I get asked this question a lot. Is it easier to tame a baby guinea pig than an adult. I don't think so, here's why! www.scottysanimals.com/ Many of the links above are affiliate links. Baby piggies are sooo skittish. They are scared of every noise and then even more scared at the sound they make when they run and hide. 😁I wish my piggies weren’t so scared but I try to cuddle them a bit at a time and build up.

I was only about 3 weeks old when I came to live with Shark, but right from the beginning whenever she's going to pick me up she says "Petunia, visit!" and I know I am going to get picked up. That way I am never scared. Even if I try to avoid her, she will catch me, but usually I just come over to "visit". She says "Petunia, time to go home!" when she is going to put me down. That way I know what is going to happen. She thinks it is important that I not get startled. I am glad she feels that way. I know a few other phrases, too, like "Petunia, get in your carry bag,". But truth is, most of the time, sitting on Shark is my favorite thing to do. That, and, of course, popcorning.

Hey Scotty, I just want to say thank you so much for your videos. I was raised on a hobby farm and love animals so much. Since I moved to the "big city", I have missed so much having pets. I adopted a baby guinea pig and now getting an adult for him, and it has been so rewarding being around the little guy and taking care of him and watching him thrive. I never realized how underrated and precious guinea pigs are, and how much personality and joy they can bring. Anyway, you have a soothing and calm deameanor of explaining things and its been so helpful watching your videos. Thanks so much for all the info :)

Babies take longer but they will become way more tame then a adult..but adults already have their personalities set and if they are not alone will be easier to set to your schedule and not be as hard to tame then younger pigs..I love them all 🥰

Kindergarten, yes that's a perfect analogy. I adopted a trio of girls, an entire little as very young pups as their mother was poorly. They're now adults and although pups are adorable adults are intelligent, interactive, avidly look for us...they develop their personalities over time. Having a guinea pig from weeks is nothing to the years of pleasure and companionship an adult guinea pig gives. I once read that guinea pigs are as intelligent as dogs but dogs can learn as pups whereas guinea pigs learn as adults and in my opinion that's true. We should all be in it for as much of their lifetime as we're blessed with ❤

I got my little girl Peachies when she was around 4 or 5 weeks old I have her for 4 to 5 months now and she is just starting to let me hold her ,she still runs and hides a lot ,I just give her ,her space and work with her on her terms . It does take time and patience. If you don't have the time or the patience maybe a Guinea pig is not right for you. I am now in the process of adopting 4 more piggies, 3 girls and 1 boy. Because thanks to your videos I found out that instead of 2 girls I have 1 each. ( don't trust pet stores). I have separated them and have the girl on pregnancy watch. But they need companion. Thank you Scotty for all your great videos.

hi Scotty, I'm Jess from South Carolina. i have tried my best to find a guinea pig rescue near me. but all i can find is Pet Smart and other pet stores. I have a 9 month old guinea pig named Oreo and a 5 month old named Pepe Le Pew (Pepe for short). Oreo was given to me by my niece in law she had gotten him for a pet store with his brother. they fought a lot so she took the brother back to the store and gave Oreo to me. he was alone for a while. but now he and Pepe are the best of friends. i just wanted to say think you to you and Saskia for all the advice. with out your videos i would not know how to take good care of him and now his best buddy. forever thankful Jess.

I have two brothers. I got them when they were 2 months old. They were the most skittish pigs I’ve ever seen. Now they are 7 month old. They improved a lot but they’re definitely not tamed. They hide if they hear me move (and they don’t see), yet they wheek at me when they see me coming. They have some great moments when they let me give them a tiny pet in their habitat and they have bad days as well. I don’t take them out of their “cage” if it’s not necesary and I think they appreciate it. I got my first guinea pig as an adult. She was unbelievably tame. I aggree that babies are harder to teach and tame because of their constant fear.

I have had 5 guinea pigs bought from Pets at Home store and currently still two of them. All bought when that were of age to leave their mother. I rescued two boys (unfortunately one passed away) from a Gumtree ad. I also rescued two girls from Support Adoption for Pets. I believe that it doesn't matter what age piggies are, give them time to settle in, spend time with them and love them. I've had two nervous rescue pigs and two nervous store bought pigs. Give them time, love them and spend time with them, is my advice regardless of age.

I agree, it depends on the piggies. Our first one was over one year old when we got her and she is the tamest of them all. It took maybe a week. Of course she doesn't like being picked up, but she settles in my lap and will let me pet her while she is in the cage. The second one, she was 3 months old and she is still very skittish. She will run most of the time, and is very cautious when approaching us to get snacks. It needs to be something irresistible or she won't leave her hidey. The baby, she is one month old and she is sooooo bold! She is the one always screaming for food and she is already starting to approach us for snacks, even taking it out of our hands (we thought it would take a lot longer based on our second one). She definitely is more comfortable than the second one, but not as comfortable as the oldest.

It took me about a year to gain trust from my older two boars, one is still jumpy now and then, I'm not sure why but it's just his character I think. He likes cuddles and attention but only when he wants it which is fair enough, my other older boar is the total opposite, he is extremely affectionate and always loves being picked up and being cuddled. As for my younger two (I got them as babies in December) one is of course very skittish and hides away but is slowly getting his confidence and putting his trust in me. The other totally shocked me, as with all new pets, I let them settle in their home for a couple of days before I start trying to encourage them to me with food, trying to pet them, etc. But one of the youngest came straight up to the bars to me on the morning after I brought them home and he stayed there whilst I came over to see him and gently stoked his paw through the bars, he didn't freeze or run away, he wanted attention. He has kept this up the whole time, I heard his wheek for the first time in those first couple of days whilst his companion was still hiding away. He is such a confident piggy and even when his companion is startled by a noise, he stays and watches what is going on. He's the smallest of my piggies but definitely the bravest, he's not scared of anything. 😂

Personality is a big factor. The guinea pig I have had since she was old enough to live without her mom was about a year to get to the point of her being tame. She looked like a robot when I handfed her, and now she is standing on the other guinea pigs for food. My youngest guinea pig was tame within a week, and always seems close to jump out of the cage, when I bring food xD

After watching this video i feel a whole lot better about my situation! I adopted two boys from a rescue about 6 weeks ago. They were only a month old. I was told by the lady at the rescue to handle them every day no matter what to tame them. It’s been quite a challenge and I’ve been discouraged watching your videos and trying to figure out if I’m doing the right things! I appreciate the advice about picking them up in their hidies so I’m not chasing them around the cage it was obvious that was stressing them out but at the same time I knew it was important to handle them daily! But now realizing they are extra skittish because they are young is helpful. They will come and take food from my hand most of the time. Still not sure how much i should be handling/bothering them when it seems like they want to be left alone..... Also im confused by sounds that seem to me are happy noises but when i watch videos im told its most likely irritation!

@@btesenair its been over a year now! I have an update, I don’t know if you’re going to like it! I have come to the conclusion that my guinea pigs just don’t particularly enjoy being handled. However, they do not run from me and don’t hide, they are relaxed and not stressed. I still pick them up to give them their floor time and clean their cage. I do use a hidie and they are used to it, not too hard to get them to get in and out of it to move them around. They are in the room we hang out in most and love to interact with us all day long, wheeking, running around, taking food and getting little pets on the head. But they still run like hell if I try to pick them up from their cage lol. So I just don’t handle them much and they are perfectly happy.

I love this so much I remember my first Guinea pig Chewie and she wasn't so active usually lonely it wasnt til I got her another piglet sweet potato and they loved eachother keep eachother in company. Sadly chewie passed away and I got sweet potato another mate and soon after they had a family. Much later I found adoption center and got 2 more. And they all ended up mixing. At the time I didnt ask many questions or read a lot and I had many experiences and research to better their babies. And future pigs. I finally had the money to build a DYI this was many years ago. Trail and error I wouldn't recommend anyone I would recommend to go with an experienced guinea pig like shelter or angelic youtuber like scotty and saskia. I wish I knew about the two 20yrs ago. I only keep in touch with one person that took the piggies away that I give to. She still has the same piggies but their like the great great great great 10x grandchildren of sweet potato. At least 4 of them. The only person that can relate to a guinea pig is my wife. And good God whenever I travel and she by herself she has anxiety and need company and the dogs aren't enough I make long distances call to keep my piggie on check. And give her a schedule to follow task til I get back home she pop corn hops because she got company back which is I. Now we grew a garden in our yard aka guinea pig food!

The problem with baby piggies, especially boy piggies as they hit their 'teenage stage' they can fight with each other. Girls are less likely to fight during that stage. I had 2 boys together and 1 tore a hole in the back leg in the other boy. Now both boys are in different pairs and much happier. I find the breed of the piggy has something to do with how easy/difficult they are to tame.

I've had some really tame piggies over the years, most notably my Batman, who was a teddy with charisma. He loved exploring the living room during floor time, and once when I was exercising while he was out, he did squats with me! (This was during the brief period he was an only -pig, which I ended as quickly as I could.) I currently have four girls in my 3x5 c&c, and they are all different. Sgt Pepper is about 4 now, and has mellowed -- when I first brought her and her sister Aby home 3 years ago, she was convinced that she was going to die any time I touched her. Now she lets me let her in the cage. A couple of months ago, Aby died suddenly, and I found Lion, Thunder, and Lightning. They had belonged to a family with kids, but one of the children had developed an allergy. They were all very skittish. Every day I put my hand in the cage and ask who wants to smell my hand. Lion is very brave and comes over to check me out every time, as does Pepper. Lightning will come to within a centimetre of my hand and then race away, and Thunder is still in the "how far away do I need to run to be safe" stage, though she has come to within an inch of my hand and last night took a bit of lettuce from my hand. We'll get there, I'm sure. Just have to stick with it.
