Yep, exactly! A good pedigree doesn't give you any guarantee, but it gives you a much better idea of what you're going to get.

There's always been thoroughbred in the QH breed. Three Bars was a TB and a foundation sire. But imo AQHA is allowing too much TB in. The QH/TB cross is called and appendix QH and the papers are a different color. If that horse is bred it has to be to a non appendix horse. But here's the kicker: that horses sire could've been appendix so you're getting lots of close generation TB. What pains me about the breed now is all of the specialty stuff. The English types are over 16 hands, halter horses don't stay sound to ride with 000 feet and I could go on. The breed has lost much of what made it great: the versatility. Bitd (I'm 56) you could do halter, pleasure, rope and run barrels off the same horse and do well. Btw your horse would top out at 14.2 or smaller but be a tank. The hottest thing going now is ranch horse versatility so that should show AQHA that we want to go back to that type horse.

Great topic for a video. Not many people get into the bloodline conversation on youtube. I couldn’t agree more with you on bloodline. Many times I have heard people say papers aren’t important with dogs and horses. I understand someone not registering a gelding that they intend to keep. However it is important to know what you are getting if you are the buyer.

A lot of the quarter horse owners have gotten wise to what you’re discussing. They formed foundation quarter horse associations, that means they had to be traceable back to some of the initially registered quarter horses before it became fashionable to introduce thoroughbred blood into the mix. It’s supposed to be about saving some of the traits that made the quarter horse the go to horse for ranch work etc... personally, we have all foundation bred horses, and I can see the benefit to this line of thinking.

I agree with not bothering doing the paper work on a Horse that they say is a purebred. How can you ever really know 💭 You explaining how to look for certain traits and personality, is the best way . Like you said , People have behavior personalities usually like one or both of their parents . I was never raised by my own dad . He went to Heaven when I was 2. But I have been told , I am just like him . The wonder of God’s Hand in our lives , is so amazing to me . What my Dad wasn’t able to do , God found a way through me , And you are right , that breeding a German Shepherd to a Golden Retriever, cannot be sold as a German Shepherd. Laura 💜 Bear 🐴💜

Very interesting discussion. I've always been interested in horses, but other than a couple of Shetland ponies I had as a kid, I've never owned any. I've not had the time or resources to do so. I did help a friend show his Leopard Appaloosa at the Houston Livestock Show a couple of times. All I recall of the bloodlines was one gelding he had was a grandson of Joker B and his filly was from a horse called Cherries Jubilee I think. What I recall most is that my friend really shouldn't have been allowed to have horses at all. He didn't have the patience with them that was needed and did a lot more harm than good. I guess I had a decent eye for horses because one year we were watching the Appaloosa auction and my friend asked me to pick the one I'd buy, hypothetically of course. I picked a yearling stud that was a really flashy black with a white blanket, high head and lots of spring in his step. He sold for $5000. That was 1978 and a pretty good price for a yearling. I've often wondered what happened to that Colt. He sure was handsome. Thanks for your channel. I really enjoy it.

That's interesting--makes me curious about the Thoroughbred registry. I worked at Ruidoso Downs and Remington Park for a couple of seasons to get some varied experience with lots of different horses. The trainer I worked for that trained Thoroughbreds got some 2 yr. olds in to condition, and one of them I swear was a mis-labeled draft horse. We nicknamed him Little Huey, LOL, he was enormous--nearly 17 hands already, huge neck and hooves the size of dinner plates. He was such a handful it sometimes took three of us to bathe him. He wasn't mean, he was just full of himself, a big old galoot. We worked hard to get his groundwork done, get him started under saddle and get some manners on him--I loved him, but it was terrible hard to get his weight down to racing trim. I really think Huey (don't remember his registered name) had some strong draft blood in him. Good video, Dwayne, thank you!

Interesting you brought up Justin Morgan. When I was a kid, my Dad bought this flashy little horse at the auction (he knew the former owner) and brought him home. He was just a joy to look at. Dad went and dug out this book he had on horse breeds, and we went and compared this horse to the book--he was definitely Morgan or Morgan-bred. Deep, deep blood red line-back bay with faint golden dapples across his hips, high tail-set. A little extra at the poll, and a shapely head with big soft eye. Could be a bit spicy, LOL, but if he got exited--he'd flag that tail like an Arab and boy the leg action on that boy, naturally gaited! Such a breath-taking sight. Really miss that horse.

I've always been a papered Quarters Horse guy Dewayne, very interesting info, but I've been out of it for awhile and didn't know this happened over the years with that rule change you mentioned about Thoroughbreds being introduced. What's your thoughts on the Appaloosa Breed? I had nice Appaloosa Mare once, I'd to train her myself for what wanted in a horse, liked her because she was very smart, and easily trained with a little bit of work, called her one of my best creations yet, I bred her to a Quarter Horse, raised that foal and then sold them both. She was only 7-1/2 years old when I sold her to a young lady, and sold the foal a colt too another lady, they both tell me from time to time how great both horses are. Couldn't get the mare papered because the father died, but looking at her blood lines for Appaloosa's she had some pretty good blood in her. I did all the above for a challenge so I could put that down as part of my achievements with horses. Thanks for another great and informative video.

I remember when all the apps looked like apps: broom tails, great big feet, big heads and they all had color and that fantastic shuffle gait. Sadly those things have been mostly bred out of them, but some smaller breeders are once again breeding for those qualities. I used to say for toughness and longevity, if I couldn't have a mule I'd have an appy.

Thanks for informative video. As always lots of wisdom there. Since you recently acquired some new horses and a mule for your stable/school what are some of the mannerisms you look for in a horse after learning his blood line. I'm curious about herd dynamics in selecting a horse. Is the most dominant horse in the herd the one to look closely about? Is the more timid bottom of the hierarchy one to think about? Does this even come into play when you assess your new horse? Thanks in advance.

I'd be curious to know also, is there a bloodline or personality trait that would be a "hard stop" or definite "no". Just curious. My cousin breeds Polish Arabians (straight Cabbett), and her best friend had a gorgeous Egyptian stud--just drop-dead gorgeous. Damned Egyptian stud would have colic every other month, nearly died several times while I lived down there, and every single foal of his had the same problem. By the time I met her, he had no living progeny, they had all died of colic. My cousin's studs produced fine offspring with no health issues. I don't know if there's any such thing as "hereditary colic" but if there is, that Egyptian stud had it, LOL.

I would love to hear what blood lines you have found that works for you as a good reliable trail riding horse for a beginner / novice adult. Back in the 90's, I found myself teaching riding lessons to beginners and finding their 1st horse. I kept a folder of keepers and No No's registration papers, wondering if their would be any consistent pattern to the blood lines. Ironically, Jet Deck and Top Moon. Showed up quite a bit. As keepers. And Skipper W. But Hancock,McCue or any of the Doc O Lena's or halter bloodlines, Two Eyed Jack, were either too smart or too tough or could buck. But this was before AQHA went extreme with too much Thoroughbred. And before before the internet. I shopped the Sunday Newspaper want Ads. I was pretty limited to a small area not much to choose from.

Probably the most successful bloodline I have found for a good reliable trail horse for a beginner or novice has been Zippo Pine Bar. I’ve also had some very good Leo bred horses. I really like the Leo bloodline, especially if the mare goes back to Leo. I have found that any of the iterations of Doc Bar can be iffy for the novice. It’s not always true but often they are kind a hot, which is not unfounded seeing that they were bred to be athletes.

What you say regarding the quarter horse/thoroughbred cross breeding is correct in a manner of speaking. If one studies quarter horse breeding, they would find that all quarter horses have thoroughbred blood. Even all foundation quarter horses have thoroughbred ancestry. I would agree that if you are just starting this equine journey, the farther you can get from an appendix QH, the better. A few generations down the line might suit you better.
@petrairene
@petrairene 2 жыл бұрын
You also have to take into account that 100 years ago, when horses were bred to work the types of thoroughbred that were selected to be used on QH/ranch mares were quite different than what is used today to breed a QH/TB cross show horse for the hunter under saddle show ring. I'm fairly certain that even among purebred TBs you find individuals that make really good ranch and using horses.

@@petrairene I just commented earlier on the Thoroughbred thing. Worked at Remington Park years ago, one of the 2 yr. old we got in was enormous--already almost 17 hands and huge feet, great big neck on him. LOL, we nicknamed him "Little Huey". I swear that horse was a mis-labeled draft horse. Not sure they ever made a good race horse out of him, don't think he tracked well, he'd probably do much better as a saddle trail horse or under harness. He was a hand-full, not mean but just full of himself and a little goofy. Loved that big old galoot.

Did you know that the Camargue horse is the most antique one in Europe and the line goes throught the mare. Kinda along this topic are the people that just ride on weekends that buy ranch horses. Then they're surprised when their horse is broncy because they paid out the nose for a broke ranch horse. Ranch horses are worked 6-7 days a week and most are turned out. They don't stand up getting tons of feed and ridden on weekends. As Duane said, Hancock horses are famous for being broncy if they don't get worked 4-5 days a week.

My background in breeding Rottweilers for the AKC show ring has given me a fair knowledge of breed conformation and temperament, same as horses. They were severe with my brothers but they were severe with me because I took that squirrel youngest child to extreme that's why they left everything to me my brothers and sisters are so stupid I would do things but I never got caught that's the sign of a stupid child no I've inherited all of this crap but I do have a soft spot for animals and and I wouldn't want to put them somewhere where they were going to be mistreated after living this last time I rather just keep them.

Very interesting! Guard dogs like Cane Corsos! It's all in their bloodline! These dogs are born to protect! You better know exactly what you're doing with these dogs! 700 psi bite its more than a lion! In my opinion these are the perfect guardian dogs in the world! Very easy to train ! Wake up America
