@@deaddomain It's honestly bothering me how casually kids can get mistreated (both in media and sometimes in real life) as a means to some cultural war end. I mean, it's so clear that they don't care enough to understand or explore the kid as a person. The kid is just a proxy for the "real" drama that the main character is going through. Objectification is strong in this one :/ At least this one is not as bad as Sound of Freedom, but damn the bar was low.

I also didn't like the way the pastor “cured” Terry’s cat trauma response in the movie. He basically locked her outside until she said she didn't want to be a cat and they acted like that harsh and unsympathetic method is the way foster parents should treat traumatized children

The self pimping thing highlighted the cat thing with me. Seems they made her far too much of a focus not because that part in the story stood out, but because they wanted to make her greedy for money later after the cat act didn't net attention anymore. Thus luring the audience into belittling that whole character as if comparable to say a shady twitch streamer.

As a trans girl raised by Christians who recently got into the foster system, I think it would be catastrophic for more Christians to involve themselves further. The characters presented in the film may be a lot more sympathetic than ACTUAL real life Christian’s, but in my experience growing up in that kind of community I didn’t meet a single person I would want within 10 miles of my kids (if I had any). I find the arrogance of claiming that “God called me to adopt” to be the biggest red flag from anyone. There is a great need, but I can only see Christians doing more harm than good

It sounds like there's an additional layer passive conservative propaganda to this film (and the story itself): the systemic problems that cause kids to suffer from abuse are supposedly solved by individual citizens deciding to be good people and take on a massive burden, instead of those in power doing anything to fix the problems themselves. It's kinda like when you see a "feel good" news article about someone paying off kids' school lunch debt: the individual act of kindness is overshadowed by the systemic cruelty that put them in that situation in the first place. Should learning that there are hundreds of thousands of kids in foster care inspire you to adopt a kid? Probably, yeah. But it should also make you ask why there are that many kids without a good home in one of the richest countries in the world.

Another thing on the potential transphobia on the cat kid bit, it also would potentially target people who are xenogender, which majority of them are neurodivergent and compare themselves to animals or objects as a way to explain their gender. I can guess its why because of the transphobes mocking trans identities, xenogenders get a lot of flack for it by both parties. Just wanted to add something.

After Sound of Freedom came out (and my mom saw it like 2+ times), she made up a story about talking with a woman at the airport (where she works as a gate agent) who had been in a flight with a little boy from Mexico who spoke fluent English and said all he does is work, that he doesn't know video games or fun, and that he doesn't know where he is or where his family is if he could make his way back. There had to be an investigation because she called the LEOs (airport cops) and begged them to look into this kid. It only later was told to me as, "Ha ha, I guess that lady was confused! The kid had actually been traveling to North Carolina and had been visiting his grandma someplace in Mexico and wasn't lost and didn't need help and the family is so embarrassed!" Which I know means she completely fabricated the event because I know the tells of her pulling stuff out of her ass. And whoo boy did that story smell of poo. I could also tell it was fake because it was directly after she'd watched Sound of Freedom and was going on and on about how fulfilling it would be to save innocent kids from slavery. Which wow that's some kinda white savior complex! Anyway. Just like when she stole so much alcohol an airline noticed, she got in 0 trouble because she's a union rep and threatens to sue because she 'knows the book.' One of these days she's gonna do this sort of thing and finally Find Out.

In FF's and The Morbid Zoo's dissection of Sound of Freedom, they noted the very effective marketing, but now it seems like this might have been a singular occurance that won't work again. Sex worker here-- tbch I've almost never met a sex worker w/o a trauma history, but it's not for the reason ppl think. It's bc we have a special skillset: social/emotional hypervigilance/insight, tolerance of escalated situations without losing our cool, etc. We know how to handle people having big feelings and can keep our cool if they turn on us. Also bc of the taboo we have to already be someone alienated and not feel like we're losing a lot / making ourselves newly deviant (though sometimes we're just autists too ^_^ but it's usually borderline. In my estimation there's like a >90% rate of borderline in sex workers).

Hey! I just wanted to add something to your commentary on the cat behavior of the child. My understanding is acting like a cat or some other animal is actually a trauma resonse in children. I don't think it's related to transness, as I've seen adoption KZfaq channels talk about how to approach a child that is always acting like an animal after trauma. Anyways, have a good day! Id love to hear other people's opinions on this.

It may also not just be a trauma response per say but it can be a result of abuse like the case of a girl who acted like a dog because of how her parents neglected her in her earlier stages. Human Development is very complicated basically.

I was gonna say the same as a catgirl gendered person, that it sounds more like pet regression than a xenogender thing. Tho I feel like even from that angle it's still written kinda iffy. Regression is a pretty healthy coping mechanism from what I know, and it's not a behavior that needs to be stopped.

If you want to watch a good Christian movie, try Au Hasard Balthazar. It has near perfect ratings on Metacritic and Rotten Tomatoes and is widely considered to be one of the greatest movies of all time. The difference is that, despite being a Jesus allegory and made by the devout Robert Bresson, it's a drama and not a preachy "feel good" movie. The Gospel According to St. Matthew is also arguably the best depiction of Jesus in any movie, despite its director being an open gay atheist who is most famous for directing Salo or the 120 Days of Sodom.

I work at a movie theater in a rather conservative part of the country, and over the past couple of months we have gotten most of the movies Angel Studios have released recently, and every single one of them had the pay it forward message at the end, usually promoted by either the leading actor, or if it was based on a true story, the real person the film was based on. This was the same case for Sound of Hope. The real life Reverend and Donna was on screen, telling people to give Angel Studios more money. The first thing I noticed watching that while waiting for the conservative senior citizens to get out of their seats was the reverend’s gold watch.

I agree with your analysis that those who made the movie appear to be genuine about wanting to help kids! however unfortunately there is a greater connection between Christian dominionism and foster care/adoption that isn't always so easy to see on the surface. I highly recommend Kathryn Joyce's book "The Child Catchers: Rescue, Trafficking, and the New Gospel of Adoption" and I deeply hope you will give it a read before yourself adopting a child. Basically, Christians are encouraged to adopt by their churches to further their Great Commission agendas to the point where there actually is a higher demand for adoptable kids than there are kids who need to be separated from their families, which ties in nicely with colonialism and structural racism/colorism!

I was also concerned about the "I'm a cat" subplot because this is a legitimate thing foster kiddos will do to help with trauma. I've fostered a kid (5yo) who would meow or nuzzle people as a way of being outside of themself for a while, and I watched that scene where the dad wanted to feed his foster kid chicken livers and thought "Oh, no... I may need to actually break down for my kid's teachers that this is *not* how you help a kid who uses roleplay as a coping mechanism." They did a lot of things in that movie that humanized the foster parents, but those parents still had a lot of things they did wrong that were not shown under any critical lens. (For the record, Laura - Foster Parent Partner has some videos on the basics of how to handle a foster kid who uses animal roleplay to cope, but the bottom line is to not treat it as a huge deal--that kid knows they are not a cat, they just need a break from being a scared kid.)

I cant say, I'm surprised that's where Leticia Wright ended up. What a waste of good talent Edit: since this is supposed to be a family/inspirational movie, they could have omitted the sa scene as those are very triggering in religious communities, who encourage "praying away" mental illnesses' symptoms. 🙃

I’m thinking about the “pretending to be a cat” thing. From what you read in the article it’s really hard to judge what actually was going on there; lots of kids do animal behavior in different ways for different reasons. Like there’s a difference between 8-year-old me thinking “raar I’m a dinosaur” as I chomped on broccoli vs one of the neighborhood kids (about 6yo) who likes to say she’s a cat and will meow at adults instead of talking to them vs some more complex ND thing vs whatever trauma response they’re implying here vs… The point is, not having been there, I’ve got no way to guess. But if it is like the second one (the neighborhood kid who meows when you talk to her)-a game she plays that maybe also helps cover up some anxiety-doing the “well cats sleep outside but KIDS get to sleep in this nice bed” thing can be a way to give the kid an opportunity to end the game themself without demanding it, giving orders, etc. Especially if you’re trying to avoid getting into a battle of wills. I think that’s what the article was getting at? Setting boundaries but letting the kids choose what to do about it rather than jumping straight to forcing the issue. What we don’t know is how the new parents would react if the kid had said “ok meow” and then spent the next two hours crawling around on the porch-would they actually have locked her out, or would they have tried to talk to her and understand what she was feeling etc?
