My grandpa in ww2 told me one of his war stories. He had a buddy that was looking thru Binoculars over a wall scouting was shot along the top his fingers it ripped 3 fingers off. Pinky ring, middle. The bullet deflected just enough up to bounce to the upper left of his helmet by the temple saveing him from a headshot. Sadly he passed away in 2013. I wish he could retell all his stories. They were amazing to listen to. And some tragic things happened. I don’t really recall the soldiers name it happened to but I’m aware he had survived and was sent home safely after that incident.

So doing a bit of maths: if a bullet (let's say a .45 ACP which is pretty accurate) flies at 250m/s and hits the hand from the side means that it is traveling 10cm (the approximate width of the hand) in 0.0004s, while the hand is moving at 25m/s, which is reasonable. In that time, while the bullet is in your hand, you can lower the trajectory of 1cm and bring 25m/s vertical velocity to the bullet, which means that if you have your hand at 30cm from your face you can all in all deflect the bullet of about 4cm (1 inch 9/16").

But I have seen a show from Chicago there was a gangster that have been shot in there hand with a .380 and it saved there face and head to be shot ! One of the fallen gangsters was hit in his hand in the past where deflected away or just didn't have the momentum to do anything
