As the name suggests, mood disorders are associated with persistent emotional dysregulation. Moodiness is common with bipolar disorder, but it’s also common with ADHD, ODD, DMDD, and other neurobehavioral conditions. Differentiating one condition’s symptoms of moodiness from another is critical in accurately diagnosing patients and determining a helpful treatment and management route. In this hour-long ADDitude webinar, Dr. Thomas Brown, Ph.D., and Ryan Kennedy discuss how to get the right diagnosis and treatment for ADHD and bipolar.

There is also an autism profile called PDA - pathological demand avoidance ,that is often mistaken for ODD , bipolar or various personality disorders and can occur with or without ADHD. It isn't well recognized in the United States yet but is gaining greater recognition by some in the UK.

I was misdiagnosed as bipolar type I when I was younger. I'm 100% ADHD. I was dumped on a million different meds that did jack s@#*. Seroquel is especially dangerous, my neurological system will never be normal again. I'm planning on suing the docs who misdiagnosed me. Wish I had seen these 2 instead of them. Some people are one, or the other, or both. I'm ADHD. Each person should be assessed individually

I love this tag team variation. I also love how thorough this webinar is. THE BEST one I've seen so far. My only qualm is that everyone jumps into the RX prescribed, no one looks holistically at the bigger picture of the thyroid, gut-brain axis, and vitamin deficiencies/diet before calculating dose or brand. I only bring it up because of my age, being late diagnose ADHD/Au and realizing i had thyroid problems early 20s, gut issues as a kid, wrongly diagnosed with OCD in teens and my thyroid was Hashimotos for 17 years and now I'm in Hyperthyroidism. thyroid controls most of this. So, I'm curious why most of these webinars never address it?

The older gentleman I think is Dr. Brown. I have heard him on several occasions and he is wonderful! Such a smart man who can explain things that are easy to understand.😊😊😊😊😊

Great resource. However they don’t make a huge difference between BP2 vs ADHD.

I had a TBI and after the TBI, that rapid onset bad mood that was not my normal, became my new normal. To the point where my wife is wanting to leave and says I’m just angry all the time. I hope I can find someone at Kaiser that can actually help me out as I’ve not had good responses to ANY behavioral health medications.

Kaiser is particularly bad for this. I personally filed a complaint against my doctor with the state medical board because he said his only training in ADHD was in medical residency over a decade ago, before the current DSM was published, yet he felt he could rule out ADHD, and without addressing any DSM criteria. I have ADHD-PI and was in a severe crash that had induced comas and TBI. No psychiatrist should go a decade without continuing medical education on this common disorder and people need to let it be known that Kaiser is a problem. They are hiring people without training and people who aren't doctors seem to be telling them what decisions to make.

@@publius9350 thanks. Yea, kaiser is terrible. I went on a big pharma roller coaster of all sorts of mood stabilizers and ssri’s…it was bad. Kaisers behavioral health should be abolished, they only care about you if you want to remove your genitalia. If I had the money to sue them I would. What they’re doing is dangerous.

I’d really like to speak with the man whose describing this info in this video. I’m in my 60’s & have in a sense really hoped that I’d get the authentic type of correct treatment/help that I really personally need period. Don’t wanna drown in this info. I’ve apparently still have ADHD to this day & would truly like to know for a certainty & if its been blown out of proportion then I’d prefer to get this diagnosis deleted. Also was told I’ve got Bipolar 1, but I question this too, I’d need proof that it’s really there. Now I’m told I’ve been watched by a church member (quietly) & she’s witnessed in my moods that I’m showing emotional dysregulation! Good Lord! 🤔🙄😞😢I’ve cried many a tear alright! Can’t seem to cease this 😢what’s going on with me here, unless it’s to do with my memories from my past experiences. Ugh 😑. FRUSTRATED

Does Borderline Personality Disorder fit into this as well?

Yes this is a topic I've never found any decent information on even though it is very common to have ADHD with a comorbid personality disorder. Would be great if additude could make some videos on that.

Great content! Thank you. I was not able to get the link to download the slides to work. Also, notably missing from most ADHD discussions is 1.) tricks for increasing medication compliance in a population that is notorious for flightiness and incomplete tasks (also, compliance metrics for providers) 2.) limited access for populations of color and veterans, and 3.) how to cope with a spouse who is ADHD when you are not. :-)

Nurse practitioners, even when they have earned a terminal degree, often meet pushback when they use the title “doctor.” A nurse practitioner was recently sued in California for using the title. I know, it isn’t fair.

'Doctor' in psychiatry, fully schooled (in the USA totally up to 12-13 years, whereof the last four years in a residency program. After that you can take additional fellowship programs, like Addiction psychiatry or Neuropsychology. Upon that you need a MD (Doctor of Medicine) or OD (Doctor of Osteopathic) from Medical school, a Medical license and a Certificate required if you want to work as psychiatrist. That's a lot. I can certainly agree with that a Nurse Practitioner should have a better title than the ungainly Nurse Practitioner, and "Nurse" isn't right, or boring NP. Not "Doctor", but something that shows how much studies and competence they have. Depending on which way they take before acceptance to the Nurse Practitioner courses, 3-4 years if I got it right, and the Nurse Practitioner courses, around two years and another for additional courses. And a series of tests to be authorized. Up to SEVEN years. That's what it takes to become a general practitioner ("doctor") in many countries. Anyway, who isn't a fully schooled and trained physician or psychiatrist can't title themselves as Doctor. Doctor Brown has an additional PhD, Philosophy Doctor, for published research, if I remember correctly. (In Sweden the title confusion is practically eliminated. A physician, surgeon, psychiatrist or dentist are "läkare", which translates to "healer"😳, but means more "someone who makes health" (grammatically incorrect 😆, the meaning is clear, I hope). Or we use the specialist title, orthopedist, psychiatrist, gynecologist etc. But "tandläkare" - tooth läkare, barnläkare - children läkare (yes, 'barn' means child/children 😄) Colloquial 'doctor' (doktor) can be used, like people did 40-50 and more years ago. Otherwise 'Doktor' is an academic title. )
