I am from Victoria in Australia, though I was born in England and came out here about 55 years ago. Anyway, back in 2014 we went over to England for a six week holiday, and for one of those weeks, we hired a narrow boat on the Avon-Kennet canal and had an absolutely wonderful time. Motoring peacefully through the countryside, stopping at pubs for lunch, explorin the towns and their churches. One of these days I might do it again - though I hear there is a similar facility on the canals in France and that might be even more delightful.

Ahoy! I live in Idaho USA but fantasize about the narrow boat life vicariously through the blogs you and others produce! Looks like a dreamy way to explore the UK. I’m fascinated with the old mechanicals old engines, gates and lifts you encounter. Time has happily passed them by, Smooth sailing mate!

I am from Mossel Bay, South Africa and I emigrated here from the UK 3 years ago, and the plan now is to sell-up, return to the UK, have a 57-foot narrowboat built, and spend the rest of my days sailing the cut and drinking G&T's . . . . LOL . . . . not at the same time lol :-)

Hi there. I found your channel through Dans wonderful channel. I have no questions. I am British, grew up in Devon but moved to British Columbia, Canada in 1999. Left there last year and now live in Austria, very close to Vienna and right on the Danube. Who knows, one day I might return to the UK to live but it is lovely to be back this side of the pond and experience once again beautiful buildings and European history.

We always had a wood burning stove in our house so I learned how to light them early on. It’s really simple, all you need is some scrunched up newspaper. 4-5 balls of scrunched up paper with twigs on top, light the paper and you’re good to go!

Hi - we have a 52 foot narrow boat in Stourport on the Staffs and Worcester canal- nice comments the diesel heaters can be a bit noisy as after 6pm in some areas you cannot run the engines ,we have the Alde gas boiler -it is slow to heat but good when its been on a couple of hours for hot water and radiator heating -we also have a multi fuel stove -it is only a weekend boat for us

Hi Jasmin! It´s ages since you asked but still: My name is Ingemar Johnsson and I live in Gothenburg, Sweden, a country with some canals too but they are bigger than the English/Welsh ones, I must be put in that group of Gongoozlers you talk about in the last film as I don´t own a boat but love to hear and see stories of the life on the cut. I started by following David (Cruising the Cut) and then I went to Emma (Narrowboat Girl) and now last I have been following Lorna (Lorna Jane Adventures) all from the start until today. Now I plan to do the same with you, I´ll buy a big bottle of tomato sauce and try to Catch up (or Ketchup) then, I love word games.

From Australia that using heat from the engine sounds real eco friendly I am from a place in Australia called Goulburn I don't like the cold very much I like it hot as long as it's not humid and muggy and sticky and sweaty otherwise I like it about 35-38c warm that's good glad you are able to have heating I think he'll is not hot it's cold don't like rugging up much like wearing t shirts and shorts hot water from the engine for baths sounds great spot on hope you keep warm long boating sounds a lot of fun like camping but you get to be indoors have fun cecil
@ThisNarrowboatAdventure
@ThisNarrowboatAdventure 7 жыл бұрын
cecil tagg to be honest we rearly use the radiators , the diesel heater is from a small separate engine not the boats engine. we only use it really for hot water about two times a week for an hour. and there is no bath! haha it would take probly a hole day to get a hot bath and then you would have to fill you water take , that's why we don't have a bath! mostly use the fire!

Now Living in North Carolina, but from Chicago, Illinois, usa. In Illinois, we have the Illinois/Michigan canal, but it's just used for local canoeing, kayaking, fishing, small things like that. They used pontoons or flat rafts on it back in the 1800's to transport product from Chicago to the Mississippi River and thus down to Louisiana and the gulf. Abraham Lincoln, the 16th president here made 2 trips like that in his youth Observing the abuses of slavery made him start reevaluating his original beliefs. So much history on canals!

LMAO, "How can anyone start a fire by accident? I can't start one on purpose." Central Valley of California here. It's always warm here :) Bad summers we'll have months where the low is 70F (21C). It's awful but keeps the heating bill low. Oddly my house has two fireplaces and no swimming pool.

A tip for easy starting the solid fuel stove. Go to a local hardware store and buy a Bernzamatic torch it uses screw on gas bottles Hand held the Bernzamatic nozzle assembly has an igniter built in and a gas valve to turn the gas on or off. After you screw the nozzle assembly on do not remove it from the bottle until it is empty as they sometimes leak after unscrewing the nozzle from the bottle. They are perfectly safe attached to the bottle with the valve closed. To use you simply open the valve about two turns is normally enough the pull the trigger and hold it in, if you let go of the trigger it immediately shuts off the gas and the goes out. Load the stove with kindling in a crossways pattern that will support bigger fuel above it ie: coal! The torch puts out a nice blue flame around 1200 degrees Farenheight this will get your fire going easily with no more than 30-45 seconds worth of flames pointed at the bottom of your stack of kindling make sure the dampener is open full for maximum draft. Buy two bottles of gas when one bottle runs out simply unscrew it and screw on your spare then buy another next time your near the store that sells the the bottle are not refillable just throw em in the trash or a metal recycling bin and don't let them say you need " map gas" which burns much hotter. You only need mapgas if you welding or a metal worker. After the fire is lit let go of the trigger and then shut of the gas by rotating the valve clockwise till it stops and don't use magical gorilla tactics on the valve either just snuck is all you need. Now just think build you fire and no matches just a very easy to use Bernzamatic torch. The name Bernzamatic is the common name of the gas torch here in the states. You will love it. Jim Derry, New Hampshire USA

Danish Westcoast. We do have some floating houses on the Fjord around here, but I think they would be statically not suitable to move around. And the North Sea is a bit too rough for boats with not so big engines and flat bottoms I guess. I like the idea of living mobile but take your home with you. Suits my “nomad gene”. Jasmine, I thoroughly enjoyed your video. I must add that the question asked of you is quite a good one as you have provided several informative answers. It is amazing to know about all the options available for heating a narrowboat! Living on a narrowboat sounds like quite a trip eh? Have you investigated navigating those "Bateaux" in France at all? I believe those are somewhat wider no? I am originally from Argentina, living in Southwest Florida, USA. I would love to take one of those big Grain or Coal shipping barges in use on these rivers like the Mississippi, fix it up and cruise up and down our inter coastal Waterway or on one of the main rivers... Always chasing the summer!! Very best regards and keep on posting your Vlogs.😎🌴🍷🍸🍷 Robert F.

oh cool! sounds like an interesting life you both have, certainly better than some dreary office life. I used to do some acting myself at the Oldham theatre workshop near where I live. I don't think anyone would have paid to see my acting though haha

From and am are different answers. Currently am living in a little antebellum river landing town in farming country along a US midwestern river. Boats don't land here any more, haven't for decades. But there are still occasional towboats and barges to a sand dredging operation just across the river from downtown. And only 1 of 2 railroads through town is still in business.

As for me, my health is a mess and I'm not working. Town has a few small industries, a prison, lots of surrounding farms. Town center is about a mile north of a major interstate highway, so there are 2 truck stops and several hotels out at the highway. And we're about 30 to 40 minutes from a small city of just over 100,000 population which has 3 different colleges in it. Population of our town is just over 8,000. As my health allows I do participate in our little model train club which puts on open houses once a month and for events downtown. Our club is currently in the basement of the city council chambers building, which used to be City Hall, which used to be the Post Office. At some point in past that basement was the Police Station; still has 4 jail cells, and the see how tall the suspects are, wall.

Thanks! Here at 8:40 am on a Sunday morning. :) We have fun here in town, both as a town and in our model train club. About two miles south of my home is a friend who is a psychologist and a paint horse breeder; a few years ago they opened a therapeutic riding center. I volunteered for a time but my own health said that was too much to do. Still fun to go visit. One nearby place I have not visited, about 8 miles away in a super tiny town is farm where Budweiser breeds and raises some of its Clydesdale horses; they do give tours from time to time.

Oh, and we're also not overly far from a little historic burg where some of Daniel Boone's family had a salt operation. That town also has a very nice community theater. The kind that although it is tiny, bus tours go to it.

what kind of boat ? sea boats?
@jean405
@jean405 7 жыл бұрын
well, they are canal boats, just wide beams, they don't put out to sea, but can hug the coast, they have side thrusters for when the sea gets choppy. There are sailboats, and speed boats on the canals too www.getyourguide.dk/kbenhavn-l12/48-timers-bus-og-baad-hop-paa-hop-af-i-kbenhavn-t21339/

I'm in a flat and I can't afford to keep heating on all day I'd love to keep it at 20 degrees which is supposed to be comfortable and 16 for bed but have to use boiler as little as neccessary due to finances I'd do a comparison between a small gas oil diesel petrol fed boiler vs a multifuel stove with back boiler and pump etc vs a fully electric immersion tank pump radiator system see which works best as well as cheapest

What about, Solar heating. Save $$ on all fuels. I don't know whats available in the UK. Solar in the long run, will save you all that extra $$ for future fixing or what ever. We use solar in our RV here in California. They have solar for yachts, small boats / live a boards. Maybe check out going that way.

hi I have never heard of solar heating but from what I have just looked up i don't think it would be possible to use in the uk in winter.
