Thank you so much for this video. I spent years as a child trying to get a Dx, got a bipolar Dx when I was about 20. At 48 decided to get re-assessed for several reasons. My new psychiatrist told me she is absolutely sure I have ADHD and not bipolar. My last psychiatrist before I moved had also questioned the Dx, so it wasn’t wholly shocking, but this really solidified the difference and looking back and talking to my parents it’s incredibly clear that the new psychiatrist is right. Yes, I was ‘moody’ but always knew why I was upset, rarely felt remorse because I felt it was justified (and some of it was because I was expected to behave in a way that my brain does not want to, without help or meds, because of a lack of Dx). I was always ‘me’ just frustrated, bored, and sad at why things were so hard. Again, thank you. This really helped confirm the change in Dx is correct.

I was diagnosed with ADHD, depression and anxiety so I was put on stimulants and SSRI's at the same time which triggered my first and last manic episode, thanks doc for explaining that SSRI's and stimulants can make it worse or in my case trigger the episode that gave me my diagnosis. This doctor knows what he's talking about. I haven't been on mood stabalisors for about a year as they were making me gain a lot of weight but also haven't taken any SSRI's stimulants and sleep decently.

This is by far one of the most neglected topics amongst both communities, ADHD and Bipolar. As seen, many symptoms are exactly the same , "form and shape " making it hard for both the patient and doctor to identify. Great content!

This is a fantastic overview. Ive been trying to understand the nuances between bipolar and ADHD and much of the internet content or information I found was lacking granularity. Dr Olivardio has done a really good job giving a comprehensive overview of the differences as well as a sense of the internal experience which is so important to understanding the difference between these two disorders as a patient. Seriously, this is the kind of mental health education we need more of. It is very hard to tease apart what might be hypomania vs what is hyperactivity, especially when in these states. This answers my questions much better as to how to see the difference

Thanks for this! There needs to be more info on this comorbidity! Especially the more subtle bipolar spectrum disorders. I was treated for ADHD before bipolar and it caused a lot of problems!!!

I'm not sure if I want to even treat my mania because it's when I'm the most productive. Literally can't sleep, can't eat, can't do anything but focus on the task. When you talked about the need to continue to talk while manic you hit the nail on the head. I realize I'm doing it and I can't stop. I'm not a hyperactive person at all.

Amazing! Thank you so much for this! I was first diagnosed with ADHD after what now I know to be a depressive episode. Had a hypomania episode with Concerta and went off it. Had a major depressive episode at the end of last year and was just diagnosed been in the bipolar spectrum. I was not expecting that, but sure makes a lot of sense. It’s hard to receive a diagnosis like this, I’m not going to lie, but it is helpful to get informed. I’m on Lithium now, hope it helps!

Good luck!! I have the opposite side of this, now seeing why my diagnosis of bipolar 26 years ago was wrong. Recently reassessed off all meds and told I clearly have ADHD not bipolar, and this made why the psychiatrist said that extremely clear. I absolutely fit the ADHD description here and not the bipolar at all. It’s life changing to get the right Dx and know why we are who we are!

You totally forgot autism. Autism and adhd together looks a lot like bipolar. If you think someone might be psychotic if you don't understand their logic, you should always consider autism. Depression might make audhd to be "more autistic" and adhd might not show.

@@kaliplaya86 It should be mentioned and considered every time talking about bipolar, since it's important to make the distinction between them. Too many autistics have been misdiagnosed as bipolar because of healthcare providers not knowing how to do diagnoses between the two.

Perhaps for many, but I've learned how to hack mine. I didn't actually know about my diagnosis until recently. I figured out how to use me being hyper-aware due to C-PTSD to always know where things were which helped my issues with losing things when it comes to ADHD. If I'm feeling very emotional due to bipolar depression, I'm able to distract myself by hyper fixating on something thanks to my ADHD. I had always thought that my issues with time were just how I was so I learned to set timers in 5 minute increments for tasks at work, made sure to write my schedule down and keep it on me. There are other examples, but it is possible. The only medication I take is lamotrigine.
