s just a great, informative conversation they’re having directly with me. Hannah also really cracks me up. I love her energy and she seems so genuine. As to this video’s subject, I would opt for my slow cooker and a white ceramic Dutch oven. You could get one of those appliance sliders that sit on the counter that let you slide it back when not in use, or... an alternative solution is to get a short cart with wheels that you could put them on, and just roll them to where you wanted. My grandma (all of 4' 9") had a little cart grampa made for her that had wheels on it. The top was solid so her slow cooker, her blender, and food processor was on it, so all she moved was the removable pieces to clean. Their bases stayed on the cart. He put a power strip on the end so she just pulled it over to the plug on the counter. He made it her height so she could easily tend to cooking, blending, chopping, without straining herself. When she was done with it, she rolled it back to its "spot" on the other side of the kitchen.

I had a slow cooker and I gave it away as I rarely used it. It does nothing that I cannot do myself in the oven at a low temperature. Maybe they can be useful for people who work and have a family to cook for, but for someone such as myself, living alone and retired with all kinds of time on my hands, I prefer my cooking to be more hands on than set and forget. Also, how many of these appliances do we have room for in our kitchens? Air fryer, bread machine, rice cooker, sous vide circulator, food processor, stand mixer, toaster oven, Instant Pot, slow cooker, juicer, blender, vacuum sealer, microwave... and it seems that every week or so, someone comes out with a new 'MUST HAVE' gadget. If I purchased all of these things, I would need a kitchen the size of the test kitchens at ATK.

Braises are all well and good, but I’ve been having a streamlined cooking process, for ribs and pot roast, using the Instant Pot multi cooker, first using the sauté mode to sear, then sealing the ingredients in and pressure cooking for 45 minutes. It’s become automatic for me, and my stainless steel lined pressure cooker is wonderful for quick and hearty beef vegetable soup, in a flash! I still enjoy my auto- shift (to keep warm, when done) CrockPot for short ribs or a set it and forget it work day pot roast, neither of which is seared. One thing I always do in the Crock Pot, for meat recipes, is set an inverted 6” porcelain plate right on top of the ingredients, which nearly always have a few inches of space above them. Then place the glass lid. This insulation creates a more even, efficient (possibly quicker by just a bit) result. Thanks for a great overview of these valued kitchen tools!

IPDUO60 V3 . If the Instant Pot Dutch Oven insert came with a stainless steel liner, I would replace my automatic Crock Pot (ceramic) with it , assuming I was assured there was an automatic Keep Warm setting. (Just started a second look at it). As for Enameled cast iron- I had a troubling experience in the 80’s with a beautiful Dansk enameled oval Dutch oven. I had regularly used it for a few years, for pot roast and cassoulet (beans), when I discovered that the interior enamel (which, as is typical, is a painted on, then fired on, glass) had shattered into thin shards/splinters and come off. I have no idea how that came about, but I have not wanted to own that sort of vessel since then. I do feel lucky to have the soup and stew functions of the 6 quart Instant Pot, and my ceramic pottery slow cooker for braises. Hope this helps.

The space saving I somewhat get, but you are better off just getting the original InstaPot that can do so much more than this (and will braise and sear as well). But I am not sure I understand your point of “bound to a gas stove”. In most areas of the country gas will cost you a whole lot less than electricity (and this video does not say the watts or energy use of this device). We have a gas stove, gas furnace, gas clothes washer and dryer. During our mild (but sometimes cold) SoCal winters where the furnace may be on frequently my gas bill is for the might is about $32 while our electric bill is about $100. During the summer when we are using AC, but still gas for all else (not power of course) my gas bill is $20 while the electric bill is $250 to $300! My point is putting a real dutch oven on or in a gas range is still far less costly than this thing plugged into an outlet! And what folks forget is any dutch oven pot put into your oven at a low temp is essentially a slow cooker!

I really enjoy your videos! For a little cheaper in price, I think the Cuisinart Multicooker is much better. Although I owned a slow cooker, what I like about my multi-cooker is that I can cook everything in one pot. I can sear my meat and then switch it over to slow cooker mode. I know this could be done in my Dutch oven on top of the stove too but It feels safer to be able to walk away from a multi-cooker or slow cooker, rather than a stove set on low. The multi-cooker can roast, sear up to 500 degrees, slow cook-low, med, high and simmer settings, and steam. It’s more rectangular than oval but that’s still better than round. The only negative is that the current version also has a black interior. I have the original copper color interior so it is easier to see when searing meat, etc. but mine only goes up to 400 degrees. Good video but I have to really disagree with ATC’s opinion regarding a black interior. I have a Staub and have also cooked many times with my son’s Le Creuset. I love them both and I’ve had no issues with determining the degree of searing I’m getting with either one but it seems to me that the Staub sears a bit better and faster. The black also doesn’t stain like the white interior. I’ll also add that the Staub’s lid is superior to the Le Creuset’s. It’s not the small “spikes” on the Staub, I haven’t seen any difference in cooking results, but when lifting a moisture covered top the Staub drains directly back into the pot much easier and better and doesn’t result in water all over my cooktop like the Le Creuset does if you’re not careful. Bottom line is that the difference between black or white interiors isn’t significant, they both have some minor advantages but shouldn’t be the deciding factor when choosing between them and I don’t think is anything to be concerned with in the Instant Pot.

Not understanding the black interior bias of Dutch ovens, if you can use non-stick, cast iron, carbon steel, blue steel cookware then you'll have no problem with the Dutch oven with dark Interiors, if your experience is limited to stainless steel, bare aluminum or tin lined cookware then maybe they'll be a slight learning curve that is easily adaptable. ✌😊

Actually on the IP dutch oven, your temperature can be set very low, well below 203, like for sous vide. I bought one because I got tired of crock pots boiling my dinner at the “low” setting. I use the manual mode and set it at 190-200 so my food is actually slow cooked, not boiled. The dark interior is fine with me, I don’t sear unattended and am bright enough to recognize when my food has browned. It only takes a couple minutes.

Great review. I have a slow cooker, and this instant pot dutch oven, and it is my FAVORITE pot i've ever had. I am now wanting to replace all my pots with enameled cast iron. I am a beginner/ intermediate cook and all the recipes i've tried in it, have turned out better than ever. I've made soups, beans, stews, hispanic foods, paella, and so much more. And everything has been wonderful. The Manual mode 2 is my favorite so far. I like that i know what temp i am cooking at, which i would never know when cooking in a stove. The cooking surface is a little small, so i have treated myself to the Tramontina braiser you guys recommend and it's on the way. Hope I love it just as much as the Instant pot dutch oven.

I think the major selling point of this is that it's electric, really freeing up access to a lot of people. Small kitchens, even smaller ovens and stoves, the eternal fight and juggling act of an eternal stock pot on the burner while timing or compromising by sauteing or pan frying in between or after. This could potentially open the floodgates for more gourmet and complex meals while camping, on a boat or RV or even accessory dwelling units like cottages and BnBs. Hell, even a budding home economist or cook while in a dorm!

I bought one for my mother and ended up getting one too. My mom has 3 different types of arthritis and 2 rare conditions related to rheumatoid arthritis. I work 12 hour swing shifts and help care for her. She cannot use a regular Dutch oven. It’s too heavy for her to move from the stove top to the oven, etc. I have to move this from the base for her, clean it, and put it back but she doesn’t have to do anything other than use it. It’s perfect. She adores it and I do too. Neither one of us are feeding several people, though it is easy enough to do a hearty soup or stew in it that will feed more people.

Along with the space savings, there is energy savings. Less energy will be used not heating up the whole oven. Course, many would consider that a downside to not having the beautiful aromas of cooking permeate the house. Also, when cooking for two people a smaller vessel makes more sense.

To limit the chance of ceramic from cracking, it can't be fired too high (stoneware is out, terra cotta is in), and ideally it needs something added to resist thermal shock and arrest crack propagation. Micaceous clay, like you'll find in traditional Navajo cookware, is EXCELLENT for this purpose, and it's really pretty and sparkly to boot. I've heard of borosilicate glass frit being used to good effect too, but I can't find examples of such cookware available commercially. If you ever give ceramics a round 2, I suggest passing over the gimmicky stoneware pots and pans trending on social media and starting with small craftspeople making micaceous cookware. I promise you'll be pleasantly surprised by how good it can be and how well they can handle (comparatively) modern cooking techniques without cracking.

If you plan on making homemade breads, you'll be better off with one of the Dutch ovens with the black enameled interior, (or the actual cast iron Dutch oven) because baking bread in them will permanently stain the enamel finish of the light colored Dutch ovens. I picked up the Precision during a recent sale. I have three Instant Pot pressure cookers (one of each size) but their slow cook function isn't great so I bought it mainly for that. Many slow cooker recipes call for browning meat and I hate having to do that in another pan. The size didn't bother me as I'm only cooking for myself. Honestly, I've found with other slow cookers that there's a lot of temperature guesswork involved anyway because companies don't list temps for low and high. I just use manual mode. Also, I never found glass lids to be very useful because they get so steamed up you can't really see down into the pot anyway.

Huge years long fan of you all. I think you need to let go of the Staub is bad because of the dark bottom, it is not even close to being a problem. Any meat browning releases itself from being brown not from someting visual - it detaches when its brown. Also the ever so lightly textured bottom really helps release anything. I have used both Le Creuset and Staub for many ,many years. And I think Staub is really a better DO for me. The evenness of the heat is without competitors. I love Le Creuset but Staub absolutely wins. You gotta let go of the dark/light inside thing, it doesn't have a lot of weight.

ATK doesn't think Staub Dutch ovens are "bad" - they recommend them. Just because they declare LeCreuset their "winning" Dutch oven doesn't mean all the others are "losers". I’ve a Mario Batali Dutch Oven, a lodge cast iron Dutch oven and an Instant pot. Plus a Lagostina Artisan hand hammered stock pot. I recently purchased a Souped Up Kitchen clay pot that I use so often as well. ( I wish you’d review this pice of art! It’s phenomenal.)! Also an Instant Pot Duo plus 60. I use all of these on a regular basis. I have things I cook in one and another of these pots. I love my Lodge for bread and and for “hard” cooked meats like shank and tendon. It’s is so thick and it really provides an awesome product. The rest I use for so many other uses. The Instant Pot I use for rice, ribs, reheat adobos “steamed” puddings and Mac and Cheese. Never again stove top when you have the best “stove top style” Mac and Cheese in the world. (Just don’t rush it, NPR is the way to go)! This appliance is perfect for anyone who lives in a country where the power supply is really expensive. Or their accommodation is limited. Then this and a regular Instant Pot and a good Air Fryer (Cosori or Phillips) could save space and money. Everyone is competing today to be the best choice! Back in the day it was either big name French style cooking equipment or Revere Cookware or Everware. Today it’s an abundance of treasures suiting every cooks needs! All of these appliances and cookware work wonderfully well. Just avoid the cheap crap!! Peace and blessings.

I actually think that the biggest redeeming factor of this is that it allows you to set temperature in degrees and not “high or low” like most slow cookers. Honestly, I think the fact that it's a normal dutch oven is its most important feature. The thing is, if you're shopping for a dutch oven, this offers all of the functionality of any other, with the added bonus of a compact, portable cooking base. If I were in the market for a dutch oven of this size, I would absolutely buy it. I'd use it in the oven when that was ideal and stick it in its base whenever that would better suit my purposes - which, given that I only have one oven, is fairly frequent. Yes, if you limit it to only what the base can do, it's going to fall short. However, there is no reason to do that.

No! I will never give up my Dutch oven. The most used tool in my kitchen. After my Knives. And maybe the cast iron skillets. Wait, also the Allclad pieces..... After DVRing a recipe on triple D years ago, where some French chef made a low and slow pot roast using the oven and a quarter hotel pan, served over yellow grits, I copied everything he did exactly. 5 hours in the oven. It is better than a slow cooker or Dutch oven pot roast. By far. I actually gave away my slow cooker. It's that much better. I had been using ATKs potroast recipe for years. Split the chuck roast down the seam, trim, truss and brown the meat in the dutch oven, and so on. And it's excellent. Much better than the slow cooker. But with the hotel pan, you split and trim, but you also cut the two pieces in half. And because the four pieces fit perfectly in the pan, you don't have to truss. You do have to use another pan to sear, but the end result is worth it. I'm making myself hungry. Gotta stop at the butcher shop. Great video.

Probably even when pots were first invented there must have been someone saying "heh, pans are for people, who can't cook like we always did with a stick on the fire" 😂

@@Mrbink01 Considering sous vide started out as a restaurant technique I find your statement that it's for people who can't cook highly suspect.

You can also use as a proofing box for dough which is nice for bread bakers and can also dehydrate herbs.

I already have a slow cooker and a dutch oven, but the instant pot's dutch oven sounds like a good gift idea for housewarming.

I was watching a man who cooked pulled pork in one of these and he put his on Braise option, for 4 hrs, I am thinking this may have been more appropriate for this cut of meat than slow cooker.
